That's right, I forgot about the security cookie. BTW that's hilarious about you forgetting your anniversary. You probably should have tried to blame it on the bank or something.
At Bank of America, online banking customers are given a "site key", which consists of an image for them to remember. The first page asks for your account number, the next page will ask for your PIN. The page with the PIN prominently displays your "site key" image. If the image isn't correct, you don't enter your password.
There are some obvious problems with this setup, but it makes it so that phishers must do some work and target you specifically in order to get your PIN.
It really boils down to a basic mistrust by the population of the name "Jeeves"
I couldn't agree with you more. I never really understood the whole butler thing either. A butler is someone who greets you at the door (and maybe gets you your pipe and slippers), but not necessarily someone who can answer any questions you might have. Maybe ask-einstein or ask-poindexter would have made more sense.
It's not that the parts come from China, it's that now the responsibility for keeping spyware type stuff off of the computer is China's. If they bought their computers from a domestic supplier, there would be at least one other entity checking these computers. Since the entire box now comes from China, it is necessary for the intelligence community to do the checking. This makes a lot of sense to me.
I too have several free "LINKSYS" wireless access points in my area. I hope LINKSYS patented the business model of giving away free wireless access to everyone. Google is getting close with this patent.
P/E is not a good indicator for growth stocks. Some people think it is not a good indicator at all. I think the increase in the P/E in the S&P is just a result of more growth stocks (like Google) being added to the S&P. It is not indicative of the next "bubble".
Take Google vs. GM for instance. Google's P/E is 68.09, GM doesn't even have a P/E (no earnings). Which stock would you rather own? Which stock does P/E point to as the better investment? It seems to me P/E isn't very helpful.
Yes, there is a correlation between DRM and shorter battery life. But, since CORRELATION != CAUSATION it is mathematically impossible for DRM to have caused the shorter battery life.
If you don't want internet access then yes, you are a luddite. Either that or just not smart enough to gain access to the benefits of the internet. Most probably, you are both.
In 30 years, the percentage of people with internet access will be about the same as the percentage of people with indoor plumbing (99.999 percent). The old people who are afraid of new technology will die off. Those who don't "want" internet access will find it as necessary as indoor plumbing and will get it.
One thing that made me laugh from TFA:
He's part of the 18% of households that, according to the Parks survey, have a computer but aren't interested in "anything" on the Internet. Though Mitchell oversaw his company's tech strategy a few years ago, he never used e-mail at work.
Gee, I wonder why this guy is no longer in charge of his company's tech strategy??
You are correct, that statement would be misleading. But the phrase "iPod Takes Japan by Storm" suggests that the iPod is crushing the competition in Japan. With a 51% market share I wouldn't call it a "storm", especially in light of it's dominance here in USA.
With that said, I do think the iPod is one of the best products to come out in many many years. One day it may even have 80% market share in Japan!
There is another way to spin the data that iPod has 51% market share in Japan. It has an 82% market share here in the US. This article could just as easily have been titled:
I never said this was a bad thing. I only took issue with the phrase "globally accessible". It almost certainly will not be legally accessible from inside of China. Do you disagree?
With all the out-takes maybe we can make a show called "America's Funniest Moon Videos". It might be funny to watch Neil Armstrong take a shot to the nuts.
This convergence concept is highly reminiscent of Big Brother of 1984 fame
Is anyone else sick of people bringing up the book 1984? Here we are, in 2006, and the society in his book is nothing like today. Orwell's book missed the mark by a country mile. When people cite 1984, it usually indicates unconscious hyperbole. OMG the sky is falling because our fridges are talking to our cell phones!!! Big brother is coming!!!
Cell phone viruses will not be as big an issue as PC viruses. PC viruses generally target Windows, which is on 95% of PCs. Each phone virus would have to target a particular cell phone platform, thus limiting the scope of the attack.
Sony is playing us like fiddles. They are purposely hinting that the PS3 will be delayed/overpriced/etc, to keep us all in anticipation and to keep the PS3 in the "news". I wouldn't be surprised if it actually comes out a little early.

I don't think lines of code is a good measure of anything. You could probably write an entire OS in one line of Perl code.
MacDonalds's was sued by a bunch of vegetarians for "bundling" beef fat in their fries and not telling anyone.
Musicals are the lowest form of art, just below cave drawings and country music.

Their gross profit last quarter was $372,208,000 http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=GOOG .
In 1999 almost all of the internet companies had yet to have their first profitable quarter.

I'm not sure how they would pull it off, but it might be a lucrative industry. They would be a kind of paid informant; a "cyber narc".
There's always next year. We've got W till '08, and a republican congress until this November. Anything is possible.

By "globally" they mean everywhere except China.

it must not be good

This is actually a benefit for companies selling TV's. Now anyone with an "older" HDTV will have to go out and buy a new one. More profit!
