Hmm. I could be wrong about this, but are they not leagally bound to relase the source to their browser? It looks like it is based on Konqueror, which I believe has a GNU license. Why are they even allowed to release it under a freebsd license?
I have heard of others using this program http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html to solve the issue you have. Have not used it myself, so I cannot say how good or bad the utility is
Well it has been almost 6 years since Napster made its way into our lives? 6 Years Really? Lets look around and see what file sharing programs are left after the music and movie biz nuked the crap out of most of them.
1. Emule - This is one of the best we found out there. Hint (Search for server.met on google to update your server list)
2. Bearshare - Nice Gnutella client, lots of good hits
3. Limewire - Another Gnutella client. It even works on the Mac!
4. Shareaza - A beautiful Gnutella client with no spyware.
5. BitTorrent - Perfect for downloading movies, or that latest linux distro
6. KaZaa - Old favorite. Oh yea - Aussie users, you can't download - Yea Right!
7. Azureus - BitTorrent client that works on Mac, Linux, and Windows
8. Morpheus - Wow. They are still around? Wha happened!
9. Gnucleus - Open source Gnutella for you freeloading open source hippies out there - Yea I am talking about you
10. Napster - Ah, just put this one here to see if you are still reading, and I guess for shits and grins too
So there you have it folks. These are slim pickings. Get um while they still work!
Um these stories indicate that *Windows* would be running in this VM. Please show me a Virtual Machine that can run Windows, or Linux so good that you don't even know its there - and is only a few hundred KB.
Yes we all know there are all kinds of virtual machines that could run in a very small amount of space. I think the B.A.S.I.C. VM on my Commodore 64 was quite small - lets see that run Linux, or Windows.
The story keeps coming up that Windows, or Linux could be hoisted up into a virtual machine and antivirus software can never detect it - but has anyone thought of the payload size needed to implement an entire virtual machine? It will be interesting to see what type of software comes out of this research since this is using hardware to detect changes at the bus level - that way the rootkit or virus cannot use its trickery to hide itself.
After reading the article, this line is of interest:
"The law requires each business to install a firewall or change the default SSID, the name that identifies a wireless network, if the personal information stored has not already been encrypted. Penalties would range from a warning on first offense to a $500 fine on third offense."
How would any of this help with the security of a wireless network. I did not see anything regarding the use of encryption - unless I missed it.
I doubt any of the original artists would have a problem with it. It seems that it is family's that are interested in the financial gain from complaining to Google about it. This tiny excerpt from the article explains it all: "In September, the Authors Guild sued Google for reproducing works..."
Come on! The Google symbol in the likeness of an artist is honoring them. It would only help increase the value's of their works, and peoples awareness of them. They just see Google as a big money pit they can take from.
Yes Bandwidth is not free. But when will people learn that forcing people to view the adverts is just going to turn them off and it is generally bad publicity. Yes there is always a portion of the population that will run adblocking software - so what. They are the type of user that would never click on an ad anyway, so why force them to see it!?
What about XDrive. Doesn't anyone remember all of their annoying popup ads during the dot-com boom? I think the company folded around 2001. Their technology is still around I think as WebDrive, but it is used for FTP, or your own website.
Finally -wasn't the GDrive just a hack on top of GMail and not an officially sanctioned product?
I don't think it means much for corporate report developers and business intelligence staff. It is simply a new version of the poor selling Google appliance. If companies were not using it before, then why are these few plugins going to make a difference? Looks like Google PR Blather to me.
I don't know about anyone else here but Symantec products really stink. If they buy a company, their stench seems to overtake it quickly. The last good program to come out of them was in 1993 when they had some great disk utilties for DOS.
Which brings me to my final point. It looks like their accountants are just as good as their software developers.
It makes one wonder also if the Intel/Apple alliance will have any bearing on Microsoft's decision to give them any help. One other thing to note is Microsoft's lackluster support of Intel 64 Bit processors, but their huge support of AMD 64 bit processors.
It is never going to happen. Steve Jobs has one goal - take over the world. He wants to domainate. If he open-sources OSX it would require that Apple share with the world. Lets look at past experiences with apple. I would say that it is totally contrary to their thinking. In the mind of Apple they would want to crush Microsoft, and ignore Linux.
Lets also remember that some of the people associated with this site were the first to notice the Sony DRM RootKit. The research that has been done on this site has really made it hard for rootkit developers to install their wares unnoticed - if you have the right tools. I could be wrong, but I think that Mark Russinovich from sysinternals has been there contributing to this site. It has led to the development of some really great tools such as the SysInternals RootkitRevealer - a really great tool by the way (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitReve aler.html)
I only have to say this is a perfect match. Everything both of these companies has done so far has been a disaster. Lets watch both of them slowly go down the drain.
The only pain will be the damage to the Novell linux distro
It seems that Oracle is not taking the threat from MySQL lightly. The purchases they have made have been quite public, but they also have been quietly hiring developers from many different open source projects. It is scary how many of them have dropped off the radar.
On a side note: I was always under the impression that MySQL was a 'amateur' database. I was very surprised when I was forced to switch from Microsoft SQL 2000 - MySQL had a much smaller memory footprint, and the performance just blew me away. To this day I still cannot believe the performance difference. It really speaks to the power of Open Source.
It makes me wonder how they could possible determine who owes what. If someone from the UK purchases digital goods from me in Michigan - how would they know the difference? It will require that businesses volunteer the info - not likely
What a crazy idea - the thought that you actually can do what you want with something you purchased. I wonder how long it is before the BSA finds some way of shutting these people down.
The big problem when they do this is compatibility testing. I work at numerous companies where we need to read through each patch to see what they 'fix'. Now when Microsoft does this we will just have to guess what they might break in a legacy application deployed across the world.
A slightly related comment - I used to work at a PC repair shop next to Best Buy. We would get a constant stream of customers that would be sent from Best Buy to our store after *they* broke the machine! Sometimes they would even walk right out after getting a machine from the customer and bring it to us. I laughed out loud when I started to see these geek squad commercials.
I can just imagine now the peeps at geek squad that use format and reload as their way tp fix any problem the computer has.
This totally ignores what the story is trying to drive home. The greed of the scientists is what drives them to support global warming. If they don't support global warming then they lose their funding, popularity, and their status as a scientist. I feel that in this way the global warming crowd is hurting the cause for a cleaner environment. (I believe that most global warming is fueled by sunspot activity - just look at the world around the 1500s - Look it up you will see)
The West is always berated for all the polluting we are doing. Has anyone ever been to China, Taiwan, or India? We really need to start working to educate these governments about pollution, and the environment. If only a few western countries cut back on pollution where will it get us if China is belching out billions of tons of pollution every day?
How about we cut the global warming crap, and just talk about the facts. Lets work to make the environment cleaner - for cleanliness sake. The air is dirty, and we want it clean. Our water is dirty and we want it clean. This is much easier to sell then fuzzy global warming theories designed to scare the crap out of us
It really is sickening when you are walking down the streets of Tainan, Taiwan and you have to wear a mask because the pollution is so bad. How come I never see or hear the global warming people complaining or doing anything with these countries? Why is that? Could it be that the only purpose is to use scare tactics so people will fund more of their research? I hope not.
I don't think for one minute a regular Mac user is going to even take advantage of the Boot Camp software. This is really aimed at converting those who use Windows all the time, and now have an excuse to buy a cool Mac machine.
You should have instead setup a site for first time Mac users - it would get a lot more attention.

Its funny. The founding fathers of the USA wanted to have a patent system
to protect the little guy. The little inventor that creates a new and novel item. That way a big bad company cannot steal it from him, and he never makes a dime.
Now it seems that it is just used by slimy lawyers to use patents as part of an extortion scheme to shake down big companies. Alternatively a way for big companies to keep anyone from ever entering their territory.
The sad part is I think it will only get worse - not better.
The most interesting part of this story is this line:
"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)," the notes in the original Google presentation state.
Chief Executive Eric Schmidt in his presentation made a cryptic comment that one goal of Google was to "store 100 percent" of consumer information."
Now, this service might just be vapor. But if it is real. Why would I want to give all my very personal information to a potential advertiser?
It makes me cringe all of the suckers out there that will store their private word, excel or other docs and have no idea how insecure it is.
They should have an assignment that each student rob, or break into a bank. Any attemps to break into school secured areas would result in immediate suspension.
Hmm. I could be wrong about this, but are they not leagally bound to relase the source to their browser? It looks like it is based on Konqueror, which I believe has a GNU license. Why are they even allowed to release it under a freebsd license?
