I think one of the solutions is to get companies to donate old equipment, or give it to organizations that will fix it up and give to the needy. I have seen companies trash perfectly good computers, but refuse to give them to anyone. These computers were far from useless, and could be used by grandma to get email and surf the net. I think if these type of programs were setup at companies it would reduce the level of waste considerably.
Still we need a solution to the problem of lead and other toxic chemicals leached into the soil. That makes me wonder...what happened to all the stories of businesses dumping this type of waste in rural China?

I think Intel is going to make a comeback and crush AMD. Here is why I think that: Imagine a world where Apple is pushing more boxes then Dell and all of them have an Intel Chip inside. They are only hurting right now because of the tiff they had with MS over their new 64 bit design. Developers did not like it since it had a totally different instruction set. With all the trouble with their new chips MS decided to put their full force behind AMD, and Intel suffered. It is too bad that such a large number of people are going to be out of work now:(
I am sure the top echelon of Intel will take massive pay cuts also...yea right...they will get multimillion bonuses for firing so many people.
This is another example of the media companies dictating what the consumer can purchase in the marketplace. They have been hampering innovation since the beginning of time. If it were up to media companies we wouldn't even been able to purchase a tape recorder back in the seventies, a VCR in the eighties, and an MP3 player in the 90s, and now they are doing the same with HD in the 00s. I bet Linux will step up to the plate and be able to play HD.
Interesting that it is founded by former Microsoft Employees. The way they will make a profit on it is by selling it as a piece of hardware. If done right I could see corporations buying stuff like this...could be a good replacement for the horrid MS SharePoint
Wow. This is really big brother. Essentially they put these on top of cop cars an the thing just starts searching 360 for license plates and drops them in the system. The trick would be to have enough police cars fitted with them to give back good data. Also it would not help track the car if it were in someone's garage.

I think they also spend way too much time on ideas that are aimed to hurt Microsoft (Such as the online spreadsheet idea) - these things are cool, but will anyone really pay for them? I think google executives know that the money train will stop someday soon, since they are selling their shares like crazy.

Looks like the solution is to fold up a piece of paper, and put it under the actual mouse button. This might work for a little while, but it is a laptop. I can see this paper falling in some other part of the laptop, like say a fan or a hot battery - and you will have a more interesting problem of fire, or CPU death.
A programmers programmer knows how to create programs that are easy to use, and easy to support. They don't crash all the time, and break everything when you upgrade to a new version. Lotus notes makes windows look like it is the best software ever made. I have been a developer for over 20 years, and just because I do support also doesn't mean I don't know what makes a good programmer.

I would totally disagree that he is a programmer's programmer. This is the guy that brought us Lotus Notes, and then a similar product named groove. Have you ever seen any company really using Groove? And on the lotus notes side - what a nightmare. I can't even think about that software without getting the shakes. The number of problems and issues I had when I was supporting it was crazy. On top of it all the program did not work like any other windows program... Causing tons of newbie headaches. I think Microsoft is in for a rough ride...
This piece reminds me of the software that the music industry invented, or possibly it was clear channel here in the usa that would listen to new songs and be able to pick out 'hits'. I agree that software in the world cup *might* help strategy, But I think many times it becomes a crutch that makes people lazy.
These low prices are only to gain market share, and things will change. I think it should cost as much as the consumer is willing to pay - at least that is how it works when you have a properly working capitalist system. But you see, the large telcos and cable companies have co-opted the system, and now are using legislation, and unfair practices to keep any competition from getting into the market. When is the last time you saw a new DSL provider *other* than the phone company? I am really worried that our options are getting smaller, and not larger - thus the prices will go up, and our bandwidth will not increase with the extra cost.
In that same vein, I feel that their next step is to start trying to sand-box their corner of the Internet. That way they control the content too. It is no good as a commodity to them, they want to monetize it to a greater extent. The only way in their eyes it to first keep you from going anywhere else, second make it so their content and services are always faster, and better. Look at what some of them do already with VOIP. When my VOIP provider is choppy, and high latency who do I blame? Most customers are not smart enough and blame the VOIP provider.

The speed increases are nice with this technology. The problem is physics. As it stands UWB runs from 3.1GHZ to 10.6GHZ. Radio in this band operates much like visible light - it is easily blocked by walls and other obstacles. Because of this I think that 802.11b/a/c/n are going to be around for a long time
Wow. After looking through their price sheet it looks like you could build your own cubesat for about $20,000 US. I guess inexpensive is a relative term - still really cheap compared to the prices of a regular satellite. I wonder how much it costs them to get it up in the air.
It is amazing to me that we have gotten this far without *more* control over the Internet. It is human nature to want to control or stop things you do not agree with. Look at the lengths the Chinese government will go to keep people from speaking their mind. Still, after all of these years, outside of these totalitarian countries I can speak my mind, be heard and not worry that I will see men in black that will carry me away.
You right that you are not in the same market - Now that I think about it, it really has no weight in the issue. Last year my 5 year old nephew came over for a month. I have zero games, and was not about to put out $50 for some game I would never play again. Found a very cool indy game that he and I played for weeks - only cost me $14.95. It was a typical 2D shootm up (Kinda like the games you would see in the old days on the Atari 2600, or Commodor 64), and it was a really fun time.
I have total respect for any Indy game developer. It is a very tough business to get into. It is so saturated with Hollywood types that are constantly taking a loss on $10 Million game projects. Building a game is such a gamble. Its not like a utility, or p2p app where you can gauge the interest in it - you never know until you release the game what type of response you will get. Sometimes these Indy guys work on a game for years, release it and get nothing back.
You can tell that things are really up in the air when long time enemies start making alliances - your enemies enemy is your friend. I say it great to watch them spend billions and squirm around.
