    There are just a couple of IDE's that are considered best of breed, and most other ide's have a niche capability that eventually get built into one or the other.

    The real issue is that open source does not innovate, it copies. There is no financial incentive for a developer to spend countless hours on a new niche capability when there is no reward at the end.

    Socialist/marxist utopian dreams aside, the reality is there is no reward that puts food on the table, or pays off a student loan.

    So innovation suffers.

    For example, Intellisense that Microsoft introduced in 1996, was a real innovation. All others are just copies. Someone was paid (handsomely) to produce intellisense.

    ...but not in the middle.

    Its great to focus your thoughts early. Its great to document those abstractions at the end, but trying to have the model keep up with the code as it is being developed for real is a complete waste of everyone's time.

    I was eagerly waiting for the new Mac Mini.

    I WANTED a Mac Mini.

    My brother (unfortunately) purchased a G4 laptop 3 weeks before they released the Macbook pro, so I was in no hurry to by the Mini until they released it with the new chip.

    I was expecting the same low price with a better processor.....like everything else tech.

    Then I see the actual price....and it costs far more than the original and for what? A new chip? A puny hard drive? Not alot of memory? No DVD writer?

    Apple......you can stick it.

    We have tools that allow us to find the bad guys among us. We have not had a major incident since 9/11/2001. Now, we tap into the phone of the guy who was planning to blow up the Brooklyn bridge. The bad guys don't know we can do this.

    A moonbat liberal lets that story out, gives aid and comfort to the enemy and lets loose with a majoe revelation about our technical capabilities.

    He is called a 'whisteleblower'. He is a national hero among moonbats.

    look at what MS has done over the past 5 years with database access libraries.

    We have had ODBC, Jet (various versions), SqlLib, RDO (various versions), ADO (many many versions). ODBCDirect, and now ADO.NET.

    All do the same thing...Open the database, Get The data, close the database, and move on.

    It is ridiculous.

    if an open source programmer toils day and night "for fun", is it fair that someone takes all that work and sells it as if it were his own...like any Linux distro?

    Open source is great for people out of work, or screwing around. It sucks if you have 3 kids and a wife, and need insurance, and all the other perks a job offers.

    Whine all you want about it, but precious few people make money from open source, and I don't see those folks sharing all that much.

    This has to be the dumbest idea I ahve heard on /. in almost 72 hours, and there were many to pick from.

    People want to be productive/efficient, even govt employees. Using open source software from a variety of vendors gets you as far away from that goal as you can get. Forcing the gov't to, on opurpose, make people inefficient is a huge waste of tax dollars.

    People choose to MS Office because it is superior to any, and I mean any, other comparable software on the market.

    Ralph Nader is unsafe at any speed.

    Do you honestly think that for really interesting games any virtual machine layer will not add so much overhead as to make the game unplayable? Sorta like Java Swing adds overhead to simple Windows apps...so you can get to see various Windows being repainted?

    Most people do not like watching Windows repaint.

    No offense to Sun...but the folks who are cutting edge on gaming will always write down to as specific as they can get to get as much performance as they can.

    Besides....doesn't it seem odd that Id Software
    has ALREDAY made it possible to play their games on any number of platforms...all by strictly coding in C.

    But Id Software doen't make java, or workstations. They just make great games.
