Suppose a software company sent me a CD in the mail and I ripped open the package with out bothering to read labels or license agreements, and put the CD in my CDR burned a bunch of copies with out ever installing it on my machine. Suppose I then and gave them away, or even sold them. Would I be guilty of piracy? Common sense tells me, no. The company sent me something with out me asking for it, I can't see how they can control what I do with it. Same goes for the CueCat, I didn't ask for it and did not enter into any agreement with DC, therefore I can do what ever I want with it including taking it apart, writing my own software for it, of even shoving it up my ass if I want to. (Not recommended!:)
What if the Linux battlebot was running a program that attempts to break into it's opponent electronically and defeat it by hacking it's O/S rather than smashing it with a chainsaw?
Isn't this the same industry that is pushing real hard to make it illegal to hack and publish ways to break commercial encryption schemes. Sure they are offering $10,000 now to anyone who can hack and break it, but what happens after it ships? My guess is that their tone will change and anyone who hacks it will be hunted down and persecuted.
So hack this puppy all you want, just don't publish what you find until after it has been released and is widely used:)
Somehow I think you (and severaly other posters) completely missed the point on the Neo-Victorian society. One of the common themes (if you can count two books) in Stephensons work is the idea that organized goverments will ultimately break down in the face of technology. In both Snow Crash and Diamond Age, the result is a large number of smaller goverments formed around some sort of shared ideal or commercial culture. In Diamond Age, it just so happens that one of the main groups in the book are a set of people organized around a shared ideal based on a Victorian society. This is not a prediction that nano technology will morph americans into neo Victorians, it is just an example of one possible group that may form in a world where large governments based on geographical borders no longer make sense.
Can any Comcast customers tell me if they perform regular portscans for servers? If so what address do the scans come from?
I'm getting hooked up this week (after waiting 2 months in vain for Bell Altantic to hook up my DSL) and fully intend to run ftp, http and email servers for personal use.

I think that anybody that subverts stuff like this to force unwanted advertising down peoples throats deserve whatever anybody does to them. Not that I'm suggesting that anyone should:) but if the script kiddies need to practice their DoS attacks, flatplanet.net would be a good place to start.
Does this mean that they will be releasing BFlat (or what ever) for Linux, Solaris, BeOS, MacOS, etc. Does this mean that I will be able to work and compile my programs under Linux and they will just run under Windoze, like I do now with Java? Somehow I think that the answers to these questions is "No Fucking Way". I think the boys at M$ are as confused about the meaning of "cross platform" as they are about the meaning of "innovation".
A.K Dewdney wrote a fictional account of a rope based computer in an issue of Scientific American. I always thought that it would be a lot of fun and an educational experience to try to implement a simple component, such an Adder, using the ideas in this article.
I don't think this is really an issue as the really smart ones don't use Exchange at all, the medium smart ones at lease enable IMAP so that it is accessible to different clients or from the Net, the stupid ones install it out of the box and leave it in it's native mode. The problem is that there are far too many stupid ones out there and it's them that most of us have to deal with. A lot of places will let you get away with using Linux if you do it quietly and don't rock the boat. Unfortuately going to your IT department and saying "Please enable IMAP on your mail server so that I can get at it from my Linux client" falls largely under Rocking the boat:)
Much as I hate Exchange, I hope that a high priorty for Evolution is to talk to it using it's native/proprietary protocol. Many companies run it in this mode with IMAP turned off, leaving people like me who run Linux completely out of luck for email. We really need an application for Linux to access an Exchange server running in this mode, fetchmail seems to have some sort of support for Exchange, but it is not well documented and I think it is targeted at some sort of buggering that M$ has done to IMAP.
The best way to deal with this is to send a polite email to the web master of any site that uses these (or any other M$ only extensions). Tell them that you would really like to view/use/support their site but unfortunately you are unable to see it. People creating web sites generally want them to be visible to the largest audience possible.
This kills me, it looks like M$ has basically started with a copy of Java, changed a bunch of keywords (eg. using vs import) and added a bunch of hacks and corruption to allow developers to write buggy code, just like they are used to doing with C++ on win32.
This thing is going to go the way of Bob.

Hacking The Tivo

The main thing i'd like to see done with the TIVO is to add an ethernet card to the thing to make it a node on my home network. This would allow the following sorts of things:
Get it to use my main internet connection to access the program info.
Allow other machines on the home network to configure it and talk to it through a Web interface.
Allow other machines to mount it's file system and access saved content for the purpose of either viewing it or archiving it.
Provide WebTV like internet access from the tv.
Provide local home network functionality and accesss from the TV.
Does anyone know if TIVO has any of the above in the works?
Suppose a software company sent me a CD in the mail and I ripped open the package with out bothering to read labels or license agreements, and put the CD in my CDR burned a bunch of copies with out ever installing it on my machine. Could someone please post a link to a mirror of the lastest version(0.0.9) of this.
Is available at chapters
If anyone has a new version, please put it up somewhere 0.05 is here
The O/S requires the chip, the chip requires the O/S. Seems like one way to try to block Linux out of their markets.

I can't agree more! The Windows 2000 CD makes an excellent coaster for my coffee mug
Can you supply a URL for this doc?

Advanced? I don't see no advanced button (installing on Linux).
Does the installer work through a proxy? If so how do you configure it?

I'm curious, what does Windoze CE use? Does it
just display a keyboard, or has M$ "innovated" their own version of Graffiti

Does anyone know what happend to crackdot's game Golgatha (sp?)
Maybe this will help. Also the FAQ is here. Personally I like the idea of someone working on an alternative/replacement for X, things change.
