I'm a little confused by these things. Is MPG4 a video compression format, a codec, a framework? Is this an open standard? Does this mean that file that is MPG4 playable on something that supports MPG4 or do you still need access to a proprietary codec? Inquiring minds what to know.
Don't under estimate their power and cleverness. Take for example a certain competator that decided to port their office suite to Linux and contribute heavily to the Wine project. While it may be debatable whether Corel has made a big difference in the Linux world, the M$ response is clear. Send some big bucks their way, show them a possible alternative (and windows friendly) way of surviving. What happens? Corel drops Linux. Look for more of the same in other places. Microsoft has the cash and the balls to do what every they can think of to strangle a competetor and Linux is the biggest threat they have ever faced.
It has about as much chance of success. Take a good look at Microsofts attempts to do anything different or branch out in new directions. Anything they have tried (msn, windows ce, event nt) have only survived and verly slowly been accepted because Microsoft has the deep pockets to keep trying and pushing and using their existing monopolies to slowly force their products into the main stream. Sure.NET will probably be accepted but it's going to take them 5-10 years to force it onto most peoples computers. Microsoft is the IBM of the new decade they are more strongly shackled by their legacy software than any company has ever been, it will not be easy for them to make any changes, and they may just find that once they get people to move off the windows platform, those people may decide that it is time to find a better solution altogether.
Cross platform support to Microsoft means Win[9.|ME] and [nt|2k]. I'd like to say the M$ does not care in the slightest about any other platform but that would be dead wrong. They fear all other platforms and.NET will be yet another weapon that they are designing to lock all other platforms out.
What a great platform Linux is for as both an teaching aid and as the basis for experimental work. All CS departments should adopt Linux as the basis for their operating system courses since it allows exactly this sort of experimentation.
All I do is create a symbolic link from the mozilla/plugins director to the blackdown
jre/plugin/i386/javaplugin.so file and it works
find. I was unable to get sun's 1.3 javaplugin.so
to work though
First of all I'd like to say that handhelds.org is not an IPAQ only community and we are currently looking to setup websites/mailing lists/etc that will help anyone looking to port linux to ANY handheld device. Please port Linux to the IPaq Internet Appliance. It looks like a nice piece of hardware, all it needs is an O/S!
As a developer and full time M$ hater i've found that Linux and Java are an excellent combination. First Java is an excellent language to program in, it's clean and aids in the production of good quality code in a short time frame. Ever wonder why the windows platform is sooo buggy, take a look at your typical M$ programmers C++ code sometime. The fact the Java is cross platform has allowed me to use Linux as my developement platform of choice even though the other people around me use windows. In the last year or so Linux has been promoted to a first tier platform in the Java world, now instead of waiting months for the latest version of the JDK, we have the choice of three good ones (Blackdown, IBM, and Sun's).
Why can't the hardware vendors make what we are all looking for...
It was meant to jokingly mean your average/.re. But really I think most net appliance vendors are really missing half their possible audience. On one hand you have potential customers such as your aunt Sally who really doesn't need a computer but wants access to the internet and email. They might buy one of these devices (with the ubiquitous MSN rebate). On the other hand you have much more knowlegable home network people that want some cheap cool devices that they can put in their kitchens or living room that give them access to the Internet and other machines on their network. So no, i'm not J. Random consumer but I am a person that is more likely to buy a cheap Internet appliance if i can work it into my world, and I am much more likely to buy one than your average consumer, and I'll bet there are a lot more people like me than you think.
I looked at this thing on the weekend, it looks ok if a little flimsy. The screen is pretty small and the gateway guy that I was talking to was unable to answer any of my techical questions. The UI was pretty and obviously there was no sign that the underlying O/S is Linux. Why can't the hardware vendors make what we are all looking for, which is a slick, cheap Linux based device that can run your standard internet applications locally and is extenisible through both Java and as an X terminal on your home network!
Sure someone with a clue will know how to turn the feature off, but what will your dad think when he runs non-M$ sanctioned programs and it pops up warnings to the effect that they are dangerous and may trash his computer. Many people are going to be tricked into only buying M$ products because of this. Yet another subtle way that the evil empire is using it's monopoly position push all competition out of the market.
US Patent #2303827873498277393 - Trees are green
on
Squatting On Life
·
· Score: 2
Please note that I have recently received a patent on the fact that trees are green and intend to encorce it to the max. From now on, anyone that wishes to depict trees in the colour green must apply for a license from my new company Trees Are Green, Inc. anyone caught depicting green trees without a license will get their asses sued.
I have to disagree. If you are a production company wanting to mock up a futuristic UI for your hero, you are going to get something to show much faster on Unix than either windoze or the mac for the simple reason that there is so much code availble to tweak and modify. With open source, you don't need to re-invent the wheel, just take some one elses wheel and start whacking it with your hammer:)
Somewhat off topic but does anyone know what system the guy on Dark Angel it using, it looks pretty slick, a lot of use of transparant windows. It also looks functional as I've seen the guy drag stuff around.
showkey -s shows you the scan codes. I can see the scan codes for the extended keys such as 0xe0 0x24 for one of them. I believe that I should be able to assign keycodes to these keys using setkeycodes. eg, 'setkeycodes e024 123' should set the key code for that key, unfortunately after I do this and do a showkey -k, I don't see any key code reported for the key that I set.:)
I just switched to the Logitech cordless desktop pro and love it, especially the mouse. Not having to drag the cord around is great! Now if I could just get the extened keyboard keys working under Linux and X. I've found some info on how to do this but it is not concise and complete. Pointers anyone?
Well, first of all, Linux is about having the choice to run the software you want. Wine is providing us with more choice which is great. That said, I would prefer to not use any M$ products at all, unfortunately, I work in an environment where people do use these products and I must exchange files with them. Until StarOffice, Corel,.... get thier products to the point where they are 100% compatable at least at the file level, I can't use them because people get pissed off when i mess up the format of the document. The only way that anyone is going to replace M$ products in the work place is to provide something that works well and fits in seamlessly.
I'm not an expert in license agreements, but is it not legal to move your copy of windows from one machine to another? Because in this day and age, it seems to me that many people need to upgrade or replace their hardware every couple of years while not necessarily having to replace thier O/S. I'm sure that there are still a lot of people running windoze 95 even though thier machines are newer that 5 years old.
I had to delete my.mozilla directory, otherwise the thing core dumps. Also, the installer does not seem to work through a proxy, but the entire download is available from their ftp site.
I'm not saying that i'm opposed to progress or even nano technology, it's just that as we progress, the protential to create something we can't control increases. And if you think about it, its can be pretty scary, there is a very good chance that the last word that will be spoken on planet earth will be Oops!
I don't know about the rest of you but I think nano technology is terrifying. We are getting very close to the point where there will be lots of people creating things that have never existed before in nature and for which there is no natural protection. The potential for accidental or intentional mass distruction is enormous. Think about the paranioa of genetically modified food, which is at least very close to something that exists in nature. Who knows what will happen to Molecule X when you weld a new Oxegen atom to it!

If this puppy runs Linux :)

I've backed up a couple of times to CDRW, but haven't found a way that is convenient or easy to restore. Recommendations anyone?

I've figured out this much:
:)

I think you want to do a showkey -k. I can see the expected key codes for my keyboard but haven't got them wired up yet.
I just switched to the Logitech cordless desktop pro and love it, especially the mouse. Not having to drag the cord around is great!
