This does not bode well for the future of large corporations. I wish people would stop things like this, and I hate Microsoft but I don't want the government to mess around in private enterprise. This is not about goverment intervention in private business, this is simply a case where free enterprise has fallen out of control and the goverment must step in and push things back in line. Microsoft has clearly abused their position and power. They have and will continue to use their monopoly positions in both operating systems and applications to push themselves deeper and lock out any chance of competition. If the government doesn't slap them down who can and will?

This is what I mean. From the Orbit Beginners Documentation FAQ

Does ORBit work with other ORBs?

Yes. This is one of the primary features of CORBA, and available through the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP). There is one pitfall: ORBit has a proprietary security mechanism to authenticate clients. If interoperability is desired then you might have to figure out a work around for this.

As a Java programmer, I would like to play with the Orbit, the Gnome ORB, from a Java program. So far I have not seen any information as to how to do this. I've asked the gnome list and no one there could help me. From what I understand Orbit more or less a standard Corba ORB but it uses some sort of different authentication scheme. Does this make it incompatable with other ORBs, or does it still work? Can anyone provide pointers or information on this?

I always hated the OSF for forcing one of the major splits in the Unix world. They were a knee jerk response to Sun and AT&T trying to create a unified base for Unix to move forward. The only useful thing OSF ever came up with was motif, but it was never open. I could never figure out why they would push it as a standard UI while pricing it out of reach of the hacking community. I suppose it's too late now that we have gtk+ and qt, but it would still be nice to be able to download and install the motif RPMs for free so that we can build xmcd and other useful apps.

Sure writing the script is easy to do. The hard part is to mail it to pine/elm/.. users and get their mailer to automatically execute it when they open their mail. In Outlook this is appearent easy to do. Thats why Outlook is so evil, this current virus seems to execute as soon as the victim opens their mail.

How anyone could write an application with such a feature is beyond me. Why anyone would willingly install the thing on their machine is also beyond me. Which brings me back to the point of my original post. System admins and IT managers need to be made well aware of what they are getting into when they base their corporate email system on this crap. I work for a large investment bank and our email has been down for over half a day now because of this thing. I can't even guess how much it's costing the firm.

What they lose is they legitimize a platform that they often tell people is "not up to the job" and "not robust enough". Plus they help pave the way to loosen their death grip on the market. If I were an IT manager, i'd look at this and think. Hmm maybe I really can replace windows on the desktop, get a lot more stable environment but not have to give up all those bloody applications that i paid through the nose for.

I can see that this is good for Vmware as it solves some potential worries about M$ attacking them through licensing schemes that only allow windoze to be run on actual hardware. I guess this is good for VMware users because it might mean that windoze runs better on VMware and better supports the virtual machine. But what I don't get is why this is good for M$, what do they gain? What they lose is that they are helping people make the break to a more stable platform and relegating windoze to be simply an application launcher and runtime environment.
