  1. Presumed Expectations on Researcher Trolls MMO, Surprised When Players Hate Him · · Score: 1

Me thinks, and this is without ever playing the MMO in question, that in killing villains, the doctor was affecting other players. Presumably, their only recourse was to go after him, with what sounds like varied success. In my eyes, he was being ostracized and criticized not because he was being different, as the article states, but very much because he was affecting game play and online activities of other people. Just because he was following the rules as set by the MMO does not somehow, in my eyes, give him a right to disregard the customs and traditions as set by players. An MMO, at least, means little without the community behind it and thus, to some extent, the community becomes the voice and law where none is set forth by the developers.

In that sense, I can't imagine what kind of a reaction he might have otherwise expected. Surely, as a professor who studies video games, he must also know a little about human nature. it boggles the mind that he might've genuinely believed that so long as game rules were followed, no one would fault him for being a troll.

    Just a thought.

  8. Re:Allow me to explain it. on Linspire Releases Controversial Version 6.0 · · Score: 1

    Linux is not Microsoft Windows.

Agreed, but in many ways, on the desktop, Linux is an alternative to Windows. People want to be able to use Linux (GNU or otherwise) but still be able to compete with their Windows-using counterparts. That's where Linspire, Mandriva One, PLF (non-free) and other workarounds come in handy, to enable Linux users to create content and enjoy content created on Windows machines by users who are not aware that some of their peers are not legally allowed to enjoy what they've made.

That's the cool thing about Linux, I think. On one hand, it can compete well in the server environment, it can be totally free (as in freedom) but it's still versatile enough to allow almost anyone (see Ubuntu, Linspire, etc) to find "workaround" to see/create/user content they might not have been able to, otherwise.

    Pick your poison?

For those too lazy to read the links, the reports have gone as such. If you're in the majority, a hacked iPhone reverts to a clean slate after the update. If you're unlucky, it refuses to accept sim cards, legit or otherwise. If you're super unlucky, you start with an un-hacked, perfectly legit phone that still turns into iBrick. 3rd party software is no longer in the menus but is probably still hiding somewhere in the phone itself.

If someone were to discover my bank password, to use your analogy, and shout it out to the world, logically I would change my password and then take steps to make sure it was better protected. Since it is my fault that someone else known my password, then blaming the people who know it for knowing it seems redundant. A little too late, since they *know* it and I can never erase it from their heads.

In that same vein, the idea that when I buy a DVD, especially one of high quality, I am buying not only the right to have a disk in my hands but the right to watch it. Why else buy the movie? If, for whatever reason, this is impossible (don't have the right OS, Player, Monitor, etc), I have now wasted money and probably cannot get it back. In this case, fair use should be on my side. So long as I do not go out and resell it without proper authority, I should be allowed to watch what I bought, correct? I'm not a thief or a file sharer, and if I want something, I go through legal means to do it, so why should I or anyone else be punished for being well within the law?

So, in the end, what the AACS did in sending the cease and desist requests was sort of like saying "forget this ever happened, there is no magic number". Not only did that go against people's rights to say what they wish, but more importantly, it showed that the company cared more about bullying the online community than they did about fixing the problem. Not only did they outright disrespect everyone who was not guilty of breaking their content protection but also asked and succeeded indirectly in censoring our voices.

Switch to some other systems (pick your own poison) and forget that MS even exists. Don't like their attitude, don't like their spyware, then don't take it. Sitting around and complaining how much they suck does no good because it encourages them. You talk about WGA and they know people are paying attention, they know that their product is impacting you, and since you've already been branded a thief in their eyes, they now see you as whining about a product that locks you our of your PC. Sure, for most geeks, this is a blatant lie but remember that Windows was not made solely for the technically-savvy. Pick up the pieces and move on, choose your own path, your own operating system. I'll go with that. I get this feeling that all these definitions are just ways of keeping people from what they want (the software itself and sometimes the ability to modify it, for themselves and for others). Arguing definitions seems pointless when it's all say-so. Any site can call itself open source and claim a definition but that doesn't change/influence anything. I think instead of defining these vague terms that mean nothing to most people, just state what you want and do not want done with your specific code. That way if you say something of yours is free, then everyone else can look at what you allow and don't allow and decide for themselves. *sigh* Sounds simple, means it will never work.
