but I quite often hear statements to the effect that Windows and OS-X look better than KDE/Gnome. Have you ever seen what people are doing to their desktops? Sure it's half an hour (or half a day) tweaking the stuff a bit, but seriously, stuff like this looks better than OS-X to me, and this looks a lot better than Vista, never mind XP. It just seems somewhat unfair that Linux is seen as being the uglier OS, just because some people run XFce on the 486-33's and compare that with Vista on a dual-core with 5 gigs ram.
And that was just stuff I found from the first page now, I've seen lots of nicer stuff, both eyecandy-wise and usability-wise.
no but seriously, I know Chernobyl could never happen "here" (wherever that is) because our designs are so different yada yada, but the fact is that Chernobyl was considered safe until such a time that the meltdown occured. People had simply not thought of that particular problem until it actually happened. Unfortunately, the same "this is completely safe and can under no circumstances have an accident" attitudes are still prevalent now.
The point is, we don't really know if it's 100% safe, for the simple reason that we don't know all the factors involved infinitely well. Hence, for me, the problem with Nuclear power will always be that while it's almost 100% safe, if for some unforeseen reason it does fuck up, we'll be really really fucked afterwards.
We might be sort of fucked anyway, but I think mitigating the risks couldn't hurt.
I really agree with the AOPA on this one. Keeping them out of "commercial", or controlled airspace isn't really going to do the trick, since most private flight takes place outside of controlled airspace too (except for business jets etc). Collision avoidance in uncontrolled airspace is 100% the responsibility of the pilot.
The question is, what happens when there is no pilot? Who will be at fault if there is an incident where one of these things cause a plane to crash? The "advantage" they have in being hard to notice is hardly an advantage for us...
I guess I'm lucky I don't live in the states, that is until our government promptly follows suit, as they often do..
I know you don't wear swimsuits when you take showers. Well, actually one of the things which I found funny when I first moved to England was the notice in public bathhouses, that require you to keep your swimming trunks ON while in the shower.. back home they have similar notices only they say you need to take them OFF..
anyway, I hope I didn't offend anyone, I really was just kidding..
what'dya expect? Australians are one of the very few countries actually rivalling the US when it comes to being hung up on sex issues. I mean, the wear swimsuits when they take showers.
Thenagain, I come from the other extreme, so I guess I'm sort of biased here.. (the other being Scandinavia).. I remember once seeing a late night show in the US, the whole idea of which was to show commercials that could never have been aired in the US.. like that was the whole point of it.
yes, you gotta love the met speak weather reports. Wonder why that is though, that aviation is so full of acronyms, I have a licence myself and half the theory exams felt like they were just about recognizing acronyms..
oh, and to all you people writing weather applets -- CAVOK doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be sunny, just that the Ceiling And Visibility is above a certain level (and hence deemed OK). It can be completely overcast, just as long as the clouds are high enough.
and I must say, the clip was not really something anybody on this side of the ol' pond would likely get upset about, as long as it was shown after 6 pm or something. But then that's just different cultures, and so on blah blah, you guys like violence, we like sex - we've all heard it before and it's not likely to change anytime soon.
But what was REALLY funny was the write up of what the clip was going to contain!
and I quote
"
- A teenaged girl wearing just a bra and panties is sitting astride the lap of a teenaged boy kissing him while another girl in just a bra and panties fondles them both. The first girl is also shown making sexual bump and grind motions.
- Two other teenaged girls are sitting on either side of a teenaged boy, fondling him while another group of teens smoking pot and drinking beer watch them from the sofa on the other side of the room.
- A shirtless teenaged boy starts to remove his pants
- A teenaged girl with her back to the camera appears to be wearing nothing but panties. She appears to be sitting astride a teenaged boy kissing him while another girl in just a bra and panties fondles them both.
- There is a quick shot of a pile of naked flesh, mostly arms and legs, though obviously belonging to multiple teens. "
I mean shit this was like a ten second clip, they must have been watching it like a thousand times!! Playing, then pausing to really take in the scene.. I'll bet you a hundred bucks whoever did that had to go jerk off like 10 times before finishing..
Anyway I hope they do get fined, if nothing else just because it reinforces all our fun negative stereotypes about americans..:)
... but as far as I can remember, MP3 playback and DVD stuff worked out of the box on Ubuntu for me. Or did I install additional repositories and just forgot about it? I'm not 100% on DVD, but I'm pretty much sure MP3 always used to "just work".
Or is it possible Ubuntu stick those things into distro's that are going outside of the US by default?
Anyway, I don't think getting the stuff automatix does manually is necessarily that hard, but I can't say that I didn't use it myself last time I set up a box...
I guess I'm about the 100th person who will say this to you today, but you really need to get up to speed with what's happening in Linux these days.. Hang on a moment, I have some updates to download, just give me one second..
*presses colourful icon in top right corner* *loud harddisk noises*... there all done, and no need to restart the computer either. Why is that in windows anyway? It's very annoying to have to do it every time I install a new little piece of software.
Anyway, yeah, go check out some of the newer distros, you'll be pleasantly surprised I'm sure. Just give us a few years, and we'll have this whole thing sorted with a capital S. Think about Linux development compared to Windows.. who's moving faster?
Take for instance my wireless network card. Didn't work out of the box in Windows, did in Ubuntu. It's not the only thing either. Most USB peripherals (all of the ones I have, but that's not that many admittedly) also work out of the box, often better and faster than in windows (my MP3-player comes to mind, windows is reaaallyy slow in copying stuff to it, for no reason I can think of.)
I don't need to compare setting up Apache on Linux to IIS. I've never worked with IIS (what is that anyway, never heard of it?), but I set up my first ever Linux webserver box a few months ago, with zero experience. It took me about an hour. I really don't see IIS improving on that. And even if it does, what's the point? Why would you even need to do it faster? And I mean, come on, editing config files is not really that scary when you get used to it. Most of the stuff is labelled well enough for even a retard like myself to understand what it's for, and if I'm not sure, I make a backup and test it. If it gets f**cked up, I revert to the old one.
I think actually a server environment is one of the places where having to do everything in a GUI actually slows things down. Just being able to SSH into my server from anywhere and doing everything I need in a few keystrokes is a real good advantage.
And that's total bullshit. OS X is arguably easier to learn for someone who's new to computers altogether, but anyone who has only ever used Windows before, faced with a Mac, is going to have a terribly frustrating time just trying to resize a window ("I click on the left edge and drag, to make it wider, and the window moves instead! What's with that?"), let alone figuring out how on earth the Dock is supposed to work.
no, actually THAT'S total bullshit. anyone who doesn't learn the basics of OSX in about five minutes is a retard. and I'm not a mac fanboy, in fact a lot of their stuff is a little bit annoying in always trying to make things too easy, and in the process making them harder (or atleast more onerous and time-consuming). but to say that the dock for instance is not a brilliant and very intuitive tool is simply not true.
I know, it would be cool with a billion pixels, and 15.1 sound systems and all that, but honestly, when is someone going to start making movies worth while watching again? I mean seriously, my biggest problem is finding stuff worth the time watching -- not that my TV is too small, or the resolution too low. I mean, my eyes are only this good, I honestly don't think I can tell that much of a difference.
Anyway, that's todays rant about the state of modern culture all done with. I feel better already.
i remember reading this back in the day actually.. strange days are afoot in the world, no doubt. what did the guy say this micro-singularity was about again? this is the basis of time travel, if memory serves me right?
What are you talking about, Nintendo was nothing, SEGA was the bomb!!!11
No but really, the sega master system was a good console, and never really got the recognition it deserved. Sort of like how the Atari ST was actually better than the Amiga. Ah, the memories...
And to all the people who laugh when you tell them that the record companies would rather have you pay twice or more for music that you already bought, well here's proof. They really, honestly, do believe that what you bought is not yours. It's still theirs to do with as they please.
Starting tomorrow, I'm going to start bringing my CD's back, even old ones. Nothing of this was mentioned when I bought them, and I don't think this is fair. Hence I want my money back. I urge everyone to do the same.
I don't recall seeing any news stories on Slashdot about those crazy, depressed Finns.
Dude, have you _been_ to Finland?
No, but honestly, even though you may not have seen them here, such stories abound all over the world. It's either them, or us (swedes) and how we don't have sunlight for half the year, bla bla yada yada. What I've never seen is a story about how new-and-improved-capitalist Russia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. I thought they were ok now? Now that they've embraced democracy. *cough cough*
with regards to p2p copying etc, is that the money "lost" by artists etc is money that they would have never seen anyway. i haven't bought a single CD in years, and i have never ever bought a DVD. whether or not i have access to p2p networks or not the issue -- during certain periods i have had such access, during certain others i have not. the whole point is, even though i had no access to any *NEW* music or movies whatsoever, i still didn't buy any.
why?
because it's honest to god not such an important part of my life. if i really cared about movies, i would spend the extra cash and get better quality etc. same with music. now the question is, is it morally wrong for me to watch downloaded movies etc? in any way more than for instance watching them through a shop window, or at a friends house, or sneaking into the cinema or whatever. does it matter to anyone if i saw it or not? the cash is just not ever coming close to their pocket. nothing can be done about that.
another thing completely is the fact that there is no proven link between downloads and lost record sales. and why should there be? there's no such link between people listening to the radio -- on the contrary, people buy songs they heard on the radio. the same applies to downloaded songs.
.. don't market and sell you music/films in france. or anywhere else where this is legal/legalish.. if it really makes a difference to the people who are "stealing" your music, they will stop doing it. unless of course, your stuff is sooo shit that nobody could care less if you made more of it. in that case, you're screwed.
but I quite often hear statements to the effect that Windows and OS-X look better than KDE/Gnome. Have you ever seen what people are doing to their desktops? When you light a campfire with a match, you get more energy out than you put in.
Sorry, this is not a recipe for perpetual motion. For a new energy source, maybe, but not
perrpetual motion.
Well, we certainly don't need another one of those... "back to the drawing board, guys!".
So, how's the lung cancer rate over there?
no no, how's the lung cancer rate in the Chernobyl area..
What are you talking about, Nintendo was nothing, SEGA was the bomb!!!11
