  1. 5 step plan on Experts Oppose Classifying Gaming Addiction As Mental Disorder · · Score: 1

Here's a simple 5 step solution to online gaming addiction that i can share. Try it. 1st) find the Soft Stone of Washing (soap) and use on the underarms. It will make you nicer to be around and help a great deal with stages 3+ 4 below. 2nd) use the trick of "absorbing daylight" to improve your appearance. this has been known to help with mood points as well. 3th) talk to the ones that call themselves "the WomenFolk" They are elusive and can be as welcoming as a giant cave bear at first, but they can offer a great deal in terms of friendship, understanding and more besides! 4th) find something that you enjoy doing (outside of a juvenile fantasy world that is!) and see if you can make some money/help people while doing it. This part can be a bit tricky but it is most satisfying when it works out. 5th) your quest is over pilgrim. enjoy!

The BBC are the good guys, remember?

er... they most certainly are not the good guys.

from one year to the next they have lowered standards further and further, to the present point where their existence (and the license fee) can definitely no longer be justified.

there are hardly any current affairs or docs on anymore; instead we get shedloads of cookery, hideous karaoke, home improvement, crime dramas and suchlike

you can always pull out the "if thats what people want then..." but that won't wash. Mass media shapes as well as reflects the desires and attitudes of its audience. What happened to the optimistic days of the "Ascent of Man" or "Civilisation". repeating sitcoms again and again and again until they become "comedy classics" is not in the public service i'm afraid

credit where credit is due, http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/inourtime/inou rtime_history.shtml/ is pretty good, but should each household pay more than £100 for this?

i know people who work at the beeb and it makes a fortune from gardening mags, phone-ins, dvds etc....where does all this cash go? the uncritical and repetitive mess that is news 24?

on the drm issue, imo they shouldn't even consider it

obviously a great deal of their back catalogue will be chipmunks mating, wildebeest being chased and then eaten alive by hyenas etc. but I was really looking forward to perusing the OU archives and enjoying the sight of some of those kipper ties again. everyone around the world ought to be able to share in this guilty pleasure.

  7. Re:It seems to me.. on RIAA President Decries Fair Use · · Score: 0

OK -the most important thing to understand is that most people don't have a problem paying artists for the work they've done, after all how could they?

What they don't like is the way that the music "business" gets the lions share of the cash that is spent on CDs etc. However unfair 'fair-use' may seem, nothing is more unfair than the disgusting cut artists get from the sale of their work, and the profits that the 'industry' side of things ends up with.

Without getting into the fact that the music business is one of the most exploitative, monopolistic and unpleasant businesses in existence, its hard to deny that they have used their position to rip off both their customers and the artists again and again.

In a way they can't be blamed for this; if you allow a fox in with a load of chickens then who is to blame for the resultant carnage? (there's the metaphor you warned against- sorry!)

To give you a good example - why did an inverse relationship develop between the cost CDs in the shop, and the actual cost of making the things? Why do artists get pennies or end up in dept even after they're sold shed-loads of albums?

You or i may be in a position to spend lots of money on music, but lots of people can't afford to, and are forced to go without why - because some talentless suit wants to upgrade his lexus?

Ok, you can turn round and say "its a market- you don't have to buy their product!" Well thats not good enough im afraid. Music and art are more important than that type of mentality, and that is not the direction that things are moving in - like it or not. Not to say the notion of intellectual property is a thing of the past (there's the hyperbole you warned against), but until a system comes along that sees the consumer and the artist treated fairly, then most people are not interested in paying through the nose for content that is overpriced and crippled in one way or another.

The technology we have today allows for the consumer to cut the middle man out almost completely from the loop. Now no-one would expect these middle men to facilitate this process, but the point is that its only the mass-downloading and illegal sharing of content that will finally shake these parasites off.

Actually it's the uk government that is nauseating.

When you look at some of the facts it might be a bit easier for you to understand why we dont trust them at all.

First off , they are corrupt; some of the closest people to Tony Blair have been arrested recently and taken away in handcuffs. BTW, the British media like to reserve the word corrupt for 3rd world govts and prefer to use the term sleaze, but thats just the usual Orwellian crap.

In terms of these "alerts" you may not hear about them but there've been countless occasions on which the govt have taken very theatrical action against some imaginary enemy, quite often to distract from other unpleasant stuff they're engaged in. The worst example of this was our corrupt home secretary literally sending the tanks into Heathrow airport, believe it or not. It turns out there was no justification for this. Also the number of times chemical weapons have are supposed to have been manufactured by terrorists in this country and whole areas have been sealed off is almost into double figures.

The real problem with Tony Bliar et al is that they took this country to war on the basis of lies. The fact that this war has proved to be a big mistake is not the point here- its that you don't produce dodgy dossiers and use them to try to sway the UN unless you are up to no good, lets face it. He's a liar and most British people i know don't trust him or his govt one bit.

In this case it may turn out to be a genuine bomb plot and obviously we all want to see these swine stopped and brought to justice. But please forgive us for being sceptical.
