I can see geeks having a lot more decision making power on their companies hardware purchasing then influencing a senator or congressman anyway right?
The recovery (learned through painful experience) is to go to individual package install instead of taking it in groups and you deselect the package that gives grief.
I do agree w/ you however that a package that completely fscks your install (whatever package that maybe) shouldn't be on any cd.

Umm as someone who had the misfortune to use ste/ice on M1-A1 Abrams, let me be the first to say that _anything_ has to be better than ste/ice.
If (oh hell WHEN) ste/ice crashes you get to send the unit off to some Godforsaken depot level maintanance unit for replacement because you can't debug or fix the thing locally.
The reason they used ste/ice to begin with is because you could teach Joe Shmoe from Idaho to hook up the thing and go through a checklist for diagnosing electronic faults and all sorts of other test problems, but when it goes down you get to fall back on actually knowing whats wrong w/ the vehicle.
In other words, when ste/ice fscks up, you better have a whole crew of really knowledgeable people around to fix it.
As far as ste/ice costing too much to replace, cmon man; you really think that's a major hindrance? We're talking about a government that literally threw out supplies to keep their quota the same fom month to month.
(I don't blame them for that, the supply situation was bizzare during wartime from all accounts.)
As far as the whole, GPL no kill proviso, remember, some of the benefits of these could be to the poor schmuck National Gaurd unit called out during a flood; w/ cheaper more reliable diagnostic tools, they could keep their vehicles in running order for when everybody would appreciate it.

Im going out on a shaky limb here, being as my programming skills are lightweight to say the least... but.
What would happen if someone used a "Melissa" like delivery system to utilize perl installed on other systems?
Wouldn't that bypass the normal logging procedures at contest sites? As I said before, I have absolutely no idea if this is even possible, but it's an interesting concept, eh?
And yes, I realize that at this point, Outlook using (MS) systems aren't likely to have Perl installed, but look at the MS/Activesoft deal, could be something to look for? (I dunno:)
I apologize in advance for any holes in my idea that you could drive a truck through, I only mention it out of curiousity.
That Netscape was stable enough for me to use? Heck yes.
Unfortunately, it locks up my computer so often I was finally forced to d/l IE 5.0. To my great horror a Microsoft product has, so far at least, blown NS4.6 out of the water in both speed and reliability.
To soothe my sense of conscience, I have of installed the Neoplanet "window dressing" over the core IE5 components. It just looks better to me.
As soon as Netscape has a version of Mozilla ready to use, (or communicator 5.0) I will be more than happy to scrap IE off my system, I hope this DOM announcement is a sign of progress to that happy day.

If there's one thing I AM able to do, it's lock up Netscape like a finger trap, almost 2 or more times every day. (I surf a lot:)
So if I use a pre alpha (not EVEN ready for prime time) browser, I know I can fry it on a regular basis. Generating lots of bug reports.. which lead to a better OS browser, which helps people.
So if altruism is your thing, hey you could do worse than to loan a few extra cpu cycles to a nice little project... even if your not as hard on software as me.
