See mirroring is like...well a mirror. If you stand before one and stick a fork in your eye your mirror-image does the same. In real time. Analogies are there for a reason.

There's a major flaw in your analogy. See, if I stick a fork in my right eye, the mirror image will stick a fork in his left eye. Between the two of us, however, we still have one good left AND right eye. So ipso fatso, I have a complete backup.

I got a pretty good deal on a 3850 a while ago. The reviews (real reviews and customer reviews) consistently said that it had a fairly quiet fan on it, but there were a fair number of people saying it wasn't really quiet at all. I got mine and I have no idea how anyone can consider that shrill whine to be 'quiet'. I tried cutting the fan down to 15-20% to see how that was, and surprisingly, that made the fan spin faster (I guess it was at ~10% by default). I ended up ordering an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1, which has been absolutely wonderful (my older passive VGA cooler wouldn't mount on the 3850). I've used a few of their case fans and proc fans and I can't recommend their stuff enough. Very QUIET high quality parts for fairly cheap. Oh yeah, just the cooler running passively has lower temps than the stock cooling fan, so you don't even need the fan add-on most of the time.

how do you people buying this stuff get over the noise of the fans? and how often do you have to exchange the fans? i buy only hardware with speed-to-noise ratio near infinity.

Easy--they're deaf. After years of working on building (near) silent PCs, I've learned that what many people/reviewers consider to be 'quiet' is nowhere near my definition of 'quiet'. I'm not quite sure how loud some gamers have their sound systems turned up, or if they play with the window open or what, but I simply can't trust a review on newegg or most websites when someone says a piece of equipment is 'silent'. There are a few websites like silentpcreview.com that do a good job, but if a piece of equipment isn't reviewed there or in the forums, you're SOL (or you get to be the guinea pig).

  12. Isn't this usually a concern on Microsoft Knew About Xbox 360 Damaging Discs · · Score: 3, Interesting

TFA says discs can get damaged when moving the console around/reorienting it (point it eastwards?!?) while there's a disc inside. Now, I tend to take the discs out before I move my equipment around, so I may be wrong. But isn't this usually a concern with ANY device with an optical drive? Or is it far worse with the 360 thanks to their superior engineering?

  13. Re:This is an inaccurate article title on RIAA May Be Violating a Court Order In California · · Score: 1

What you describe is exactly where editorial oversight should come into play. The article headlines are chosen by the article submitter, so it's no surprise that they are often wrong (along with the summary obviously). However, the editors around here rarely alter the headlines so that they're more correct. So while they may (every now and then) add an editorial blurb to the end of the summary clarifying the issue, they'll usually leave it with the misleading headline. But apparently Taco et al like sloppiness, so that's the way it is around here.

I don't know why such bullshit gets through the slashdot filters, frankly. If you look at the tags on any given article it's clear that most of the slashdot community knows exactly what is going on, even despite attempts to get us up in arms over another misleading headline, or half-baked no-facts 'story'.

I'm not sure what bizarro-slashdot you visit, but the one I read generally does not have readers that are aware of what is going on. First, because two or three people tag an article correctly (that's all it took last time I did some testing with the tags) does not mean that even a simple majority of the users/readers understand the story. Second, one need only read through the comments at a low threshold on just about any mildly-confusing story to see that this is the case. Thankfully, we do have a moderation system that generally works pretty well to help filter out the nonsense. And finally, this article is one of those rare instances where an editor here actually did add something to help clarify the issue.

  17. OS X on The Economist Suggests Linux For Netbooks · · Score: 0

I'm planning on picking up a netbook (Samsung NC10) so that I can slap OS X on it and replace my aging iBook (2001 model). Sure, the netbook will be incredibly underpowered for a lot of things (that's what the desktop machine is for), but it will be a step up from the iBook, which still gets a fair amount of use as a small web-browsing, chat, light workload machine. And on top of that, the thing is tiny. I can cover about 1/3-1/2 the cost after selling the original Airport card (those things still go for 40-50 bucks on eBay!) and stripping it down and parting it out. Not a bad little upgrade.
