"Microsoft didn't fix the underlying security issues."
"Like what ?"
See below a quote from The Register; "Microsoft bug squashers are investigating reports of a serious security vulnerability in Windows operating systems that could allow attackers to take control of vast numbers of machines, particularly those located off US shores.
A Microsoft spokesman had only minimal details about the investigation...the flaw affects every version of Windows including Vista and is actually the continuation of an old vulnerability that Microsoft supposedly fixed years ago."
I did exactly the same as this editor guy did. I gave Vista 2 months (a record compared to all other IT guys I know) It failed. A short list of problems were; Install was a nightmare Wirless networking is a pain Not playing DVDs consistantly
So after 2 months I thought I would give Ubuntu a go. It's been great so far and to my suprise my father has followed me and is also running Ubuntu. Yes I have had problems, but not so many as I did with Vista.
In my opinion, for a business desktop there have been no problem I have not been able to overcome with Ubuntu. Wine runs the made for Microsft programs and there are GNU/Linux apps that are great.
Of corse thats just my opinion, and I wouldn't have tried Ubuntu if Vista hadn't been so bad.
I'm proud to have lasted a whole 2 months using Vista until I got sick of all the problems. (That I've posted so many times before) I'm proud about it because it was like an endurance test of - hmmm this isn't working, I wonder if I can fix it, oh it's a feature, damn!
I have also installed Ubuntu and impressed everyone with the spinning 3d cube desktop - Yes I'm a show off - It's great.
As a side note my father bought a brand new HP Laptop today with Vista installed - he will be installing Ubuntu tomorrow - another Vista "Sale"
I wont argue, except to say that I have enough experience to realize that you can do installs on the same hardware and have different results.
So don't put others down because you have had little or no problems!
I have been using Vista Business for a few months now, and the installation took quite a while and a lot of work to complete. It runs quite well except for; 1. Wont play DVDs consistently - Windows Media player sometimes plays sound with no picture. 2. Network connection is equally weird - sometimes it works with no problems and other times it just will not connect. 3. I have a new problem of not going into sleep mode sometimes.
It's not that I have these problems that worries me, but the fact that they are so intermittent.
Oh well, I have already decided like most others around that Vista is not ready for my customers yet.
Just to add the UAC prompt does NOT come up all the time and does NOT appear when copying or pasting. It IS damn annoying though! I personally feel that most people won't turn it off because they won't realise that they can. But in saying that most people won't read what it says anyway. (The above is based on experience.)
He's not even right about the improved search. It's still useless to me. All I want to do is search through my Thunderbird e-mails or search for IP addresses on the network. Does Vista do this? NO and if it does search for IP addresses I've got a broken copy because mine doesn't.
I agree - The reckless driving is the problem not how fast you go, per se. Accelerating to 10Mph very quickly and then hitting a child is more dangerous that crusing along at 20Mph and avoiding the child. At the end of the day - speed doesnt kill people - people not driving with due care and attention kill people.
Not to get picky - but shouldn't it be Chief Cracking officer. After all a hacker is a programer. Or have we changed its meaning to be inline with the hype that is the media.
(Sorry for all the spellink mistakes - but its late and I've had too much caffine!)
What the hell???
I use Win XP on my laptop all the time and it crashes.
I have at least one call a month from customers who have rebooting XP (home and pro) becuase of a hardware problem and they mostly loose their data.
I admit to using GNU/Linus on servers - but its for very good reasons - It's more stable.
XP isn't and from what I have seen in Vista - that isn't either.
At least call a spade a spade.
Just to say about point 4 above.
I have broadband internet without a phone line.
In the UK NTL will install broadband 1Mb/sec is 17.99 a month and you dont have to have a landline.
Voip is great for me!
I think every IT support guy will agree.
Users don't care as long as their system is still usable.
The most common reply I get is
"I don't use my PC for Internet banking and so have nothing to loose."
I try the
"If your computer is vulnerable it could be used by organised crime"
But I'm not a salesman for Security, just a repair man.
Don't tell me...you work for Netgear!
Great. Poor you!!!
Now reverse that for almost every US show for us in the UK
Old Hard Drive Platters make great coasters (Drink Mats).
Th ehole in the bottom stops them sticking to the bottom of cups and glasess

the story is here http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/26/wpad_vuln_investigated/
Heh heh, when I ask users what OS they use they generally answer office 2003!
Although some are now slowly realising that this isn't correct and tell me that they run Office 2007
Some days it's just not worth asking!
Don't come to the UK then!

To Quote the post
"It's a great OS, I use, I like it; but the market share it's grabbing is from other Linux users."
I'm running Ubuntu and I got rid of Vista to do it.
For me Ubuntu has replaced my Vista laptop - and I'm very happy about it.
My father bought a new laptop with Vista on it and has also replaced the OS with Ubuntu.
I don't think Ubuntu is replacing other GNU/Linux distros - from my experience it is replacing Vista
I'm proud to have lasted a whole 2 months using Vista until I got sick of all the problems. (That I've posted so many times before)

Err...
I'm using every day on my laptop and it sucks!
The networking bit is terrible.
I set up the network, go to another network, come back and it doesn't connect.
IMHO - XP is much better than Vista.
Oh and I used to be able to search for an IP Address on the network, now I can only search for devises that Vista finds!
I hate Vista
The ONLY good thing is how fast it comes out of sleep!
It's not that much of a selling point
Just to add the UAC prompt does NOT come up all the time and does NOT appear when copying or pasting.

Oh and Apple laptops at that - Oh dear I have watched it too much!
"Its got a 28.8 bps modem"
I every time I see Austrian a part of my brain also shouts out Australian.
Why is that?

I get a nasty feeling that if I use Google(TM) to look for TV clips all I will get is 20 pages of TV ads.
I agree whole heartedly.
I have never bought an Apple product and yet I really want to.
Why is that?
On the flip side I have bought tons of Microsoft stuff and I really don't want to.
Oh well, such is life
What the hell??? I use Win XP on my laptop all the time and it crashes. Dont forget those sys admins that work in Wales (the country not the large ocean mamal) can visit Sys Admin Day - Wales. Yey to us!
