Actually, the Federal government pays out highway subsidies and direct highway expenditures nearly as much as it takes in for gas taxes. Source.

For the states, it depends. In Wisconsin, gas tax pays for all of road expenses. We have slightly higher gas tax than our neighboring states, but we also have IMHO nicer roads.

On the federal level, it's close. Here's a table that shows FHA revenues vs. expenditures.

On the state level, it depends on the state. In Wisconsin we have high gasoline tax, but all of it goes to the roads and thus we have nice roads. In Minnesota all of the gas tax plus more from the general fund goes toward roads, their gas tax is lower so more is paid from the general fund. I don't know about other states.

I got that information from talking to the Charter Communications general manager for my market (La Crosse, WI). I tend to believe him, coaxial is good stuff.

  17. Difference on Limited-Use DVD Technology · · Score: 5, Insightful

The difference between Circuit City's fiasco and this is that divx required a special player which dialed an 800 number to see if you're eligible to play the disk. That part wasn't so horrible. The bad part is that CC wasn't making any money with it so they dropped it and screwed all the people who had paid extra for the specialized players.

These new ideas are entirely different.. they rely on the disc itself to limit how many times you can play it. I, for one, wouldn't mind paying $1-2 for a DVD which allows me to watch a movie a couple times until the coating on the disk makes it unreadable. You only have to read it once to rip it. ;)

  18. Re:Shared bandwidth on Rolling DSL and Wireless Access Out In One Swoop · · Score: 1

True, cable shares the bandwidth between the head end and your house whereas DSL only shares it at the head end. However, most cable can carry ~100-150mbit. It doesn't reall matter if cable is 'shared' because you're never going to fill it. You'll satruate the CO's t1/oc3 much sooner than the cable. If your neighborhood DOES manage to saturate it... wow.
