I'm intrigued by a thought that occurred when reading your post. Do Voyager I and II still count as "satellites" given that they have achieved escape velocity from the solar system?
OK, I'll bite - I read the article you linked to, and found it pretty convincing in a non-astronomer-common-sense sort of way. I'd be genuinely interested to understand what the mistake is if you've got the time to explain? Cheers!
Well geez dudes, how exactly is a post asking folk to mod up the parent because it puts tfa in context off-topic? Redundant maybe (given that the parent is now at +5), but off-topic? Oh wait, this is Slashdot...
A shot of reality-salt to take with the TFA.
Why is it I only ever get mod points when the only comments around involve imagining a beowulf cluster of Soviet Russia overlords making frist posts in all of your base?

Sorry? What? Why does the article author lose credibility for taking the time to answer a question specifically asked here? Is that not what Slashdot is about anymore? Perhaps you might prefer this other site that I'm aware of - it's called Digg.
I note that you characterize the issue as a 'minor personal spat' - I'm not sure how accurate that is if it is resulting in significant fall off in referral traffic.
Having read TFA, I found it to be well written and a useful addition to the literature on the subject (and, yes, IAAL). Even being charitable I find it difficult to see what value your post adds to anyone.
Actually, I think he was signalling his exasperated withdrawal from an argument which had clearly become mired in intransigent 'argument from (supposed) authority' territory. I'm not sure he was trying to 'win' anything.
Whether or not you agree with his premises, he was also being consistent by following through to the logical conclusion of his argument - ie. that carrying guns around for personal protection increases the likelihood of such tragic events occuring.
I'm not sure where sense of perspective comes into it?
Ha ha, reminds me of something that happened at work a couple of months ago. One of our partners was on business in the US. He managed to lose his Blackberry and so our tech support guys in Hong Kong couriered him a couple of new ones. The package got stopped by US customs. When we inquired why it turns out that our tech guy had listed the contents as "Blackberries" and the customs had detained them as an illegal unlicensed food import... doh
Your post is based on the assumption that he could have made the money in his home country. It's actually pretty tricky to set things up (both legally and logistically) so that you can receive and bank foreign exchange in China. Don't forget that the Chinese RMB is not a freely convertible currency.

It made milk come out of my nose...
All so easily overlooked... Fitting too that it was posted anonymously
