There was talk of super-dooper computer languages that would put programmers out of work in the late 80's...and talk of self-repairing hardware...ald talk of management systems that would burp the baby.
Seems that there are more and more people in the data center these days, and the people are higher paid.
They are the only company making excellent computers and they vigorously defend that position. When another company comes up and even comes close to TRYING to compete in this area, what do they do? The blighters go and make even better stuff! They are vicious that way.
I have more than 10 years..started with vax in 79, and moved to unix in '85. worked at mcdonnell douglas, ibm, and several other big names. I think you are a self made man. you are bitter, scarcastic, and pessimistic. you must be a real pleasure to be around. I personally feel that people are smart, and that the "simple" computer os's are NOT easy, and the companies that try to perpetuate how easy they are end up giving the users an inferiority complex. computers are the most complex machines ever released to the general public. microsoft puts a pretty picture on a can of worms and then pushes how easy it is to open. you sit back smug and superior and belittle those that have interests in things other than your interests and then blame them for your inability to help them. shame on you. and shame on you for using such language.
ah, but ms is trying to take over OUR world...hey, you see evil, you bring it down, it's that simple. so, bring em both to their knees! and, no, i'm not joking.
I just got back from the movie and I thought that it was a pretty good escape from reality. I wasn't looking for a bullet proof story line or 5 star acting. I just wanted to be entertained by a fantasy adventure, and I was.
If everyone in the US, while at the poll, flipped a coin, the vote would look a lot like... exactally what it looks like now! SO, the decision of the American public seems to be that it's 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. In a nutshell (to borrow from O'Riley) there isn't any candidate that inspired the majority of the American public to vote against him.
They have California going to Gore...but the popular vote has Bush out in front by about 100K votes! What's up with that? Obviously, assumption plays a BIG part with the pundits observations. My prediction? Bush will win.

The student made a point. The system made a point. Katz wants us to say the system was wrong and the student was right. Why? Because "rights" were at stake? Whos rights? The rights of the student, or the rights of the assembly gathered to observe a time honored activity? There are so many who had rights that were denied because of the actions of others...where did it start?
Bruce's comments get included (and moderated up) 'cause he's Bruce, it seems. That's 'cause this IS Rob's baby and everyone does it his way. I can't ever seem to not be made aware of that. I really don't have any major differences of opinion with Bruce, but I do notice things like this. Which applies to this article nicely, eh?
What if the idiot is right? What if there is an insideous evil lurking just around the corner from all of us...what if this idiot has turned a corner once or twice in his life and seen such an evil? Are we so secure in our understanding of this new technology that we can so easily discount the fear that might eminate from the idiots? Shouldn't we examine our beliefs, and REALLY look at why we refuse to even listen to a different opinion? In fact, isn't that what we claim is the problem...that we aren't being listened to?
Opinions expressed by the author of the main post are not the opinions of this site. That's why this site can't be blamed for the lame "uber stupid" expressions and rants of a prejudiced squid named "scooter". I do wonder, however, how this drivel gets posted. Scooter apparently doesn't have the know-how to shape his opinions to include that the popularity of RH isn't (and couldn't be) just because of the kiddies. I use RH 'cause it was the only distro that "saw" my hardware correctly a couple of years ago, and it still works fine right out of the box. I USE linux, I'm not married to it, and I never criticize my buddy's wife, much less his distro. I DO criticize stupidity, however.
The company can release the distro to satisfy the demands of the customer base to provide timely updates of software. So, they take what they consider the best of what's available and release it after what must be an un-Godly amount of work. So, upgrade if you want. Wait for 7.x if you want. In fact, with the info I've gleaned here, because the compatibility of binary code is touted as being manditory, Redhat has the opportunity to release a 8.0 when KDE, XF86, and the gcc compiler group have things that are ready for the public consumption that they claim they desire.
pointy haired bosses need some illisoin of continuity when they invest their infrastructure to a operating system. It gives them a warm and fuzzy and brings Linux places where it couldn't go on it's own, except through the back door. When in Rome, you gotta wear a toga.
RedHat's not saying this, RedHat's marketing is. And since I know about 2 cents worth about marketing even though my company does it, I know enough to see it, apreciate the work it takes to differentiate my company using it, and relalize that my company needs it to be able to pay my wage, I keep my stupid opinions to myself...except for here at slashmouth
You know, I keep a lot of old junk around (I can say this when my wife isn't listening!) and "make" stuff with it, or fix stuff, whatever. If I need a resistor, capacitor, whatever, I just look first in my "good" parts bin, then in my "junk" pile, then in a store (and a good store is getting harder to find all the time) so I don't see how people can tell me what to do with all the stuff I collect, define to me when it's offically "junk" and I can literally "hack" into it, etc.
It's MY 2 cents, after all!
I administered a.cc. domain, and in addition to the stupid long naming convention..."domain.cc.state.us" tacked on to the host identifier...I found that the DNS servers I implemented couldn't be the source for any other DNS tier...we had to get another domain name to do DNS services for some not-for-profit's we let co-locate at the college. What a crock! When you register, they ask for the IP of the DNS servers, so what the heck! I suppose it's a way to bilk another registration fee out of people. As I see it (correct me if I'm wrong), there can't be a technical reason. Oh well, I got over it.
You or someone you hire will have to know what's what to keep on top of the ball. No if's, and's or but's. That's why top system integrators get the big bucks. Their motto: "Know the answer before the customer asks the question."
I thought that security by obscurity was a closed source methodology. What I want is a technology that ensures that no transaction that I make can be spoofed by someone else. If you're a porn addict, you gotta get your fix using your bandwidth, not the bandwidth payed for by others. If you're parinoid, just don't do things that would attract attention. They can't read your mind...yet. 8O

"It's hard to recall any industry which has so abused, neglected and exploited its customers and survived."
Try the automotive industry. When cars first came out, you had to hand crank the engine - sometimes resulting in backfire and broken arm!
I read the post and thought to myself (before looking at the authors name) "God, what a pompus ass"! Lo and behold...

It was Kasparov vs. IBMs' SP2 that inspired me to take a position managing a SP2. I hope that he's had as rewarding an experience as I have had.
