It's easy to make a car analogy that sounds right, so you get modded up. Then the guy that actually understands how digital technology works can correct you and then HE gets modded up. If a good metaphor was used, only one guy would get modded up. It's a win-win!
Bringing a dump truck to a restaurant and maxing out a connection are not equal in the metaphorical sense. The key difference is you do not need to do anything out-of-the-norm like buy a server rack in order to do that to a connection.
In short, you'd be right if you had to acquire several thousand dollars worth of equipment to abuse it.
I just wish you Android fanboys could recognize that some people prefer the iphone for completely logical reasons.
What kills me is they bitch about all the Apple news, then they go into threads completely unrelated to the iPhone and crack jokes about it. It's like they think they're immune to being fanboys because it's not Apple. Even more amazingly, they think other fanboys aren't gonna come out of the woodwork.
I'm fucking tired of it. "NASA successfully tests the first Warp Drive!" "But Steve Jobs said we're holding the speed of light wrong, giggle giggle snort."
One could make the argument that going out of your way to avoid adding to the public domain is a form of 'stealing' from it. I'm unclear if that was his point or not, but it's a valid complaint.
"Nefarious company X STOLE that BSD code!" Well, guess what... that was the intent behind the license.
No, it wasn't, for a similar reason to what I wrote above.
Birds show a lot of advanced mental cognitive behavior in relation to socialization that isn't commonly seen throughout the rest of the animal kingdom.
Here's a behavior that isn't commonly seen! Were you surprised?
See! That was proper use of modding! Now crawl up the thread and get the other people who were off-topic, too! Unless you were using off-topic to say you disagree...
Seconded. I use a portable version of it found at portableapps.com. We've found that to be friendly at places that don't let you have admin access to your machine for things like installs.
"A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one." -- Fight Club.

Oxygen fuel and water aren't critical?
The fuck?
Meaning they still have plenty.
I would have thought Slashdot's 'submit' button would have been the one most clicked in Firefox.
Why is it always cars for the analogies?

bleh, um, I misclicked and posted my reply to the wrong post. Curse my touchscreen phone.
Just avoid holding it that way!

Yeah, like the time you gave them $40/month and all you got was an unlimited internet connection, just like they promised? The audacity of those guys!
Has anybody else noticed that a lot of posts on Slashdot are made with absolutely no memory of events more than 4 months old?

You can't steal from the public domain.

Liability, ie paying money or going to jail has pretty much been the way to make people do the right thing for quite a while.
It was a bunch of lawsuits against file sharers that made iTunes successful, right?
Yes.
Flamebait? Really?! Are you suggesting that iPhone fans won't get noisy when Apple gets bashed in threads that have nothing to do with it?
And then you guys complain about noisy fanboys.
How is Apple an "abuser" of open technology?
Because... because... uh... Slashdot keeps posting stories about how they reject apps!
please everybody to get this correct in the future.
Yeah, you're making your posts really difficult for the extra smart people to read!
Just because there was no lawsuit for a completely different product does not mean this one is baseless or unfair.
No, it just means that it's probably blown way out of proportion.

It looked good, so I bought it. I bought it so it must be good. *rocks back and forth tearfully clutching ipad*
I wonder how many Linux users feel that way.
"This was a bitch to set up! But... it has more power for setting things up!"

Mods might be handing out "Insightful" mods for the karma boost.
I wish they'd stop and go back to modding correctly. That useless karma boost changes the tone of the post.
My wife forgot to lock our house door one night and we were burglarized. By your logic, we deserved that.
I think for his logic to be interpreted correctly, you only deserved it if you left your house unlocked all the time.
The new iPad with cum in your rentina display, with 64GB of gay porn, from Steve "oh Jeez" Jobs.
Actually you'd have a lot better luck getting gay porn on an Android phone.

C) I'd have to wait for an invite?
It's still in development.
