  3. Re:Zimbra on IBM's Inexpensive Notes/Domino Push Against MS · · Score: 0

I don't know if you have installed Zimbra or not, but the install could not be much easier! There are less than 10 dependencies that the installer does not provide for you, and as long as you have worked on email before, you can have a Zimbra server up and running in about 10 minutes. I own a company who does Zimbra hosting, we are grid computing based, so we build one appliance, and just copy it when someone needs a new server setup. Try that with M$ Exchange.

Funny...I have a CS Degree, I got it when my father was in the US Navy, from Sydney Australia. I am NOT from Australia, so obviously I get some rather Odd looks from folks. The School I went to was not known for CS, but more for Farming tech and such! In the end, it will really only matter if you want to get on with one of the Big 5 consulting firms, they place a lot of weight on where you went to school, I personally have never wanted to work for one of them tho, as they are more of a sweat shop than real consulting shops. That is my opinion, and I stand by it. :o)

  9. Re:Help Desk... on Practical Experience As a Beginning Programmer? · · Score: 0

Part of the reason you could only get a help desk job is because you did not show the commitment to complete a 4 year degree. I am not trying to be evil, but I hire programmers and other tech types, and a 2 year degree generally gets your resume' tossed into the "emergency help desk tech" pile.

  10. I use it... on Is Parallelism the New New Thing? · · Score: 0

I am currently working with a company called 3Tera. We are delivering some web based applications as well as some apps we need to be able to scale up and down extreamly fast. I have managed to be able to build an email server in about 30 minutes. Not to mention that if you have questions, their support folks make you feel like you are paying for an entire data center with their fast and professional responses. I for one welcome our new Grid overlords! :o)

  11. Regardless on Is Parallelism the New New Thing? · · Score: 0

Of whether you call it Grid computing, Cloud computing, Parallelism or a whatever, it is making it cheaper to bring software (web based) to market. Instead of purchasing 20 servers and having 10 sit idle while I hope that someone buys my super web thingy, I can boot one grid instance and when and if my thingy starts selling, I can boot 10 more servers up in less than 30 minutes. Then I can add and subtract servers on an as needed basis if I have massive traffic, or if I drop down to only hundreds of hits after the initial hype wears off. It really is nice to see it coming to the web.
