When we lived in Maryland in 2006, we had one of the earlier FIOS installations. The 'outside box' had three cables going into the house: Cat3 (or something like that) for phone, Cat5 for data and coax for TV. I think they've gone through a few generations of equipment since then, but I'd consider our configuration true FTTH.

Depends which iPad you're comparing to. The Surface's display seems to more like the iPad2's, which is $499 for a 32GB. In other specs, which may or may not matter, the Surface may be better. Pardon the pun, but it's hard to compare apples to apples here:)
That's exactly what we do. I drive a Nissan Leaf for my 10 mile commute and weekend errands. We have a minivan for everything else. I've been doing this for a year, and couldn't be happier (about this topic, anyway).

I've worked with a lot of chip companies over the years, and Broadcom is one of the worst when it comes to availability of collateral like datasheets and programmer manuals. To have access to anything beyond a marketing summary requires an NDA, and even then you only have access to a tiny list of things through one of the worst portals you've ever seen. As you've noted, there quite often isn't anything remarkable, but for some reason they feel it's important to lock it down. Contrast with a company like Freescale that makes all of their SoC datasheets available to anyone with a browser.

Well, in this case Amazon has pretty serious operations in California, outside of the sales affiliates. As TFA states, A9 is based in Palo Alto, and Lab126 (where Kindles are designed) is down the block from Apple in Cupertino.
What energy are you going to sell back? Does the Volt come with a solar pack or something? Also, the concept of 'off-peak' power requires meters that distinguish time of day. Most of the ones out there just spin mindlessly and tally up total kWh
