Excellent point! Perhaps one of the most interesting posts I've read on slashdot in years, and I am not being sarcastic. I think a lot of success in life can be attributed to one's ability to see inside others' minds based on what they say and do, and your post is a great example of that.
It's a violation of ** US ** Copyright law. Antigua and the WTO can't say what is or is not a violation of US law. They are not "official sanctioners" of US law.
It's not legally brilliant. It's obvious. The WTO has set procedures when one party claims a violation, and those procedures explicitly allow for this request. He would have been guilty of malpractice and complete incompetence if he had not done this.
He did consider that. His point was that precisely because of what you're saying, people will run a file that's supposed to be Pinch, even if they see a virus warning. Therefore, it would make sense for people who want to create a botfarm to make a virus with Pinch, and then throw it up as a torrent and say it IS pinch. Get it?
That can't be true. The expo is over on July 19, and the offer is slated to run beginning July 22. They are just going to announce the offer at the expo.
... the wrist strap broke and caused the remote to leave the user's hand.
Bullshit. The WRIST STRAP did not cause the remote to leave the user's hand. And the "wrist strap breaking" did not cause the remote to leave the user's hand, either. The breaking of the wrist strap may have been one "but for" cause of the remote leaving the user's hand, but something being a "but for" cause is not enough to establish liability.
Guys, a lot of society's choices involve balancing protection of the less-sophisticated, less-knowledgable members' interests with general laissez-faire values. I am a bit surprised to see a place as liberal as Slashdot brimming with such fervent dispassion for what, in essence, is a claim for protection of someone who just might be a little less sophisticated than general members of society.
So, if I get this straight, your basic argument is "because something is a certain way right now, there's no way that will ever change." That is pretty clearly foolish. Just because "people are still heading towards Google to make cool products," this is no way means that this will continue.
This happens all the time, in every industry. Private equity firms buy public companies at a premium, take them private, shake things up, and sell them to someone else or take them public again. They are betting that they can do better with the company than current management, or chop the company up into smaller parts or put it together with other companies, to unlock value.
This is just a tiny stretch. Mitt founded Bain but he doesn't have any control of the organization now. He is not even a member of the firm at this point. Not to mention Bain is only one of a number of private equity firms in the consortium that's purchasing Clear Channel.
What I've always found amusing is that CNN's "Airport Network" is really just CNN edited to not show any breaking airline disaster / hijacking etc. news. The end up subbing in entertainment, sports, and weather whenever there is breaking air-related bad news on CNN.

I always assumed that Engadget and Gizmodo did not have any stake in the success of the products they were writing-up, or did not receive any direct financial benefit from the company whose product it was promoting. I understand that they receive free "tester" versions of the products that they review or promote, but was not aware of any cash or other payment to them in exchange for featuring a product.
From the site: "Three Speech isn't part of PlayStation, but it does get to speak to PlayStation. You could say we're 'semi official'."
Note that they say they're not a part of PlayStation, rather than not a part of Sony. They could easily be produced by a Sony affiliate or subsidary that is not linked to the arm of Sony that directly produces PlayStation products.
Does Wiki show us "how humanity understands itself at any precise moment in time"?
Or does it show us how wealthy people with plenty of time on their hands understand humanity at any precise moment in time? Not to suggest that most forms of archeology have come any closer to providing a "humanity's eye view," just that Wiki's editors are far from a representative sample of humanity.
Too bad there are no windows binaries. I use GIMP on Windows, as I won't pirate Photoshop.

Yes, this is in line with Terrence McKenna's theory that there aren't individual species on earth -- instead, there is a "gene swarm" going on.
If you're high right now, I bet you'd love Terrence McKenna. Youtube for his DMT videos and other stuff.
You are assuming what is the point of much contention among modern legal scholars of intellectual property law. Many strongly disagree with you.

Guys,
It's okay. This is Web 2.0 and stuff doesn't have to make sense any more.

Satellite radio is subscription based, but increasingly also carries advertisements. Kind of like cable TV.
Um, yes. Exactly.
It's like "util" -- the economics/philosophy term... but closer to "Yahoo". Get it?

Was it translated into newspeak?
"Why is that ugly? Seems like capitalism at its finest." Since when are "capitalism at its finest" and "ugly" mutually exclusive?
