To this day, Microsoft is trying to shake down smartphone vendors using Android for 15 bux per phone "protection" against patent extortion^W lawsuits.

What patents, you ask? Well, we don't know.

I found the list and posted it to Slashdot on one of the recent Microsoft vs Motorola stores. It was modded up to +5.

To this day, nobody has a list of those 235 patents that Microsoft owns and that Linux supposedly infringes - hidden behind a wall of NDAs.

The source for that is known, too. Basically Ballmer was misrepresenting the results of a study:

For the same reason why I'm not legally allowed to go to a library and scan a whole book. If Google actually paid for every book they scanned and presented, they'd have a better argument. Instead, they copied a bunch of books whole from libraries.

There were some other hacks that were more justifiable, such as HBGary, and probably this hack as well, but these guys aren't a bunch of saints fighting the good fight, especially considering their 4chan roots and doing it for the "lulz".

At the same time, there is considerable overlap between these group scores, and individuals of each group can be found at all points on the IQ spectrum. Similar findings have been reported for related populations around the world, although these studies are generally considered less reliable due to the relative paucity of test data and the difficulties inherent in the cross-cultural comparison of intelligence test scores. In general, games are designed to function without a manual. Why? Because a lot of people don't bother reading the manual - so game developers get better sales with an easy-to-learn game that requires no manual reading.

Just to add to this, what changed was that developers got a clue and made learning how to play part of the game. It's pretty much standard for games now that the opening levels are a tutorial.

It wasn't that people just didn't read the manuals, it's that even if they did, it's much more fun to be taught in-game.

They both sell copyrightable products that take millions of dollars to make. You can rent both, and you can sell used copies of both. It was initially claimed that rentals would destroy the industry, as "hlavac" was claiming "Keep that up, and soon nobody will create anything anymore." with regards to used games.

Your complaint to the previous poster was that books don't cost tens of millions to make. Now you are complaining because... well I don't know, you didn't say exactly what difference ruins the analogy.
