    I've been saying this for a while. X has always been a complete pain in the ass for desktop users. It completely invalidates any arguments that Linux is fater than Windows. Sure, command line Linux is faster than Windows, but then so is DOS!

    Children of Dune was pretty good, IMHO. But, I didn't read the books (I can't stand how long-winded Herbert is, but that's me), however.

    Riverworld does look very interesting. I'll be giving that a viewing.

    Why would SciFi want to soil itself with Enterprise? If they are going to show Trek, they should at least show the good series, say, TOS, or Deep Space 9, or seasons 4-7 of TNG. But not Enterprise!

    So Sayeth the US Constitutuin:

    Where is the Congressional declaration of war? Without that, this "war" is illegal. Not that that stopped us from fighting wars on Grenada, Panama, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq (twice), or anywhere else we decided to go towar with since the end of WWII.

    And with all that the poor bastard hauling all that shiny high-tech kit around gets paid so little that his wife and kids often have to resort to food stamps to eat. Then there is the goverment disemboweling the Veterans Administration and continiously lowering a soldier's veteran's benefits and constantly trying to weasel out of covering the after-effects of wartime injuries.

    Oh, yes, we treat our Boys and Girls in Green/Blue like they are rare and precious diamonds.

    Iraq is a battle wo don't even have to fight. The "war" isn't about Saddam or teh governemtn of Iraq. It's about the oil. The oil that will pour billions of dollars into the pockets of a select few friends of GW Bush. The rest is smokesscreens and mirrors.

    If we were all high and mighty about dangerous and unsavory governments we'd be invading quite a few African nations that are in the middle of genocidal spasms as well as number of other foul and repressive countries. But we're not. We're attacking an oil rich nation with a destroyed infastructure and a decimated army.

    Agreed. SMTP is simply not up to the task any more. A new protocol needs to be implemented. The problem, of course, is getting it out into teh field. You'd need to force everyone to upgrade. This would mean upgrading the software on every server and in every client. I don't even know if this is possible. SMTP is too deeply entrenched in too many systems.

    It's possible that some government fiat could ram this new standard down everyone's throats, but I don't think anyone would be happy with that.

    The first large-scale spam was the infamous "Green Card" Usenet spam from the Cantner and Seigel (sp?) "Law Firm" way back in late 1993 or early 1994. The outcry was deafening. They got tossed off of every ISP they could find and were harrassed for weeks, possibly months.

    Now I wade through mountains of spam in my favorite Usenet groups (spam is still being sent to dead newsgroups like alt.ensign.wesley.die.die.die for Pete's sake!) and don't even bother trying to get the bastards knocked off their ISPs. Sigh.

    I have to wonder if the USian labor force isn't partly to blame by pricing themselves out of the market.

    IT worker's setting rates too high? I earn what my employer is willing to pay me. That's teh case for most non-union workers. You take the best paying job you can get, but ultimately it is teh employer who sets the wage you will earn.

    I suppose you'll tell me it's my fault that someone broke into my locked garage and stole some of my possessions.

    Reboot was a very good show. The animation was pretty close to the cutting edge when it was produced and the writing was very well done. It was a very good children's show.
