  1. PS brained... on Beginning GIMP · · Score: 1

Here is a good reason why the GIMP is not going to replace photoshop for serious designers. Because we are technicaly minded artists. We think defferent and photoshop is perfect no matter what OS or look. Some people just pick up linux. No sweat. They see it, they get it, they do it. It's as natual as can be for them. Others see a painfully unducumented nightmare, they know would work if they just knew the little quarks and tricks, but they dont. So no switching for them. Same with PS vs GIMP. I know every little inch of photoshop, its built to go effortlessly from hi-end print to web design, and its advanced features blow away GIMP. Now, I am a BIG supporter of OS movement, but GIMP is not a contender, but it IS a viable solution for millions of people who want to do basic photo manipulation with a strong set of tools. GIMP wont be unlocking any creative brained designers anytime soon, besides there are whole industries built on adobe systems, and those arn't going away anytime soon.

  5. Maybe we are looking at this wrong... on The NSA Knows Who You've Called · · Score: 1

You know, we live in a day and age where I would not be surprised if the NSA was found to be doing this, and even more shockingly was found to be within legal bounds as well.

I would also not be surprised if this was nothing more than a miss-inforation ploy. That's right. The NSA may not really be logging all those call times and numbers.

I don't think they have the data mining structure to process anything except for info on people they are watching. Besides, this info has always be stored. Don't be so naive, they can always just ask a judge for the call records... Heck just about anybody or agency can get this info.

now here me out, I am a huge fan of personal freedom and I stand in favor of every move for keeping our freedom, and in opposition of any attempt to take it from us, but lets be realistic here. This is nothing new, and if it was your job to be a spy agency for the us, you would not find it so intrusive.

That said, we do need to wake up as a nation to the reality that we are in a more and more policed state and we need to pay attention, in that our personal rights and freedoms are being chipped away at. But, we also need to see political propaganda for what it is. This is not a bone shattering discovery... This is just a drop in a very large bucket. A bucket that doesn't exist of course, but none the less a bucket.

  6. missing the point.. on Resident Evil, Game On With Wii · · Score: 1

I think allot of people are missing a good point about the wii...

While it may not capture the hard core fans fancy right away, trust me when I say, this is going to open doors never even thought of before. In the realm of video games we have seen a pretty linier evolution in each new breed of systems that arrive, and i think the wii has the opportunity to change the way traditional game developers think about designing the next big hit.

Games have become allot like hollywood. Allot of crap. Every once in a while a movie comes out and wows people, but mostly junk. Also like any other entertainment industry, peoples likes and dislikes will vary tremendously.

However, by creating a next gen console with the motion sensing ability, you give developers new ways to interact within games and that will spawn innovation. It's the same thing as if hollywood created a new genre of film. Some people will never like it, and it may not be wholly executed at first, but the groundwork is there.

So, while some games may come as substandard right off the bat, be assured people will put the wii to good use. I think mostly though, its the idea of the wii that is exiting news for the gaming world, more so than its actual gamepay. Yes poor titles could harm an otherwise good release, but I think the hype is already snowballed to fast too far. It WILL be big.

The question is, what will we do with it next? Or even better, what new advances will this lead to? i anxiously await :-)

And as games get more and more visualy apealing, they will be more fun to watch. Although I admit the core group of people tuning in will be other gamers, or at least those who aspire too. TONS of people game, few get 10,000 for thier skill. People want to compete and get better, so they play against others who wipe them up, and they will most likely watch to learn and enjoy.

As for me I am just as competitive when it comes down to old school nintindo... And fragging people all over BF2 or Halo is just as fun as running and tackling somebody. (well almost) - SO hey, face it Gaming is going to be bigger and bigger, and TV is a part of that. I expect online video and stuff like that to realy boom with this stuff though. Sure, it’s bad timing for this right after such criticism over their video offering and AOL (speak of the devil.) And yes I am sure there is allot of financial pressure to bend here and there, especially after there extreme growth in the last few years. But overall, it is still to be seen how far they will go for the almighty dollar.

There will be those who have already had their last hopes of a virgin corporation rising to greatdom dashed away, and for fewer there never was a chance anyway. But there are still the masses of google users who know nothing of "Do no evil" and will search on blindly. And finally there are those like me, that realize that there is still a thread of hope, and are trusting that their newfound gumption will not lead up to disaster, and that we can really still trust them even though they grow and gather more and more personal data...

I think google has become an icon of more than the "American way" and grown into the way of the net. Young and old, geeks and newbs, hackers and slackers... We all depend on google to remain rock steady. Its almost an cult icon of all that is freedom. And if the United Internet of Google falls, millions will turn cynical and hard hearted.
