Gee thanks, after all those thousands of cpu-hours my machines spent simulating proteins interacting, they can apparently now just look at the damn thing and record the results.
Yeah. I, too, was rather dissapointed when videos replaced ascii porn.
Only pro-Western dissidents ever win, NEVER anti-Western dissidents or even those who might be construed as opposed to Western governments (ala Wikileaks).
Yeah, I know. I'm still disappointed that they turned down my previous nominations of Fidel Castro and Kim Jong Il. This year I'm gonna nominate Osama Bin Laden - another truly heroic "Anti-Western-Dissident" - but those damn Swedes will probably just ignore me again.
Also, remember, wikileaks is "non-partisan" and "objective". Don't make the mistake of labelling them as anti-western-dissidents, comrade.
I don't understand how on earth you can give a peace prize to someone who supports war.
Yeah, a lot of people seem to be under the impression that anything they can't automatically understand must necessarily be wrong. It's called a "god-of-the-gaps" fallacy.
Do you really think you are going to get a malware author to comment on why they don't write viruses for Macs?
Sure: back when, as a bored teenager, I used to write "malware", I targeted Windows because:
1. I couldn't afford to buy a Mac even if I wanted to, so trying to write malware for one would have been somewhat difficult. 2. Any time I did a random port-scan, I'd get 10,000 windows PC's for every Mac. 3. People who inquired about paying for my services NEVER asked about software for the Mac OS.
I might be exaggerating a bit with #2, but you get the gist. I know macs accounted for maybe 5% of the overall market at that point, but they were under-represented online because a lot of the systems that were connected 24/7 were corporate and school computers, and macs were a much lower portion of THAT market.
Granted I was never some 3v1l h4x0r hammering away assembly code in a dark basement with a green monochrome CRT, but given that most vulnerabilities tend to be exploited by curious amateurs with an intermediate understanding of computers I'd say my reasoning was quite common amongst self-styled "hackers" and script-kiddies. You can try and find some "l33t" guy to see what he thinks, but I have a feeling you'd get the same answer. Macs aren't worth going for unless you're looking to do a targeted attack against a specific individual or organization; if you're looking to build a bot-net or just gain notoriety, you go after whatever has the biggest market share.
That said, with the current growth in the mobile market, if I were still interested in such activities (and not worried about going to jail for a long, long time) I'd probably set my sights on iPhones and Android devices. People store a hell of a lot of personal data on them, and, from what I understand, their security is pretty abysmal. Now that 3g and WiFi are pretty much standard on phones, I think we'll see more and more malware for those platforms.
Most of those guys end up blowing 99% of that on women, drugs, and vehicles. I knew a few guys who worked the rigs - 3 years after getting there, they all had brand new pickup trucks and a coke habit, and were just as broke as when they got there.
No, "some did it somewhere" is not an answer to what he said. The few that managed it had two things in common - they were primitive as hell, and they'd already suffered some sort of environmental devastation. If you find that to be a desirable state of affairs, gather yourself a likeminded group of fanatics and pitch in to buy an island. You can be as "sustainable" as you like - if you don't kill yourselves off within the first decade, I might even come visit. I'll bring some tupperware to replace your guano bowls.
As for the rest of us ⦠we have no desire to throw away thousands of years of societal and technological discovery. We're going to keep moving forward, ripping away the shroud of ignorance, fanning the flames of discovery, and shining our ever-strengthening light into the darkness. If you want to hang on to your delusions about the "harmonious lives" of our ancestors, you go right ahead; bitch and whine and moan all you like, just stay the fuck out of our way.
Great - another over-"educated" moron. No, being opposed to the mainstream does not make you "cool". No, trying to redefine the language does not make you smart. Sit down, shut up, pay attention, and maybe you'll learn something.
when you have cut down the last tree and poisoned the last river... etc... only then will you realise that you cannot eat money.
When you have knocked down the last skyscraper, and destroyed the last lightbulb... only then will you realize that shivering in a cold, dark cave, really, rally sucks.
I wonder how much of the increased shelf life is due to the increase in Apple switchers?
An insignificant amount. Given that apple uses the same damn hardware these days, your fanboi-story is worse than most. I've never gotten rid of a laptop after 12 months - if you're ditching them that often, you simply have too much money, or too little common sense.
Cars don't really go obsolete that quickly. What sense is there in buying new cars all the time?
In a word, "reliability". 5 years will put the average car at 100,000 - 150,000 km. By that point, you're guaranteed to need increased maintenance and more frequent repairs. Some major components are getting close to the failing point. The vehicle starts to be a bigger investment in terms of time and money. It's the same reason why police departments and other government agencies tend to sell off their vehicles around this time.
Personally, I don't care - my vehicle is almost 5 years old at this point, and I plan on keeping it for another 5 unless something extreme happens. But I have the time and the inclination to work on it myself, so it's not a drain on me. Your average soccer-mom, or her doctor, dentist, and lawyer, might feel a bit differently.
I find it remarkable how they expect people to keep buying and buying.
I find it remarkable that you would find this remarkable. It's been the case since man first developed the idea of barter - why should it magically change now? How could it change now?
Just because technology gets older does not always make it obsolete, although electronic manufacturers try very hard to make it so.
Yeah, my mother kept saying that every time I offered to get rid of her old 30" CRT TV and replace it with a nice new LCD display. She finally caved 2 months ago, and now she can't stop raving about all the benefits of the new TV. Her old one may not have been "obsolete", but there were plenty of great reasons to replace it.
Well in the north, they're 100% efficient. They give light, and radiate heat. I've actually seen my energy costs go up by about 10% when I switched to them.
Pure bullshit. Unless by "north" you mean "the arctic circle" in which case you might have a point. Even there, though, electricity is a shitty way to provide heat, and dumping it into your ceiling is wasteful unless you have 99% perfect insulation.
This isn't counting the CFL's I didn't used in my reading lamps and so on. I gave them a shot, I really did. I got tired of the flicker and migraines the bloody things gave me.
Sure. And some people "get" headaches from WiFi signals. Do a double-blind experiment, or point to one that shows the effect, and then we'll talk.
I'm not sure that I agree with the idea of a "carbon tax" either, but we've already given the government the power to limit the ability of individuals to pollute, and that I DO agree with. So, we have two alternatives:
1. The government outlaws certain types of pollutants entirely (eg. sulphur, NO2, etc). 2. The government taxes companies based on how much of these pollutants they emit.
The first option is extremely problematic since it would wipe out entire industries overnight. The second option encourages companies to gradually lower harmful byproducts, while providing funds which can be invested in cleaner technologies or in cleaning up the environment. Of course, the third alternative is to just let everyone pollute as much as they want; if that's the approach you're advocating, I don't think we'll ever agree.
Has this Manning fellow been tried and convicted of treason? If not, declaring him a traitor could be considered libelous or slanderous.
No, it couldn't. Libel and slander require conscious lying, not just a mistaken or unproven belief. Bradley Manning IS a traitor, regardless of what stage of the legal process he's going through.
Calm down, silly. They're not my tax dollars, and I was making a joke. I have no idea how good the service is, nor do I care - I'm just here enjoying the circus.
Incorrect. I was able to get custody of my daughter in my divorce. It cost me nearly $60,000 in lawyers fees to do it, and a lawsuit against the friend of the court, but I did it.
Congrats. I'm glad things worked out for you. Don't make the mistake of thinking that your case is common.
Money buys judicial outcome. Nothing else matters in a court of law.
These people would beg to disagree. Reguardless, even if it were true, it has nothing to do with what I said.
Perhaps... but if you had a photographic memory, don't you think you'd have better things to do with your time than bore yourself with memory contests?
This reminds me of the standard response to the JREFs million-dollar challenge: "Well, real psychics don't NEED your million dollars!".
That's no syphilis ...

Truly dedicated MMO players don't seem to concern themselves with bodily functions, or where they even occur

They are people trained to kill efficiently. And when they are deployed somewhere, it's much more often to kill people than, say, to pet stray dogs.
In WW2, maybe. In current conflicts, we quite literally spend more time petting stray dogs than we do killing people.
