All it proves is that there's almost no resemblance between the federal NDP in Canada and the provincial NDPs. Furthermore, there's almost no resemblance between the NDP in one province and the NDP in another. The federal NDP are a bunch of whiny clowns, ahem "the conscience of the country". No one in Canada wants them to have power, but they're fun to keep around--kind of like an annoying cross between a court jester and NPR. The NDP in BC (where I live now) were a bunch of corrupt thieves, until their leader resigned in scandal (par for the course for BC premiers!) and they got thrown out on their sorry asses (they're down to 1 seat in the legislature). The NDP in Saskatchewan (where I grew up) were actually fiscally responsible (!) and the responsible party to vote for (!!), in stark comparison to the crooks who ran the supposed conservative party (I forget what they're called now). Of course, Saskatchewan is gerrymandered so that farmers' votes are worth more than city-dwellers' votes, and the political split is NDP city, right-wing farmers. (Yes, this is ironic, much like the situation in the US where the Democrats are more fiscally responsible than the Republicans.)
Same here:-( It's almost a 20% pay cut now compared to the beginning of the year! There should be a "I miss the 1 USD = 1.6 CAD exchange rate" support group:-)
If you think your keyboard choice makes you a geek:
I use a modified Dvorak layout with the fabulous Kinesis keyboard. I say modified since I have remapped the Ctrl key to be where the Kinesis puts its backspace key, the Esc key to where Kinesis puts the delete key (both of these changes are for emacs, of course--it's nice to have ctrl and esc available w/o moving your hands:-), the backspace to the caps lock, moved the caps lock to one of the Alt keys and the delete to one of the ctrl keys.
The brushfire stories have been on the national news in Canada as well. Although you are alone in dealing with them of course, you aren't ignored--not like that's any consolation though:-(
I know one major application that uses SWT: Eclipse:-)
(Note: I prefer IntelliJ IDEA in terms of Java IDEs, but Eclipse is #2 on my list and it most certainly is a significant application. Probably the reason you haven't seen other apps using SWT yet is that the documentation (tutorial-style documentation, not just javadoc) isn't there yet, Eclipse is a bit unstable still and also (primarily!) the fact that SWT is quite new and it takes time to build major apps...)
Civilization 3 can only look so good, there's not much else that can be improved about it.
Civ3 looks good, but there's a lot that can be improved about it. That's why there have been so many patches needed. And the multiplayer expansion, so they can sell you the same game (ahem, what it should have been) twice. And the sad thing is I'll happily buy it twice...
I have a G2 also and they kick ass. 4 megapixels is more than enough if you're an amateur. And the different modes, especially the stitch assist helper mode, let you produce some great results...
I agree--and the best thing I ever did was to permanently substitute 1.5 L bottles of water for cigarettes and Diet Coke:-)
I'm sure that Freudians could come up with fun theories about why people, myself included, need to do this. However, I'd say it's simply because of the simple need to do something--since so many of us now have jobs where we just sit on our asses all day writing code and reading/. instead of actually getting the fuck up and moving around...
So this means that IBM's market cap is a little over half of MSFT's (which is 328.3B). And IBM's P/E is 23.91 whereas MSFT's is 55.33. So basically MSFT has a little less than twice IBM's market cap, and about 2.5 times the P/E.

The genius of Darwin was in recognizing that the ones who survive, by definition, are the fittest, and vice-versa.
Out of respect for Darwin...
Since "fittest" is simply defined as "most likely to survive", "survival of the fittest" in this formulation becomes merely "survival of those who are most likely to survive" which is a tautology--not science.
Don't get me wrong, evolution IS science--but the "survival of the fittest" crap isn't the emphasis of Darwin but is the rhetoric used by some of the "thinkers" of the time (Spencer? I forget) to advocate some rather shaky political/eugenic ideas. It is more appropriate to talk about "natural selection"...
I agree. I have a double major in CS and Psychology (I didn't bother doing the extra semester to get two seperate degrees), and doing a different major or degree as well is good advice as far as I'm concerned.
There are things I love about both CS and Psychology (I went into CS from Psychology with the idea of doing graduate work in cognitive science), and there is bullshit unique to both CS and Psychology. And you'll find that you meet totally different kinds of people if you do two degrees from different faculties.
Then, when you're done, if you're still as passionate about the non-CS degree as when you went in you can go to grad school and find that having the ability to write code probably really helps, or you can become a software developer and pay off your student debt and then decide whether you want to go back to graduate work in either field or in some other unrelated field...
Right on! I bought an Aeron C size, but the damn thing wobbled side-to-side a bit, which was REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING. (I think it's only the C ones that did that, but my legs were too long for a B--and my big fat ass didn't fit!:-)
So I returned it and bought a Freedom chair (the one with the headrest, it kicks ass) from the nearest place in the bay area I could find. It makes the Aeron look cheap (it's more than $1000 USD with the headrest), but it's just amazing. I was in a car accident a year ago and after it I was having problems sitting and coding for hours and hours on end, but with this chair (and chiropractic:-) I can do that again happily.
I know that spending more than $1000 USD for a chair (which is more than $1500 CAD, so it seemed even worse for me since I'm Canadian, eh) seems insane, but think of how many hours you spend in your office chair, and then think of how many hours you spend in your car (even with a long commute). So which do you think you get more benefit out of having extra comfort with?
If anyone here is thinking of buying an Aeron, at least sit in a Freedom chair first...
No, it will be harder. MS actually cares about their PR image somewhat (to the masses, not the/. crowd) and if mainstream media (NYT, WSJ) get pissed about something and rant in their op-ed pages, MS listens. Some two-bit con artists might not care. No matter what you say about MS, they're NOT two-bit...
When cars and airplanes are USED CORRECTLY the end result is not (barring freak accidents or accidents from other people not using the product correctly) death.
When cigarettes are used correctly, the end result is quite often death.
Let's play a game: Which one of these three things doesn't belong?
(Alcohol is tougher to judge, since it does cause health problems among addicts. However, as an ex-smoker who is a "social drinker" I can vouch for how much more addictive nicotine is than alcohol. Of course, if you're not fortunate enough to have good genetic "tolerance" for alcohol that's another, tragic, story.)
But you're probably just trolling, so I won't spell it out for you anymore. Connect the dots...
But WFC and other J++ things were for Java, not MSIL. The question is whether/when (maybe it's happened already; I haven't been following closely) there will be the WFC equivalent for.NET...

I'm off to explore XML more fully. There's probably yet-another O'Reilly book in my future...
Unfortunately (except for O'Reilly!), since it's XML, there's more like 10 in your near future...

But if they disable onunload, aren't you screwed then if you're relying on it working? Surely there must be a more robust way?

You certainly didn't read a good translation of Nietzsche then. Try anything by Walter Kaufmann...
And you noticed how the poster shifted the decimal point on IBM's market cap too, right? Methinks we're being trolled...

It's amazing what you can get sometimes just by asking. Anybody who's read Feynman should get the humorous reference in the title of this post.
Sex with OSS developers, woo hoo!

I'd be scared to see what Winnie the Pooh would look like if it was e. e. milne... :-)
...actually, I tried to post what it would look like in e. e. cummings style, but CowboyNeal's lameness filter prevented me! Now *that's* funny...
