  1. Re:Depends on Would You Pay Pennies For Game Features? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Similar to that, There are "free" MMOs out there...

Last Chaos - I believe it's made by the people who made "Sword of the New World". It's a free MMO. I didn't play it much but gold selling is the norm and so are micro-transactions who have NPCs setup to pickup your purchases.

Dungeon Runners - Sort of a Diablo-esque MMO. You can play for free but you cannot use pretty much any decent weapon that might drop from a boss or be given by special quests. For that you need to be a member, which will cost you $5 / month. Oh, and you cannot use the stacking health potions either.

Sword of the New World - While not free to play, it's a pretty cheap game. $20 for the game, $9 / month membership. You can purchase things outside the game, money, weapons, spells, and pick them up in game. This Korean game is being sold at Wal-Mart in the U.S. It was also previewed in Game Informer Magazine. I played it, it was pretty cool. Kind of a Guild Wars style game. You get to create a team of up to 3 members. So, you can always have a Healer, Tank, DPS group. Though, since most monsters die in 1 hit, you don't really need the traditional setup

In Korea, micro-transations are the norm. They're starting to make their way into the US market. But I can say, that after having played Tabula Rasa Beta, LOTRO, WOW, Shadowbane (trying it again, since it's ad supported free), Last Chaso, Dungeon Runners, EQ2, EQ, DAoC, CoH, CoV, Guild Wars, Sword of the New World, and I'm waiting for the Unreal Tournament-like MMORPG Fury to open their beta (they're selling beta CD's but their launcher tells you to wait a 'couple of days'... it's been 2 weeks so far), I can say that by far WoW is the most enjoyable by far, and I haven't even played it in probably 6-months.

I'm still looking for something that will be nearly as fun as WoW but not cost as much per month. The sweet spot for me is $10, I was paying this with LOTRO (a pretty good game that was close to WoW quality, but suffered the same as WoW except before you hit the max level) and I think for the AAA MMO, this is a fair price. Having found and played several free MMO's and some good very cheap MMO's, I see there being plenty of room for MMO prices to drop. I can see there being a WoW killer out there that's open source project, free, or very cheap based on ad supported and micro-transactions. I would pay $5 / month for WoW and probably never cancel if they ad supported it by putting some ads when zoning into dungeons/instances and into the game.

Until then, I'm a bit disappointed with the MMO commitment and costs considering what I've found out there. I've just started playing console and single player games again. To get some WoW, I just fire up WarcraftIII.

Oh, one other cool thing about Sword of the New World. EXP from quests came in the form of 'cards' which is an interesting concept as they might have been able to be traded to others (I never tried). It's interesting because it could make it easy for a friend to catch up to you if they joined the game at a later time.

It truly is brilliant though, how hard would you try to get a small $3.50 rebate back, but it was the reason you picked that product over a competitor. So they win twice, once on getting your business and again when they don't send you the check and you don't really care.

Sorry to hear about your rebate problems. I, nor my father (who's a real rebate and coupon junky), have never had a problem getting ours back, be it $5, $10, or $100. I've recently gotten probably over $400 in rebates the last few months. With new AT&T DSL service, I had to mail back a postcard with a sticker attached. That was $50. Then they gave me another $50 rebate for some reason. And then offered me another $25 rebate. All of which I received. My fiancee just got back a $5 rebate for some pet food or something.

Though, I recall seeing a breakdown of rebate returns based on rebate price and I think anything under $50 was like less than 20% return rate. Even at $100, the return rate was like 50%. I found that pretty amazing and hard to believe. Though, I cannot recall the study. I think it was a rebate firm trying to get some business from a company and tempting them the same way you point out.

It's possible it's merely a semantic issue or a bad implication on the part of Wikipedia.

I might have the post wrong as I'm referring to the context of "Seal of Quality" had nothing to do with "making a good game" in the sense that that game was enjoyable. If the "Seal of Quality" means that the game worked, as in Quality Control, I think there's something to be said about that, as drcagn (715012) points out.

I believe it was "Game Over" that talked about how making a game on the NES was more or less a license to print money. You produce a game and you where practically guaranteed 'x' number of sales, considering how every rental shop stocked NES games and often multiple copies. Most grocery stores where renting NES games and VHS tapes (something I don't see much anymore), gas stations and convenience stores where stocking NES games for rent. I don't remember the last time I saw a gas station renting games.

That's the "If you Build it" mentality, but it was so long ago, I could be mixing my sources. Which is why I'll have to go back and re-read it. Either way, great book and worth a read. (I recall that it was college reading for some business classes)

Suffice it to say it was all about making money. Wikipedia has a some good details you might be interested in reading. If only that were true. Part of the problem is that recently Six Apart like to interpret the TOS in ways that aren't explicitly stated in the TOS.

This isn't about how Six Apart or LJ likes to interpret the TOS. It's about how LJ users want to interpret the TOS. But lets put it a different way...

Premise A) The LJ TOS clearly states you cannot post "objectionable" material? objectionable being defined in the TOS under MEMBER CONDUCT but specifically item 1...

"Upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive to another's privacy (up to, but not excluding any address, email, phone number, or any other contact information without the written consent of the owner of such information), hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;".

No one has a problem with that, correct? Then lets go on to the next logical point...

Premise B) To put a link on your LJ blog, you have to post it. Correct? Any objections? There shouldn't be. Links cannot magically appear on your LJ blog.

Thus, since a link can be posted, and the contents of said link can be objectionable, it there for can be a TOS violation.

What those who are complaining are trying to argue is this...

That since a link does not literally contain the objectionable content (for example, an image), but is only a connection to said objectionable content, it cannot be objected to and it therefor does not apply to the TOS.

This premise if false. A link, a word, an image is content. ANY content can be objected to. That doesn't mean such an objection is always valid. It just means that someone could object it. LJ, in their clarifications, clearly pointed this policy out. They said: " any child p0rn objections will be followed up on, no matter what." They went on to say: "Only other objections that have been substantiated will be followed up on. Any objection that appears to be baseless will be ignored." (paraphrasing)

What's not to understand? Ironically, the blogger "liz_marcs" makes this comment...

Talk about a complete misunderstanding of how the Internet works.

The internet is nothing BUT links (aka connections) to material that is electronically transfered from one location to another. To go to a website, you have to make a link, a connection, to that website. Pictures on that site need to be linked too, even if they're on the same site, so your browser knows how and where to ask for them. I only bring this up because if you read "liz_marcs" conversation she posted to the LJ rep, it's clear "she" doesn't know how the internet works as she tries to be exclusive to some "links" but not others...

I'm not talking about displaying an objectionable image hosted on, say Photobucket, and linked using the "img" tag. I'm talking about linking to a site or an image using the "a href" tag.

So, it's not ok to link an objectionable image with an "img" tag, but it's ok to link to it with an anchor tag("a href")? An objectionable item is an objectionable item, it doesn't matter how you link it. You're directing (linking/connecting) others to it's access. That's the objection.

Some people cough up money for LJ too.

Good for LJ. Those who pay are a subset of those who have access for free. Everyone gets the "free" services, those who pay get more services. I just used the parent set of "free" people because everyone falls into that category.

And if a hosting service had this policy too,

    A lot
