Here's a goodie from one of the game conferences in the Bay Area, the lead designer (whose name just lept out of my brain) at CGC who designed the thing reported that the industrial designer who made the outer shell of the 7800 was fired personally by Trammel who threw the console at him and screamed that they (Atari) "would only be a computer company from now on". When the warehouse sold out if it's stockpile, Jack needed the mold diagrams to fabricate new ones - which were in the posession of the fired designer (lest they have to make expensive casts from the completed product).

The designer declined. Several times in fact. Often quite rudely. This is called "just deserts" in some cultures - "karma" in others.

Bad feedback coming in for Zelda. Most telling is:

"The game doesn't look very good. I don't just mean it doesn't look like Gears of War either, I mean it doesn't even look good for a GC game and let's be honest here that's what we're talking about. I've seen beautiful games on the Cube. Crystal Chronicles, Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 were all incredible looking games. Twilight Princess can't really compare to any of them. So he's right about that"

Granted they go onto defend the playability - but other - if not MOST of the other games for the Wii won't have the insane genius of Shigeru Miyamoto behind them. If you can be happy with 3-4 games that have that kind of brilliance behind them for the life of your system, with downgraded graphics for the rest, then happy times. I'm going to take delivery of a paintbrush with more firepower for developers to explore and exploit over the long-term.

The biggest beef I have with the Wii is that Nintendo has been VERY mum on the tech specs for its system. I strongly suspect it's a GameCube with beefed up memory. In which case, you'd be better off getting a 99-dollar Gamecube and putting the rest of your 150 in change to new games.

I'm glad that Sony stepped up to the plate to the tune of half a billion and issued free recalls ahead of the curve. In the USA they'd deny for another year or more and duck and cover until the govt mandated a recall or untill the lawsuits piled up (if C isn't higher than the cost of a recall - we won't do one).

But of course - for the Sony haters - them fixing a (serious) problem is a bad thing.

Considering that the PS2 is STILL outselling every console out there - including the 360 - it's a pretty good move. I'll probably even get the PS2 port of Vice City Stories when it comes out next year sometime just because it'd be nice to play the missions on the big-screen. The music is probably the best in the franchise as well.

Plus - although they improved some of the Liberty City Stories control shortcomings on the PSP, some missions are nice with the Dual-Shock controllers (vehicle racing missions particularly).

This franchise is pretty much what has kept me from the Wii. Plus the idea that something as groundbreaking might appear on the PS3 much like GTA did on the PS2. Call me a Wii hater (I like Nintendo keeping the industry fresh) but a million Mario derivations seems tired to me.

Launch means nothing to Japanese companies, and the history books. They will stick it out until they dominate. The fact that the PS2 sales STILL dominate makes that point clear as well as the 100 plus million units sold.

It'll be fun to watch - and play.
