Well I think the difference is the the US and British gov't stand for the ideals of freedom. I don't think freedom is something that exists... I think it's something we have to work towards. Sometimes we're not always as close as we'd like, but the ideals are still there. China has no interest and no desire for freedom of any kind. Ironically, they don't even like free software. China seems to work on the premise that if you block enough information for the outside people will begin to think they have it better than the rest of the world, and maybe they do... but I doubt it.

Sir, you are dead on. Just to add a little bit, I feel as though colleges have become far to lenient with who they are letting in. The standards have dropped much lower because it's becoming nearly impossible to find decent work without a B.S. in something. Colleges need to raise their standards. There are simply far too many areas of study where doing the bare minimum will afford you a decent grade. It almost seems that you need to go on with your education anymore to learn anything useful.

True, but in defense of Windows (wow.. did I just say that?), I've never had to compile anything from source nor do you have to use any kind of command line instructions (unless you want to... Ironically I always find myself using Linux commands by mistake). Installations are pretty intuitive in Windows.

The software repositories are nice in Linux, but I'd wonder how many people would realize they were there, assuming they were new, inexperienced users. I've always thought it would be great idea for Windows to provide something comparable. Might help limit the amount malware people get.

Lastly, you make the argument that Linux comes with those programs out of the box. Actually, you said Ubuntu comes with those programs. It seems to me, most Linux distro's only come with the bare necessities (Browser, Productivity Software, Media Player, Etc.). Windows typically has all of these, PLUS a bunch of crap you'll never need, use, or want.

As much as I hate Murdoch and all he stands for. Here's a list of everything thats wrong with your post:

He promotes big, lovely government, and he was paid well by the Powers that Be. You have proof of this? Somebody actually paid him for his investments, or he just got stinking rich off of them?

MySpace, though, is the anti-thesis of government. It's about freedom. People don't necessarily realize that, but that's the end result from allowing people to freely communicate, gather and entertain. You really think people stopped using MySpace because of their corporate ties. I'm sure some did, but most probably just hated their clunky Web 1.0 design. An easier explanation is something else moved into the market and took over. Somehow, someway, Facebook has a better product. MySpace needs to reinvent itself to compete. Freedom has nothing to do with it. The average person simply does not invest that much time into examining which company owns which - otherwise those counter-culture morons hanging out in front of Hot Topic in the mall would realize they are wearing cloths that are produced by Gap or American Eagle (not sure which??).

Murdoch overpaid for something that can probably never make a reasonable profit. ... Ummm... advertising? ever heard of it?

The future of the web is not about large-scale sites dominating over tiny ones. It's the whole long tail situation: the big sites are mere portals to other sites, and the sites that fail to do this properly will be hurt significantly by trying to be the big boy on campus. Those who made money by being shills for the State will also suffer (Fox, MSNBC, CNN, etc). Here... you're totally wrong. The future of the web is services. Who can provide the better services. Simple as that. And the "big boys" aren't being hurt as much as you might think for the little guys in this area... nope... not at all... not even close. Fox News provides a service that, albeit, is slanted. But it provides it's slanted views to a group willing to hear a slanted version of the truth. Every news source does that... digg included.

You failed Rupert. Go away. Failed in the long term yes... but still probably turned one hell of a profit. I'm sure he'll be mourning as he counts his billions. Please, think before you post. I'm not sure who modded this up... but this simply isn't true. Maybe it should be, but it's not.

It's the same reason you use SSH to connect to a server instead of telnet - plain text messages with password information, credit card statements, etc are not secure without some level of encryption. I apologize for my rude introduction to this post, but I'm just getting so sick of people getting modded up just on the premise that they are overly paranoid with their 5 year outlooks.

So it's not entirely unreasonable for console manufacturers to be taking this attitude. Should you be allowed to do whatever you want with your own hardware? Yes, but the hardware manufacturer has no obligation to make it easy for you. Agreed, but if the new software patch adds nothing to the system other than stopping attempts to run this "malicious" code, it adds no value for the end user. If this is the case, they are actually bloating systems with unnecessary code, in order to stop a "problem" that exists in less than 1% of machines. The hardware manufacturer has no obligation to make it easy for you, but they should have no reason to make it intentionally difficult. If you brick your machine, IMO, it's your fault.
