Absolutely on point. Parents should make the ultimate determination on what is right and wrong for their child. Apologies if my comment above made it sound like I was relying on the ratings systems to make the determination. These ratings are pretty arbitrary to begin with, and YOU KNOW Disney gets a little more slack with their content than anyone else.
True. But all the good that has ever come out of video game movies such as mortal kombat and to a lesser degree resident evil have been infinetly undone by Mario Bros.
You could argue that without violent games and movies these tendencies would not be realised, but I think that is a very naive notion.
I agree with the majority of the post, but based on observations, I would suspect that the majority of the world is desensitized to violence at least to some small degree. This is not to say that they would be more likely to commit a violent crime, just less likely to react to one. Again, this is not a good or a bad thing, just an observation.
I really feel as though the reason the media harps on video games is because they are still under the assumption that video games are made for kids and teenagers. Key demographics these days are probably closer to the 20-30 year old range. I would argue that it's probably not the greatest thing for a kid to be playing GTA IV, but that's just one man's opinion. When I have kids, I will use the ratings system as a suggestion on what to purchase for them, the same as I would do for movies or any other media.
Running Glider was one of the most entertaining things I did while playing.
This isn't going to the most popular thing ever said on slashdot, but here we go... if the most entertaining part of a game is watching an application play it for you, maybe the game isn't that good.
The big screwup is getting caught at collecting it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Google admitted to collecting this data without an inquiry from any European countries. Sorry, I didn't read the article, but I recall when this issue was first brought to light.
This was on entirely unencrypted, unprotected networks. It's like opening up the window and shouting your information into the street.

I don't understand how being an athiest would deter you from watching a work of fiction. Clearly the imagery suggested in the show had nothing to do with a particular type of religion that exists. Also, nothing about this series would imply that there was going to be a rational ending to this show. I don't ever recall a scientific or rational explanation to anything.
Don't mistake this for fanboyism or anything like that (I have both a PS3 and Xbox), but XBox has the only online service thats worth paying for. PSN and Wii are pathetic. The funny part was that the idea of paying for online gaming was one of the big sticking points that PS3 fanboys had against the Xbox. I guess now that Sony has a sizable market share, it's about time to change that tune. Oh well, at least it plays blu-ray.
While I'm not entirely anti-copyright. I just find it sad to think about all the works that could possibly fall into the public domain if this lunacy didn't exist. I'm so sick of these estates profitting on the backs of their talented relatives. If it were in public domain, maybe they could try and prove that the apple didnt fall far from the tree and find a way to profit out of it... or even, god forbid - come up with their own IP.
This is a great point. I've never heard of Philip Dick or his book unfortunantly. It seems like it would be right down my alley, and I may actually read it based on Google's tribute.
I would think with a name like Al Astronmer your career choices would be limiting. I guess I was right.

I'd be curious to know how much traffic patterns would change if the students DIDN'T know they were being monitored.
liberals are fairly... liberal in their thinking.
Liberals are... but democrats certaintly aren't. I haven't seen signs of liberal thinking from either party.
That's a lot of reading to do... thats why I just read the summaries. :-D.

It would be mildly amusing if it was someone saying "First!"
Yet iPhone dominates Android in the market. Why do you suppose that is?
Marketing mostly.... your average consumer has NO IDEA what android is.
So he'd be happy if aliens were actually invading?
From what I hear, it is generally accepted that a 5-15 min break every workhour is healthy for you
Isn't that what Slashdot is for?
Yes. I can hold and surf the web with my hands and fingers
The iPad doesn't have multi-tasking... You can only hold OR surf.
Whoever refuses to join the class action lawsuit has illegal copies on Windows!
I, too, hate it when game developers break through predefined molds and come up with some innovative and new.
You must be new here. Negative media exposure for Microsoft on /. is pretty much the norm.

... Now I have one more thing to use my Wii for other than playing the three decent Mario/Zelda games that get released every single year.
Mr President of Earth: Great Scott! Will it hit us?
President Doc Brown?
