  17. err, non-obvious here, PLEASE! on IBM Patents Web Page Templates · · Score: 1

a month or two ago I needed to convert some old IRC-type (though not actually IRC) logs to a more-readable format. I was far too lazy to spend the thirty minutes to an hour required to put in the HTML on each line of the file...

So I downloaded perl, spent the next day learning its basics, and.. get this.. made a program to create pages based on a template and using a few user-selected options. I still use it on the rare occasion I need to convert something.

Here's just an idea for a postulate:
if it takes less than a minute between being presented with a problem and comming up with the solution, the solution is not nonobvious. I dont care how fucking smart you may think you are. Being able to apply the solution within that minute doesnt matter, as long as you have the idea for it in your head, because these patents dont cover specifics, but concepts. So you came up with the concept, it's not nonobvious.

    Thought Process to any problem:
    1) "Damnit, I dont want to have to do this.."
    2) "Wish I had something to do it for me.."
    3) "Seems like it would be easy enough, just inserting this same code over and over again, it's finding the splits by eye which is taking so long.. I could do it through find and replace but replacing one thing adds something to the block which would trigger the find and replace elsewhere. Then there's some cases I want other things to happen.. and I also want t move around some of these blocks.."
    4) [all the above becomes general outlines in your head]
    5) "Hey, didnt Vhalros say something the other day about how perl is good with Regexps..?"

time: probably no more than 45 seconds. The human brain does some great things with parralell proccessing.

I think it took longer to figure out how to use the wheel effectively using an axel, and I'm pretty sure that one's considered obvious.

  24. The work of a disgruntled Webmaster? on New (More) Annoying Microsoft Worm Hits Net · · Score: 1

This seems like just the kind of thing I'd do if I had too much time on my hands. Webmasters everywhere are sick of seeing their logs get filled up with shit related to this, and everyone seems to be ignoring that these things still exist, only because old news seems dull.
So how do you combat this? create awareness? force people to know?
Well you could make something like Code Red, but then people would just ignore it a week later..
The problem with Code Red was that it was Over-Hyped, and Hyped incorrectly.
Saw 'experts' on the news saying that the virus could be removed by rebooting. Result: A lot of people rebooted, nothing changed. Even if a lot of people actually installed the patch, it doesnt help at all that the solution given by many people to any problem is to completely reinstall whatever the effected programs are. Even I do that to individual programs. I even did that in Linux yesterday (I usually dont take any of my windows policies over to linux)

So how do you FORCE people to listen? I mean even if you make people listen to one problem, they may not hear about another one, so if Code Red is gone you can still find people hitting you with whatever else they had before. And they're both still out there.

So why not create something that is not at all stealthy, not fast, not anything at all to make people not see it, just completely in-your-face and seeming to serve no purpose other than to be in-your-face.

As I type this, my tailed log has scrolled more than code red ever did on its worst day. I think this will get someones attention. If you thought Code Red II was annoying still appearing in your log every now and then, well you won't as easily be able to ignore when just one of these things tries to connect.

Checking out some of the talk on slashdot, it seems that some day we will have this, and as proccessors grow hotter, it will eventually become required.
The simple reason we dont currently have this is for the same reason motherboards dont have integrated RAM anymore. With so many geeks using their system temperature as a bragging right, it's just much more feasible to let those geeks install whatever cooling solution they want themselves.
