A lot of the problems with things like this, online privacy, is that many people think that if you have nothing to hide, you shouldnt care, so there shouldnt be any problem.
This doesnt go merely for Privacy, but for other things, like Drug Use.
I have never used drugs, or alchohol, other than those perscribed by a doctor. I do this for several reasons, including my desire to seem more credible when voicing my opinions on such things, that Drugs should be legalized for Personal Use, and that provided you arent endangering others, Alchohol should be legal for any age.
I havent killed myself, but I believe in the right to suicide, I havent killed anyone else, but I can fathom a justified murder.
To become credible, you need to first show that privacy isnt merely an issue of protecting what you have and dont want others to have, but protecting your right to choose who to give things to.
We cannot hope to have a free election if we have to tell others who we vote for, Likewise we cannot hope to have free speech if we are required to tell everyone in our Catholic Church that we are Pro-Choice.
So just to prove credibility, to show that you are willing to admit your flaws provided you have your option to admit them or not admit them, When writing your congressman or other representative demanding your right to privacy, Include a print-out of your complete directory tree, Every Porn-Soaked bit of it.
Because you need to show them that what they're saying about "If you dont have anything to hide..." isnt the fucking point.
what could this concievably have to do with the attack?

Yes, we can all see it's not a photograph, but a computer-generated image. But does that in ANY WAY AT ALL challenge its authenticity? Do you ever see Any Photographs of what a new product is going to look like just after the first rumors of it came out? Of course not. The actual product hasnt been made yet, so there are no photographs.
Did you see a Photograph of the Playstation 2 when people first started hearing about that? No, of course you didnt, you saw a Computer-Generated image of what they thought it was going to look like.
Of course the image is Manufactured, The Product hasnt been Made yet. Because it's manufactured, does that make it/fake/? Not at all. In fact my only problem with the image is the font used to write out "Home Station" is one not made by Microsoft, and they probably wouldnt want to go through any legal battles when the original creator decides that he has a stake in the trademark.
the point of paper: E-Paper should stay expensive!
on
E-Paper Moves Closer
·
· Score: 1
The point of paper, as I use it, besides for drawing and writing things by hand, is to back up things.
if You've got some important records, you cant just back up everything to disk. What if there's a power short? Oh, go to another computer? What if lightning hits Nearby?
I guess you could use CD, but that only works so far.
It's already been pointed out that the digital age will have nothing in it for people to find in a thousand years (or more likely, in a couple million years... damn nuclear wessels) and with E-Paper, what less will we have?
Thousands of pages of blank, near-blank, or blotchy.. meaningless pages.
Paper can survive EMP, E-paper cant. No point without regular paper.
Some people might like books with pages on them, I think these people are just avoiding the point that nobody has made a decent datapad yet. The whole "e-paper" idea will be looked at as a horrible joke in 60 years, at which time I'd hope we'd have an acceptable datapad of some sort, somewhere.
In two generations, anyone who doesnt like to read off a screen will be very old. Screen technology will also have changed drasticly, for that matter, so it is unlikely that anyone will give a damn. You want something that looks like paper? turn your monitor up to 2^256 colors, and pick it off the desk for a moment.
in the mean time though, maybe these people can make some money in their meaningless endevor
I wish people will stop using the past tense when talking about Code Red. There are STILL unpatched servers out there!
Is this only happening in My IP block, or has everyone just decided to ignore it?
As for "Important Binaries" I think you overlooked that it isnt just Important Binaries which are being written to. It's also your current working directory, so if you run the program and then switch to say, a program you were working on, there's another insance.
No this is nothing like Code Red, and yes the site linked to is crap. (notice that they ask for a phone number before letting you download the check? Hmm, I wonder what/that/ could be about)
But It's still nice to see a security message on slashdot every now and then.
it listens on UDP. When it recieves the UDP request which contains the IP address and Port of the attacker, it will open a TCP connection to that IP & port. So it listens on a UDP port and the system gets compromised using TCP.
Open-Source is made because it would be done anyway. If you're doing your math homework and you decide you want a program to handle some of the tediuos calculations for you, is there any point in withholding the source code? Of course not.
Open source software is created because of the needs of the individual. Linus wanted to make a terminal emulator, I guess because he didnt like the one he was using. When he had something he liked, he uploaded it to ftp. Because it was for personal use, chances were things wouldnt work exactly the same on someone else's computer, so if they want it for personal use too, they have to make it work for themselves.
I see Open Source as something which we wioll eventually all turn to: A Programmer is hired by a company to carry out a specific task, he codes it, and in the future anyone else can use what he makes.
so why do we open source? For one thing, we dont have any reason not to. It encourages others to do better than us, enouraging us to do better than ourselves.
For another, It's become popular, so it isnt inconvenient to do it. If nobody used open source, people might be caught off-gaurd having to compile programs themselves. However, since open source is being used by many people, we've got a standard "configure, make, make install" proccess, which doesnt put anyone in unfamiliar territory.
So we make it open source because we're making it in the first place and there's no point in not making it open source. The benifits of it, I dont think are related. While we have so many benifits though, there's no point in fighting open-source.
We already have a number for an address, a number for social security, an if you're in highschool a student id.
these are the numbers we use to talk to the government already, what's your problem with having fewer to write down when filling out government forms?
An "Open Source Community" as it's called, has absolutely Zero Quality Control. The whole point is that you can fuck it up however you want and nobody will bother you for it.
Microsoft gets attacked more not because it is less secure, but because there are more people who use it[interpret last line in a variety of ways]
The only thing that really makes these non-MS programs "more secure" is that they've been using permissions for a longer run.
and guess what, MS is using permissions in their new releases.
Guess what else:
It won't make one bit of difference. The users are still just as likely to open a file if that file asks to please give Root Access first. The only thing that file permissions will do for the average user is make them More Careless.
And don't lie to yourself thinking if everyone used Linux or BeOS it would all be O-K, because it really wouldnt change anything. As soon as a user realizes that they need to have write permissions to certain directories to install files, they'll just give themselves write access to everything, and they're still screwed when a virus hits.
Think there would be fewer viruses under Open Source? That's just bullshit. The truth is that if EVERYONE started using Open Source programs, Many open source projects would DIE. You think script kiddies are bad now when they find an exploit months or years after a program is released? Wait until you can't even release a program anymore because if you missed something Anywhere, it will be found in a week and exploited before you hear about it.
Sure, it leads to all your bugs being found faster, but will the same people who are opening Sircam in outlook bother to check for an update? Will they ever download an open source program again after hearing how easily bugs can be found in them?
Just a word to you: What the hell makes you think you're the only Microsoft Basher who's going to post here? Slashdot is Anti-MS. If you think you can be the "First to tell the 'truth'" here, you're a god damned idiot.
No, I dislike MS too. Yah I'm using Windows to type this up and my excuse is that I'd have to turn off my linux box to remove the extra HD and use it to install Lilo on this computer, and I dont want to turn that off since I tend to only turn computers off when I need to reboot to fix something. Last time I "rebooted" it I was asleep and the power flickered. [I guess I should get a UPS at some point]

they would all be much cooler, and we'd all benifit, if they were called Rays!
Whose decision was it to call them beams?
Was it to make them sound LESS Sci-Fi?
I think that should never be the goal of anything.
Everyone grew up knowing the basic rule: Beams are tools, Rays are weapons.
We should stick by this rule to the end.
Until then, I refuse to take any of this seriously. Go ahead and hit me with your stupid "Incapacitation Beam" and I dont care.
Everyone knows that Rays are where its at.
This was all prompted by the pure and utter obscurity of some of these so-called "beams".
A Groginess beam? Come on!
How could anyone/seriously/ come up with that, and NOT call it a ray?.
Whenever customers start asking for options, companies always seem to either add or remove the feature entirely.
You see this more in software than in hardware (since hardware can sometimes be changed in the software end anyway) But this is really getting out of hand.
Customer: "I want to be able to turn off auto-save"
Company: "Fine, no more auto-save"
Customer: "wtf!? Where's my auto-save!?"
Company: "You said you didnt want it."
Customer: "You're a fucking dumbass."
Company: "But you're still going to buy it anyway, right?"
Majority of Customers: "Of course, I'm a fucking dumbass too."
Point? Simply tell Tivo that you wont even consider buying a Tivo unless they make storing off-site an OPTION rather than forcing you to not use your own hard drive.
Forcing you to store things elsewhere is exactly the same as things like BattleNet and that stupid Black&White server thing. Sure it's nice to have, but why in fucking hell would you force it on someone?
There's a simple solution, just like there is with battlenet: Trick the Tivo into thinking something else is Tivo's server, and have it save there; but why force customers to do this sort of thing which the majority of them probably wont even know how to do?
Even barring FPS games, what about Onlive Traveller and any of the [bound to be] hundreds of other small, crappy chat programs started durring the VRML Hype?
even if worlds.com was the first (which I seriously doubt they were), can they really make a patent on it, what has it been? 5, years later?
After sitting by and letting others do the same thing? Without them having to steal their blatantly obvious idea to do it?
How's this for a general rule:
If after 5 years of publicly using your blatantly obvious invention without patenting it, and having no real competition without patenting it, It is most definatly too obvious and/or stupid to warant a patent.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm trying to patent my religion before jack chick rights about it so I can sue his ass
I think that the movie's overall badness was a plus. It made it feel like a real game:)
The movie of course lost many points from me for not including a Bard-class character.
I must also point out that there were enough star wars and indiana jones references to play The Drinking Game.
Was the movie bad? Yes
Should you see it? Hell No
The ending battle-scene was nice, and you should definatly see that on HBO sometime, just for fun. You'd have to pay me to sit through the movie again, though.
Hello Sir, Madam, Transexual, or Male Lesbian, I am Vincent Starre, and I wish to inform you of the tragedy of un-skizzled Vinnies.
It is a sad fact that in today's world of high-powered computers, 16 year old millionaires, and pr0n, that so many of our youth today have slipped through the cracks of society. That with all our technologies and advances in science, we still are faced with the growing problem, of those who lack $killz. I am of course refering to the sad case, of the Vinnies.
Vinnies across the world are constantly faced with the torment of being unaccepted in the world, because of their lack of $killz. They are not always born without $killz but often due to financial difficulties or a troubled childhood, Vinnies everywhere are often forced to live without $killz, making do with what they can find, usually in the form of unsatisfactory pr0n or low-res FPS Games.
The truth is, the Vinnie is an Endangered species. Darwin's laws of natural selection, whether you believe in them or not, hold true in society: Without $killz, the more l337 will survive, and the $kizzless bastards will die.
If you've read this far, you're probably wondering: "What can I do to help?" and for a long time, I, like many Vinnies, was at the same point, wondering what I, or anyone for that matter, could do to help. But now that time has changed and there is a new hope for $kizzless Vinnies everywhere. That hope is the Save the Vinnie fund, set up by me, Vincent Starre just over a year ago to help the cronically un-l337 Vinnies that have been the shame of society for so many years before. By making just a small donation of Knowledges, Cash Funds, or Hardware, you can touch the life of a Vinnie in need, and help put that one Vinnie back on the right path, to gain the dream that all Vinnies have, of someday getting m4d $killz.
Thank You,
Vincent Starre, Founder of the Save The Vinnie Fund
