Why not give it something to do with its free time? Please take one of these free CDs containing information and software which can be used to help avance science, medicine, or meaningless wank-jobs like key breaking. All that is required to help is for you to install the project which intrests you most, the computer will do the rest!" or something
You don't get it. "If you don't like it, don't use it" is such a horrible defense, and yet it is spouted often enough to be sickening. For the most part, we aren't using it. This doesnt change that it is horrible. We would love for it not to suck. That would be great. The Gimp's UI shows a blatant disregard for all input from those who have been complaining for years. What incentive is there to help out by donating to a project which obviously doesnt consider making a project which is the least bit usable a high priority? At least you didnt say "If you dont like it, change it yourself!" which I hear far too much. Nobody expects you to get off your ass and do something about it, but if I sit down to eat and you serve me crap on a plate, expect some type of complaint before I leave. Especially when you say "This is free dinner 2.0! I know you hated it before but this is better!"

It _DESERVES_ a good, well-written and (for the most part) accurate bashing-the-fuck out of it. The gimp is a great tool, but I'd certainly never use it for anything I use photoshop for.

Ignoring an ad is fine, but using technology to see that you never get the opportunity to ignore something, that's just wrong. Any time you decide not to follow the model which the content-providers have chosen to follow, you're being dishonest. I'm not saying "It's theft!" or "What you're doing is illegal!", but if you use technology to ensure that you never have the opportunity to follow the model, you have no business looking at the content provided by that model. Basically: "It's not a crime, but you're still an asshole"
I really wish everyone thought the way you did. Perhaps some standard can be developed where a browser can have an option: "I dont want to see any ads" and from then on it would start sending along with its HTTP headers: Advertising: NoThanks
and then honest people like you could be redirected to a page that says "Sorry, we only want you to see this if you see advertising as well", and you could go on about your business.
