Question for you: how can you have loading delays...with a text editor? Compilation I get but so much of what we do involves trivial load times.
As for what I use -- office suite, various browsers (but not the dreaded Chrome), text editors, Eudora for email, shell programs, image editors. But I go out of my way to use small (if not tiny, by today's standards) programs.
My one need for an SSD is audio editing -- gigabyte WAV files, using Audacity. Load/save times went from 3 to 6 minute range, to 1 to 2 minute range. But honestly, my other gradual refinements of my editing technique have paid off way more -- optimizing keystrokes, use of shortcuts, improvements in editing techniques and methods.
Everyone I know has moved to SSD for their primary drive, and are only using rotational drives for medium length local archival purposes.
Ten machines here. Just one uses an SSD at all, and that only as a temp. drive for editing large audio files.
I simply don't need one for other purposes.
Machines here stay on. Not loading VMs or 60GB games. Apps used stay loaded.
And even on the machine with the SSD, I've only noticed a 3x speed improvement (3 month old Intel 530 series). Worth it to me, because I spend 10 hours a week editing, but otherwise nothing to write home about.
I say SSDs are over-hyped, and I'm an original speed freak, changing the refresh interval on my PC clone to gain, what was it, 2 or 3% performance improvement. Disk optimizing in the PC XT days before anyone else I knew. But SSDs? For the most part, just not that impressed.
I'd rather hear about Chrome finally fixing its "eating all your RAM" issue, because that truly turns your machine into a dog.
I realize you are speaking mostly in jest, but it is a misconcept that trees use/need/take water.
After the first 2 years, you never need to water them. They tap into the ground for their water. And during those first 2 years, the water they need is about 10 gallons per week, during the dry season. When we wash & prep the parsley we eat in one week, we create 2 gallons of waste water (that could go to that tree). Clothes washers create gallons & gallons of gray water that can be used to water trees -- in our household, we produce 150+ gallons of gray water from clothes washing alone.
It takes ridiculously small amounts of work and creativity to have enough water for outdoor plants without ever having to turn on a tap.
They always need help, of all kinds -- donations of food, money, time, etc. I happen to have a truck, so I donate that. I also love the physical workout. Looking forward to doing it again this fall.
And the net effect is almost a half million trees planted in this area in the past 25 years.
A man, identified only as "A.P.K." -- no last name -- was seen walking toward the Golden Gate bridge while repeatedly muttering "The whole plan is ruined...one minute, global domination, the next minute, total failure..."
Wait, there's more...Google has a page analyser that tells you what you need to do to tweak pages. I took one of my pages and was told the font was too small. So I jacked it up. Same "problem". So I jacked it up again, and again. I never got the "too small" message to go away. So, thanks, Google, you've installed an idiot filter. I don't want the idiots you will be sending to HuffPost mega picture click-fests.
I think you may have misunderstood my bracketed remark.
What I was trying to say is that, since Windows 8 is universally despised, it can't be people defending Windows 8 who are thumbs-downing this video. There are too few to defend 8, and too many (who can't stand it) who would want to thumbs-up this video (if anything).
So, what is left is that people don't like the aspects of this presentation not related to a Microsoft operating system. This reflects badly on either the presenter (I've not watched the video), or the software/style of presentation, or both.
The net result is the same -- there is nothing here to recommend this style of presentation.
If this video (style) is so great, why are the likes to dislikes just 3 to 1? (It can't be because people actually like Windows 8, and are thus thumbs-downing this video.)
Did I say I'm not sympathetic? I happen to have kids, so I come at this from the "think of the children" angle.
I'm just surprised cabs let people not use seatbelts, is all. It wouldn't take too many sting operations for them to change, though...
I find it fascinating what we freak out about, versus what we tolerate. The same set of points can be made about city buses. I get that seatbelts are harder for them to use. And that they are heavier vehicles, so the relative force imparted on collision is less. Still, no belts. And what about Greyhound buses? No belts there the last time I road one (ten years ago).
Indeed. This constant "boom" was given an unfortunately misleading name. It is more like an infinite Tsunami, able to sweep over and inundate everything.
I wonder, will this become something driverless cars report?
One of the pluses of everyone having dash cams would be catching and consequencing this sort of behavior.
Driverless cars, lacking the human motive of revenge, would lend themselves to this form of policing. i.e. be more likely to be trusted by the courts.
Yes, I realize how Orwellian this is. And yes I think this sort of thing will happen in the not too distant future.
Also, "Secret Cities Of The A-Bomb", "Pandora's Promise" and the BBC's "Oppenheimer: The Father Of The Atomic Bomb"
Ok, then where would this woman rank on your scale?

I used an exercise ball "chair" for about a year (until I moved and couldn't take it with me).
Good point: you are exercising and moving your body all the time.
Bad point: it can get hot/sweaty as you are sitting on plastic/rubber.
Microchip under the skin it is then.

Great example: Friends Of Trees (or similarly themed orgs).

Just take it in. Speaking for Comcast, I know that I can take any equipment in at any time and get a replacement. Done.
How does this make it to the main page?

Thanks. I've never seen a (home) router with more than 4 ports. The ones with more ports have been switches.
If you are running so much cat6 to every room, what kind of switching/back plane do you use/recommend?

Can't you just read the answer off your mom's utility bill?
Good news for your fear of reading. TFA has an animated GIF that shows the billboard in action.
In the BBS days, pressing X (eXpert) got you a prompt and it was up to you to know what each letter did.
We need the ability to choose the complexity/options level of our interfaces. Especially car and OS ones.

Why don't we wear seatbelts in taxi cabs? Is it even legal to not wear seat belts?
@jabberw0k And you said that in under 140 characters! WTG! #AnnoyingOrange

So that employees go back to work in 60 seconds instead of 10 minutes.
