    Oh thank god someone else get's it. If reducing greenhouse emissions was the true goal of cap-and-trade, then the European model is indeed lacking. If [a portion of] the effort of cap-and-trade is simply to move money around from the producers to the non-producers, then the European model is a partial success. Regarding the French nuclear power solution, I both admire and envy them that they have accomplished what they have. Are there no hippies in France or what? :)

    I never saw this as a viable business model regardless of the economy. Like many social programs the OLPC concept is rooted in feeling good about participating in the pursuit of a dream. The hungry children in Ethiopia that are handed some hardware instead of a bag of rice are really just a side-effect.

    A lot of taxes are avoided by immigrants requesting to be paid in cash. Also, illegals can dial 911 just like anyone else, can still access our free education system, and (contrary to political rhetoric) are NOT turned away from Hospitals! What other direct benefits are you referring to? Welfare? THE NET EFFECT ON THE US ECONOMY BY THE AVERAGE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IS NEGATIVE. Read it again. That being said, I don't believe they are really a significant cause one way or the other of our current problems. Why you think "no-bid" gub'mint contracts are some looming cancer on our economy is beyond me.

    I would submit that these types of cons are more prevalent because they alleviate any feelings of guilt from the con men, not because they are more effective. Also, if and when the con gets busted the jury is more likely to go easy on the perpetrators because they were apparently preying on 'would-be predators'...

    When the TRUE agenda differs from the STATED agenda, I have a problem. Conservative talk radio, Planned Parenthood, the NRA, and the DailyKos have their agendas but it doesn't bother me because they seem consistent. What bothers me is when proclaimed non-political entities seem to have significant political bias driving their actions.

Yes, the ideal of Socialism is appealing (to some), but I challenge you to show me a practical application of it (now or ever) in a country that you would prefer to live in. Cuba??

    Michael, you're playing the moral equivalence card which is irrelevant. I said that by defining evil as a threat to one's way of life, then we were evil in the eyes of the USSR. What the hell does "just as bad as the Russians" have to do with anything? I'm talking about preferable WAYS OF LIFE for citizens! By the way, the UK is not Socialist. Plus, it's a bit apples-to-oranges to compare such a homogeneous place with such a diverse one as the US. How do you think the descendants of the UK are doing in the US compared to those still living in the UK?

    Phroggy, the USSR is and was not evil, it was simply a threat to our way of life. Some people describe that as evil, but by that definition the USA was evil to Russians. TRUST ME, young man, the American way of life is preferable. Also, don't be so quick to call fear of Socialism "irrational".

    TFA says that "most" of the Independents surveyed are in Academia, which has a noted lean to the left in America.

    It is the economists on WALL STREET, not those on campus, whose lives directly depend on a strong economy. I have a strong feeling that if they were polled the results would be heavily skewed towards the candidate that is not announcing large tax increases...

    Speaking of which, one of the issues asked of the economists is which candidate would "raise taxes on the wealthy". Does anyone contend that there is dispute on that issue? Also, doesn't posing that question imply that it is a presumed virtue of a candidate?

    This survey is not seeking truth, it is seeking to influence political opinion of those reading it.
