I think it be nice to have e-mail programs that automatically convert and attach a PDF version of every attached file. This way, the reader gets the native file plus the read only PDF copy for those that don't own the necessary software.
Why not just give every item an IPv6 address? Assign the UCC a/16 for merchandise and you've got 2^112 == 5e33 possible codes. The IPv6 folks are going on and on about giving everything an IP address--wouldn't this be a perfect application?

I think there's a lot to be said for appealing to customer's sense of propriety rather than merely his or her pocketbook.
