Another thing they might try is to look at average loudness. It seems like commercials are pumped up a bit from regular shows.
I wish I could cite my source but I was told years ago that the TV ads actually are louder. The reasoning is/was that people get up and walk away from the TV when the commercials come on. They go in to the kitchen to get a drink or food, they go to the bathroom. So, the advertisers make their ad louder so people can hear it from the other room. It might not be the case for every TV ad, but it certainly is the case for the vast majority.
UMD is considered a top-tier CS school, public though it may be.
now or in 1993 when he graduated? I don't know the exact stats, but since i just graduated from UMD recently, I know that they have only recently become a "Public Ivy".
Sergey Brin is a University of Maryland graduate. You'd think he might be able to realize that there is more to a person than where they got their degree, but I guess they have classes to correct that at Stanford.

there seems to be on-going speculations about Oracle buying out a distro
i've been using firefox on windows since before it had an installer, and I have only had it crash when acrobat was involved. I keep it open every day at work with pandora, gmail, and other sites open constantly and I have never had issues with memory. I'm on a p4 1.7 w/ 512mb ram w/ win xp and autocad open in the background, and FF (1.5.0.7) is using 98mb of memory. Yeah thats high, but it doesn't crash on me. On the other hand, my girlfriend has FF lock up all the time on her ibm laptop. I don't know what I'm doing different, but i guess it chooses to not annoy me for some reason.
Seconded. The only reason I moved to XP in the first place was because ePSXe ran better in it. Since I don't use that anymore, I've dropped back to 2k and I never plan on upgrading. If i should be forced to move from 2k, I already have a powerbook/g4 and linux on another partition waiting for me.
You hear an explosion and a scream in the distance
I too think and exploding device or possibly a more humane "stun gun" type action would be more appropriate than a screaming phone. Think of all the car alarms that are ignored now. I think it would be a lot harder to ignore some one going in to convulsions on the floor.
Slackware was the first linux distro that I used in depth. As with eveyone who uses Slackware, the lessons I learned about software and Linux itself I will take with me to every distro I try. The philosophy of Slackware Package Management is that nothing gets installed behind your back. You control every single aspect of the package build/install process. You control exactly what is installed and with what options. The SlackBuild Scripts help automate the compilation of a single package and keep consitency in the system. One important project that everyone should know about is slackbuilds.org. This site is run by several regulars of ##slackware on freenode, and is a repository of quality SlackBuild Scripts. Anyone can submit a script, but each is tested before it is posted for quality assurance. I have since moved on to Gentoo for the more automated build process, but I am glad I spent time learning the basics with Slackware.
I agree that the term podcasting is confusing. My first time hearing it, I thought it was a specific audio stream that Apple was marketing for exclusive play on iPods and iTunes (much like shoutcast). As such, I completely ignored every thing i saw on the net that said "podcast" because I don't use iTunes or an iPod. Months later it finally hit me that it really has nothing to do specifically with the iPod. I do not know how the term came about, but i have noticed that the iTunes program has podcast specific stuff in it. Personally, I have no desire to ever listen to a "podcast", and I do think it would be wise for people to start using other terms, such as those suggested in the summary.
I also see where Apple is going with their lawsuit. I think that myPodder definitely points directly back to iPod. I can visualize the argument about it pointing to podcast and podcast not being owned by Apple, but I don't think anyone can argue that podcast is derived not from iPod. This case is necessary to provide the boundary line for "going too far."
Actually, this theory was "Myth-Busted", and proven to be wrong. IIRC, they fired bullets in to a pig carcass and/or a bullistic jelly-man from several different guns that included rifles and hand guns to prove if movies were right or wrong. They observed the reaction of the "body" and I believe they actually measured the force acted upon the body. Even if you think about it logically without doing any calculations, there is no way a bullet could knock a person down, let alone throw them backward. The collision would have to be perfectly elastic (bounce off each other, bullet could not enter the body).
I think the worst movie about a computer guy would have to be swordfish. Creating a worm doesn't involve moving little 3-D blocks around on a computer screen.
but it does involve Halli Berri topless, and a huge number of lcd screens.
I, too, have been installing gentoo for the past 2 days. This is my second gentoo install, so I thought it would go a little smoother, and it did (both using 2006.1). However, it was not without bumps, and it is definitely not the most elegant of install procedures. Both times I have used the online documentation and had no problems. The first time, i used the Gentoo Linux x86 Quick Install Guide (even tho I was installing amd64, not x86). This time I used the Gentoo Handbook. I think that both documents are well written and if you read them carefully, you will not have any problems getting a base system installed "quickly". For me, it took a long time (well over an hour) because I read the sections as I am installing and it takes me a little longer to understand everything because I'm still newer to Linux. Personally, I would like to see a ncurses based install process much like Slackware's (or others) where I have to be at the keyboard to set up some initial settings and select packages, but then I can walk away while everything is downloading and installing.
All in all, I would say that the LiveCD+CLI install method of Gentoo did not cause me any less or more distress than any other *nix install I have used (i have not used Ubuntu yet because after using apt in Debian, I have no wishes to use a binary-based distro). Still, I would choose Slackware's or FreeBSD's install process any day of the week.
i second DSL. I have it running on my Toshiba Satellite w/ a pentium 133mhz and 1.5gb hd. Only thing, I had to upgrade the memory to more than 8mb which was a limitation of X11, not linux itself (i bought a 32mb stick for like $25 off the internet). Oh and, if you have to get a pc card for wireless, make sure it works with the old style pc slot (as my linksys did not).
I actually think that statement is quite informative, and used for effect rather than for straight facts. Like you said, I have no idea how much data 1-inch drives can hold today, but I understand this statement fully. The gist of the statement is basically, "the old drive was huge and stored little, while new drives are tiny and store a lot." I don't see why it needs to be more specific than that...if you want details, RTFA.
thank you, AC, for proving my point. "Where are you at" is still broken English, and it is a product of the uneducated influencing other uneducated people. I'm not saying that this is only brought about through rap, as I think you can prove that the majority of musicians in any genre are uneducated by schoolastic standards. But, I said rap because that is what is dominating our pop culture right now, and that would be a more logical scapegoat than AIM.

That's what SETI's At Home software is for.
And to give it that 1950's feel, "So THAT'S what a Hollywood set looks like!"

For me, women create pop-ups. Some times it can be quite embarrassing, but most of the time we both enjoy those pop-ups.
