as anyone who has ears knows, it is rap/pop culture that ruins our grammar. Prime example is all the morons out there who say "where you at?" so much, that it turns in to a marketing campaign aimed directly at the morons who think it is correct to talk like that. If you want to blame AIM/instant messaging/email for anything, you might be able to get away with saying it creates bad typing habbits. But for me, personally, it taught me how to type.
not to mention if the kid is fat, their peers will take care of that by making fun of them until he/she develops a disorder and requires therapy.
If the kid is not making wise decisions at school, then that is an indication of a problem at home. A lowsy parent isn't going to (a) care enough to participate in this or (b) block the "correct" foods. And if the parent is lowsy, does participate, and blocks the right foods but doesn't have control of their kid, they will trade for the food they want. If the kid has enough will, they are going to find a way to beat the system. Placing restrictions on them will not work. The only true way to curb this is to reform the options offered to every student by the school.
where is my money for being tricked into clicking on ads? I want $0.05 deposited into my account everytime I see a "Search for on EBAY!". Kramer, Jackie Chiles, and I will be in your office in the morning to sign the paperwork.
this gets way off topic of the article, but is on the topic of this thread. I have been using computers casually for 12-15 years now, and I gotta say, I have never wanted to save two or more files into a single folder where their name was the same but case was different. I can see some benefit in security, so that you don't mean to run "MySqL" but you get the virus "mysql" instead (just used to prove a point). But, really, who has a need to save files like Foo.txt, FOo.txt, fOO.txt, etc. all in the same directory, and doesn't give them a more descriptive name? But I guess thats just me being a hobbyist and not a professional sys-admin/programmer.
The really sweet thing about this plan is that there will still be people complaining about it. Just like if G.W. Bush didn't win, SNL would still make fun of the president, and you would overhear people saying "the president sucks".
Like totally. I can't, like, wait to, like, see what my, like, friends did, like, over the last few, like, hours since I like, last texted them, like, on my pink Razor, like.
I read thru most of the comments on this page, and several people came close to what I think the real reason for this deal is, but no one nailed it. To me, this is a simple example of business 101. AMD has always been a niche vendor. Recently they have begun to spread out, but it is obvious from all the comments on this page that they are still a "gamers" chip. Where Intel and Dell made it big was low-end, mass sale business computers. Intel has their crappy but good enough integrated video chipset which is a part of the vast majority of motherboards. In order for AMD to really be a big player, it needed to a) build it's own integrated chipset from scratch or b) buy a company that already makes integrated video chipsets. Option b won, and while it might cost more initially, it should pay off in the long term.
I believe this will not stop nVidia from making nForce boards, and it would be stupid of AMD to stop production of ATI 3d cards. I think this may increase the quality of ATI's support for Linux, but I don't think it will be anything drastic.
just to follow the same train of thought, Joomla forked a few months ago from Mambo because of licensing issues, i believe. I have used a few different CMS's over the years, and I can say that Joomla (which I currently use for 3 websites) is good but not great. The back end is a little cumbersome for my non-webnerd friends. My biggest pet-peeve is that the front end is not 100% customizable without editing code. You only have a handful of options on how the modules are displayed, but these options will be fine for the majority of people. Joomla has a large community and a large collection of "plugins" so it shouldn't be hard for anyone to get a feature rich website running quickly.
I used e107 for a while, and the one thing I liked better about e107 is that the frontend is 100% customizable. You define exactly how you want each element to be displayed, but I can see how Joomla's approach is easier for novice users. I can't remember specifically why I stopped using e107, but I do remember I was never satisfied with the "plugins".
just last night I discovered Drupal. I installed it on my webserver to try it out, and I can tell you that the installation process is nowhere near as nice an experience as Joomla's. Other than that, I can't tell you much about Drupal because it took me too long to get the thing running, but it looks very promising.
in closing, I too believe Joomla will get this award, and I think it is well deserved.
or even better, how about the doctor opens his/her eyes before closing up the patient? No, that would be too easy, and there's no way to profit from it.
No, I really think they spun it off "hipster". The reason is that Elaine, on Seinfeld called Kramer a "Hipster-Dufus". The Wal-Mart exec's are huge Seinfeld fans, and in their board meeting, some one joked that anyone who used the site would have to be a "hipster-dufus".
exactly. Adware/spyware was invented by the lonely nerd down the hall in the dorm that needed an "in" to talk to the girls on the other side of the hallway. But you could also argue that it was invented by a gossipy sorority girl who wanted to track what her "friends" were doing so she could talk about them behind their back to all her other "friends".
same quote: Microsoft plans a new release this year and is trying to get Office into more consumers' hands at a cheaper price while persuading businesses to buy higher-priced versions.
probably should read "MS plans on not having any change in marketshare because 90% of the world obtains and uses their product for free against their will. The other 10% that pay for Office will be suckered out of more money because they are already morons."
Not only will there be hacks to allow computers to circumvent this "addition to our freedom", but there will also be hacks to modify the firmware of the chip implanted in your brain to simultaneously record said music and play back through direct neuron stimulation. Isn't technology amazing?
better yet, make WoW your business model and farm the gold like 13 year old chinese boys. Then you could have effective business meetings online and play WoW, while team-building. It's a win-win.
what's funny is people with my same connection (8mbps/768kbps comcast) see transfer rates of 15mbps in different parts of the country while I see the exact same download speed as i did on 4mbps. I always test at a download speed of 2-3mbps while my upload speed is pretty true to the advertised speed, doesn't matter if i am hardwired or wireless. And in practice, i see the same download speeds as my parents on 1.5mbps verizon dsl.
I had always been told that cable internet was "shared" with your neighborhood while dsl was a private line. After reading some of the posts here, it seems like both are shared, but maybe I'm getting the wrong impression.
I wanted to get Speakeasy dsl when i moved in to current abode, but I didn't realize it was going to take up to 2 weeks to get service once I placed the order...one week for the phone line to become active and then another week for the dsl to become active. The lady I talked to explained it pretty well to me, but I still find that absolutely obsurd. Which is why i got cable internet instead. I was already calling comcast to get digital cable/hd service and I was going to have service in a few days, instead of a few weeks. It's too bad tho, because I think I'd still rather have DSL service than cable. Not to mention the fact that comcast and verizon, and I'm sure others, block inbound ports to keep users from running servers. I pay for my internet access so I want to be able to use it as I see fit. I don't really see why they should care if i want to tie up my personal bandwidth with a personal website.
Just look at all the free mods for popular games and you will see plenty of people are prepared to give free content, including modeling, skinning and animation.
exactly. I think it's safe to say that Counter-Strike is one of the most, if not the most, popular mods ever made. It used to be 100% free, tho I'm not sure if it was open source. At any rate, CS never had a problem with people creating new player models, new textures, and new maps...all for free. I think it's just a matter of creating a game (or application) that grabs a large audience and then random people will want to start helping out.
I've read several articles on this OLPC. I haven't seen "Number Munchers", "Math Blaster", or "Oregon Trail" mentioned once, and I wonder, "why?"
wait a second....there's people outside the USA? /joke

personally, i like Slackware's "business" model/release schedule better.
ChanServ - Newb has joined ##slackware.
Newb: When is Slackware (choose ver. #) going to be released?
SlackPro: When Pat wants to.

I don't know what you are talking about. I grew up on Mortal Kombat and look how great I turned out. *kicks chair across room*

ok, maybe your explanation is better.

Good thing everyone has their MATLAB scripts saved from sophmore year Fluid Mechanics/Dynamics for times like this, right?
