The news of AT&T buying Bellsouth this week has prompted a lot of new speculation on how the phone companies plan on competing. Most of it has to do with media. With high speed DSL lines, phone companies could offer many of the same services cable providers offer today. Especially view on demand type services.
So, it's possible that we will see great diversification on the telco side with other companies like Skype coming in to fill in the gaps.
Most small businesses though would probably choose to bundle their internet access, landline and mobile phone charges therefore the telcos still win. It would be hard to convince me as a business owner to continue to pay my telco or cable provider for an internet connection in addition to the cost of one of these setups. Just choose a telco bundled service offering and save.
After all, this is what happens when Haliburton is allowed to develop video games under the guise of game companies such as "Rockstar". So for every violent game sold, you increase NRA membership when they buy their *real* guns, you increase military enlistment so they can shoot their *real* guns and you have soldiers with no conscious about pulling the trigger. All part of the Bush/Cheney master plan I tell you!
Remember back in the 80's and early 90's how Tipper Gore (yes, Al Gore's wife) was all for the censorship of rock music lyrics? She was one of the founding member's of the PMRC.
I'm very surprised she is not involved in this but we haven't heard much from her since Al lost the election bid in 2000.
That's fine. Show me Slashdot wrote the article and I'll agree with you that the focus from Walstreet is on Google because it's slashdot. However, I stand by the fact that the focus is on google for reasons other than anything related to slashdot.
Actually Microsoft contracts out most of the brochure type web development to companies around Seattle. Some companies have specific contracts for parts of the Microsoft web site. So no, it was not a Microsoft employee who screwed up.
I think Google is being singled out at this time not because of it being a slashdot article (after all, slashdot did not write the article but posted a link to it) due to the stock price. For a stock price so incredibly high, if I were a shareholder I would definitely want updates.
Non-quarterly updates and only posting yearly results would in my opinion stabilize the stock. You wouldn't have major fluctuations 4 times per year and should the company get into trouble they still have the capital to attempt to get out of a bad situation
If say the 2nd quarter report is incredibly bad and the stock price drops to almost nothing with shareholders selling it off there is potentially more damage being done from the stock sales than the actual financial problem in itself that was reported.
"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)," the notes in the original Google presentation state.
Accessible from anywhere....any device, any platform....and by anyone. Just what I always wanted!
Just wait until Oracle takes over MySQL - the options will be only to go from MySQL to Oracle because "something" will change to make migration easier.
I don't trust Oracle, I've seen them move into too many companies and push others out as well as backstab their own partners.
This my friends is the source of global warming.
A machine that puts out so much heat that you can feel like stripping down as soon as its powered up can melt the polar ice caps. These should be banned in Antarctica and Canada.
Don't forget, programming is one of those "Use it or lose it" skills. If you're answering phones and not writing code your skillset will be diminished.
I guess this explains how some of the companies can make such a great deal of profit and still continue to put out low quality, buggy games.
Look at Sony Online Entertainment for example. I'm sure every one of their developers are paid pretty good - especially after reading this article. However, the quality of code coming out of companies like this is atrocious. A lot has to do with the aggressive timelines I'm sure and the long hours - but in the end some of the things decided upon are just stupid! I'd also like to know what game managers make in comparison to managers in other genres.
Does this take into account the bonuses many game companies give for on-time release dates? Subscriber based pesudo profit sharing?
Considering the findings recently that soft drinks in the UK contain cancer causing Benzene - I haven't heard of the drinks being pulled off of the shelves yet.
What if cell phones are lnked to cancer? Are they going to expose the cells to triple the duration? Too much of anything can be dangerous. The electromagnetic fields that we live in daily are possibly harmful - will they stop microwave communications?
...the scary part is, if they do cause ill effects...we're giving mobile communications devices to children younger and younger.
Sun's Simon Phipps said he believed ODF would allow future generations to view all of today's digital docs and prevent a digital Dark Age from occurring.
Will he have scribes translating all of the word documents in the world into ODF by candlelight?
...or you can look iat it another way. Big business can stop using open source code. All large corporations running Linux suddenly stop.
Development would slow for Linux and any other open source project is it was not allowed to be used in big business.
I see it more as a combination of the two. Large corporations deal with folks like IBM and Oracle. When their consultants go in, if they are able to push OSS then OSS will be touted as more and more of a success story while IBM and Oracle sit back and reap the benefits of having support contracts, development contracts and implementation contracts.
I agree with everything except for the atheist comments used in the example. I actually have done what you described and honestly I didn't find it silly. I found the message to be uplifting and pointing people in the right direction whether it be spiritual or ethical. Now, should the person I was listening to be Pat Robertson then it does become a different matter - but again, you cannot judge an entire group based on the fringe. In closing, the exercise you described did not sway me toward atheism, it reinforced my faith.
Very true but I think I hate Comcast more.
I use a local DSL provider now but a few years ago I used Comcast. I got upset with their cable service so I switched to satellite but wanted to keep my cable modem active - and I let the know that the cable modem service would continue.
They didn't just shut off service to both - they came out and physically removed the line from the box to my house! Thanks Comcast for pushing me away - I didn't need ya any way.
Do give your child their own computer. Place the computer in a "public" room in the house like the living room, dining room, open office. Set up your router to not allow access to the internet after 10:00 pm (or earlier). Parents have to get involved in their child's computer usage.
I agree and I would also like to add that the majority of the people buying a Dell are buying it for a couple of specific uses...
Writing email - ok, Linux can do that.
Surfing the web - yep, Linux can do that too
Running Turbo Tax - There is some open source tax software out there but the people buying a Dell aren't going to go out and search for it much less understand how to install it. Also, personally I would not trust any of them with my finances.
Microsoft Word - Most people don't know there are other word processesors in existence!
The majority of people who buy a Dell are not the technical savvy. Sure, there are some - probably a lot who are, but Dell's cheaper PCs are targeted at the people who know nothing about computers - that's why Dell has so many advertisements stating you don't have to know anything about computers, they will walk you through the decision making process.
Don't forget what they've done to Star Wars Galaxies as well. Very bad year for Sony overall.

Quite possibly the mock-up was right? Who knows. It's a screw up, not a bad one but it's only made worse by the MS hatred perpetuated here at /.

Windows 2003 Professional doesn't exist.
1) Windows XP Home
2) Windows XP Professional
3) Windows Server 2003

I know, all of my data stored on my Commodore 128 can't be ported to my Linux machine since it doesn't have drivers for the 1571.

I'm not sure that is exactly relevant. If an officer aboard a US Aircraft Carrier began receiving encrypted transmissions...I'd worry!
Could you please elaborate? Why is a new monitor needed and what monitors on the market now will be defunct, which will work?
