Sounds like a major problem in Linux itself - too many variations between the distros. If configuring httpd is so radically different that a user cannot be walked through the use of the mouse and a gui something is clearly wrong.
What will happen if Linux does beat out Microsoft and there are even more distros on the market than now and a user calls in for tech support by X PC manufacturer? Grandma who wants to just look at the pictures of her grandchildren is going to be receiving command line answers because the support person doesn't have a walkthrough for the 5 bazilliion distros that helps her out?
Why can't Linux come up with a standardized GUI? Or at least standards FOR a GUI? It would go a long way in helping the newbies and also make it look less intimidating for people who are just starting to look at it.
That's quite a big hit for Symantic. Anything think they might start selling off software titles? Norton is one of their big money makers so I doubt that will happen but I would definitely NOT want to be a Symantic employee right now.
I already hate their phone service enough! I don't want them encroaching on my television. At least maybe we'll get the cable and satelitte companies to start offering local and long distance packages in all markets.
No, not at all.
I am pointing out the biased anti-American sentiment any time the Kyoto Protocol is brought up. Mention of global warming is almost always followed up with pointing fingers at the USA for it's decision not to ratify the protocol. However, there are other countries such as Australia that did not ratify it. Australia did not ratify it for the exact same reasons as the USA. Reported by the BBC in this article, John Howard states "For us to ratify the protocol would cost us jobs and damage our industry".
Australia also was a country that did not sign the Kyoto Protocol. I find it strange we don't hear how they are an evil nation contributing to the demise of our planet's climate..
Keep in mind that the hole in the o-zone layer down in the southern hemisphere has a greater effect on Australia than anywhere on Earth (except for Antarctica). So if the treaty was really worth something, it seems they would be a country more than willing to sign, uphold and promote it.
Good thing I have a 8 year old laser printer from HP that I am still on the original toner cartridge for. One of the best purchases I've ever made - getting away from those crappy ink catridges.
Great, exploit other people's family members, just not his.
Personally, if I was working in something that I was ashamed to tell my family members about I think I'd rather be digging ditches.
Mustard gas is something they would love to do if they had a chance, but we have seen what they actually are capable of - video taping the beheading of civilian contractors.
Where are the people crying about rights violations there?
So does anyone think that there might be a correlation between the education and intelligence of the gamer with how a specific game might affect them?
Also, some personalities are more apt to react impulsively to a situation versus thinking it through.
As you can see by my name I fly RC aircraft as a hobby. One of the tools I use to practice aerobatics with is a RC flight simulator. It mimics the physics and weather of a model airplane in flight and uses the same controller as I use to fly my "real" model airplanes. It doesn't remove the anxiety of trying a new manuever on the real model, but after I've done something on the simulator a few hundred times flying the real manuever feels just like I've done it a hundred times.
Could it possibly be the same with violence and first person shooter games? Do people who commit these crimes feel as though they have done it before due to the game and its just a walk in the park? Does it remove the emotional factor of taking someone's life? How are first person shooters and other games different from military training simulators? Would someone that has flown tons of flight simulators on the computer as games have any qualms about flipping a switch and dropping ordinance on a village?
A lot of the time we think that "no, its not possible" because its not possible for "us". Gaming is fun for us, we have no problem differentiating it from reality but most of the people who post here on/. are educated, intelligent individuals. Take a kid who has grown up in a bad family situation, non-educated, let him shoot people for 18 hours a day while his brain is still developing and I would almost wager to guess that he would have very little problem carrying out the acts in the game in real life should a similar situation develop - almost like instinct.
Actually, congressional appropriations and expenditures show a different story than what you propose.
For instance in 2004 (figures are in millions):
Econ. Growth, Agriculture & Trade: $4,421
Global Health: $2,534
Democracy, Conflict, & Humanitarian: $1,198

You seem to forget that the goverment in the US is the people. Contrary to anti-american or anti-republican belief, our officials are elected and while they may not represent every single person down to the exact issue - they try their best. Our goverment does not spend the USA's money, it spends the people's money....money paid into via taxes. If you don't like how it's being spent, you have opportunities to vote for President every 4 years with congressional votes in between.
Hi, how are you? I'm the mentally retarded child that donated money to help Tsunami victims in Asia.

Should we talk about how America responds to the aids crisis? famine? The tons of workers that volunteer time to help those in need around the world?
Based on your statement, the US responds to ANY stimuli with some type of war machine. I think the points I've made disprove your assumption and show you have a biased opinion of the USA. I'm sorry to hear that.
"DRM is another cause for global warming. It must be stopped! In fact, laptops are helping cause global warming and the batteries pollute the environment. Apple betrayed our country!! They played on hour fears!!!!"
I can see it now.
A Penguin that resembles Tux pops up in the lower right corner of the screen. A thought bubble appears above his head as he smiles and waves. The bubble reads, "So, it looks like you're trying to write a letter".
Do you have cable tv or a satellite dish? How much per month do you pay for that?
I think if its done tastefully it won't be bad. A tall building with a billboard of a real product may add realism to the game.
Anyone ever played Star Wars Galaxies?
The whole thing is an advertisement for the Star Wars movies, toys, posters, etc.
The same can be said for the upcoming DC Comics superhero MMORPG, the upcoming Star Trek MMORPG and a few others.
These are the same as playing a game where your character is a coca cola bottle and you're trying to save the vending machine that is under attack by "generic" can mobs.
It really depends on the type of plane flying.
Small planes do benefit from light wind, areas enclosed by trees, etc however heavier planes in the 20-40 pound arena would more than likely be just fine - especially turbines. It will depend on the wingloading of the planes most of all.
This would be awesome to fly at. Considering so many clubs are being closed due to urban encroachment and noise they should allow R/C airplanes on this runway a couple of days a week. I know - but just dreaming....
Not at all, I don't purchase MMOPRGs to play alone. If I wanted to do that, I'd play the single player games. In single player games I don't have to worry about people who train others (in a bad way), the whiners, the power gamers, the beggars and over all nasty side of the MMORPGs.
However, I like MMORPG games because of the "MMO" - I like the social aspect. I like grouping. I like the cooperation and just the general idea that there are other people doing something.
If you want to solo in an MMORPG, find another genre IMHO.
So the "Person" class is the main adventurer. While he is running through the tunnel to the mainframe lands, he hear's a request from someone calling themselves "User" that states he must first solve a puzzle for reformatting these characters to the one expected by the mainframe giants. 10/14/1999
Later, our hero Person signs up for a banking account and pays his credit card bills using the AutoBillPay spell. Person is then kiilled by the surcharge monster.

and you may get a little vertigo while surrounded by your WoW world.
WoW is addictive enough, something like this will send people over the deep end.
