  1. Re:matter of time on Cell Phone Jamming on the Rise · · Score: 0

Well, I do not think Jamming is the solution to the problem. Here is my solution: If I ran any kind of business, there would be signs on the front doors. Big ones. They would say: Cell phone use is not allowed in this building. Please turn off your phone completely before entering. If you use a cell phone inside this building, it will be confiscated and not returned. By entering this building, you agree to this policy. If you disagree, Please do NOT enter!

Employees would remind cell phne users of the policy, and ask them to shut off their phone. Anyone who refused would be escorted outside by a security person. Anyone refusing to leave (for any reason) when asked would of course be subject to having the police called to remove them. Someone reveiving an emergency call would be asked to step into a small room set aside for that purpose.

And yes I feel that using a cell phone in a store, restaurant, or especially a movie theater or concert hall is extremely rude and obnoxious.

I might save in (MS office07) DOC format in addition to ODF if I might have to send that document to someone who needs that format. I have a web page editor (August) for HTML. I tried saving as an HTML document from OpenOffice.org Writer, but it doesn't do very clean HTML. I would rather copy the text from OOo, and past it into August. August is an older Linux HTML editor, which doesn't do WYSIWYG. WYSIWYG web page editors add far too much unnecessary crap to your web pages .

Lifting the license plate allowed attachment of the pusher propeller. While the Aero flew sucessfully, it never actually entered prodiction. I think I hear that one of the originals was still flying as recently as 2006.

I am sure a modern version of such a vehicle could be produced that would be easier to get ready for flight, and be more fuel efficient. Not sure how much demand there would be, as a pilots license would be required, and you would still have to drive to the airport. However, it would solve transportation problems of getting to and from the airport on both ends of the flight.

ALL patents and copyrights expire after 5 to 7 years and are NOT renewable by amyone. After 5 to 7 years EVERYTHING is in the public domain. And software/business process pattents are eliminated completely. AND, if a corporation buys a patent, or a copyrighted work, that does NOT extend the patent/copyright period...it still goes public domain 5 to 7 years after the ORIGINAL release/publishing/grant date, NO MATTER WHAT. Patented inventions must be in production within 2 years of the grant date, and within 1 year of a purchase date.

When a patent expires, full details must be published/released by the patent holder, and must be easily available to the general public at no cost. Published books and other written work will be made available to the general public in ODF format at no charge when copyrights expire.

Music will be made available to the general public as lirics on ODF format, and as high quality MP3 and OGG music files that are freely available at no charge.

This would help prevent large corporations from buying and suppressing inventions that could be beneficial to society as a whole, but might reduce their profits. (can you say Big Oil?)

  20. Re:Don't viruses attack system files though? on Antivirus Vendors Headed for Court · · Score: 1

Hi. There is a distinction that is being missed here. These infected file are not and should not be identified as viruses. They SHOULD however be identified as infected files. If the anti-virus software cannot remove the virus from the file, and/or the file has been corrupted, the software needs to inform the user that the file may need to be replaced, or the operating systen re-installed.

One of the biggest bugs in Winjdows has always been that it has allowed installers etc... to install files to the system folders, and even overwrite files in the system folders. This was a HUGE mistake, that should have been correected long ago! When a program is installed files should only be allowed to be written to folders created for that program. Anytime that any program tries to write files to the system folders, they should be re-directed to the program's own folder, and a coresponding entry in the registry should redirect any attempts of the program to access these files to the file's true location. Also, a warning message should be displayed to the user that the program has attempted to install files into the system folder, and that this is not allowed.

Despite recent articals to the contrary, Vista is NOT secure at all for the average user, because the security "features"are so annoying that the average user turns them off after a very short time. To bad the DRM crap imbedded in Vista cannot be disable so easily!

As to the common practice of an anti-virus program identifying the files of a competing product (that are not viruses nor infected with a virus) as viruses or infected is just plain wrong. This practice is in the Micro$haft
    tradition of anti-competitive, monopolistic behavior.

  21. Re:What is wrong with calling if it is justified? on Sprint Drops Customers Over Excessive Inquiries · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have to agree. If problems are not resolved in a timely fashion, it is justified to keep calling until they are resolved. I do not know about other states, but here in Iowa we have an entity called the Iowa Utilities Board.
One of their functions is to decide whether phone and/or utility rate increases are going to happen. Iowans can write or email the Utilities Board, and complain about problems with phone and/or utility services, and recomend against rate increases until problems are resolved. The Utilities Board is required to consider all such input in its decisions, and when people write or email the Utilities Board, the offending phone or utility company gets a copy of the complaint. This usually has the effect of the problem being resolved quickly.

I had a phone problem resolved some years ago this way. We kept getting switched onto a very niosy phone line. A phone company repair employee told us (off the record and on the condition we would never reveal his name) that the phone company did not have enough good lines in our area, and would not spend the money to fix the bad ones. So whenever someone complained about a noisy line, they were switched to one of the good lines, and someone else was switched on to a noisy line. I wrote to the Utilities Board, explaining the situation and recommending against any rate increases until such practices were ended and the lines repaired.
Within 48 hours the problem was solved and we were in contact with the phone company. Not via one of the regular customer service operators but someone higher up who gave us her 800 number to call if we had any more problems.

So I would recommend that anyone with problems that are not resolved quickly to contact any state regulatory agencies that may exist. It can't hurt!
