Hi. You don't say what OS you are trying to install under, but in Linux you must un-install any previous version completely. I know that some programs in Windows leave bits of themselves in weird places, and these are not always uninstalled correctly. If you are trying to install in windows, try ununstalling any previous versions. If that don't help, you may have to make sure all OOo folders are deleted, amd you may even have to delete any registry entries related to OOo.

Its kinda hard to home build a laptop. What Dell needs to do is make it easy to buy a "naked" computer whos hardware is Linux compatible. Shouldn't be too hard to do, as they sell a few computers with Linux pre-installed. Just d give the buyerr the choice of the OS they want, or no OS on those machines. And of course state that they provide no tech support for OS problems on the "naked" machines.

Would I buy from Dell? No way! They are only 1/4 step up from e-machines in the quality of components used to build their computers. For a desktop system, I will indeed build my own as I have done for the last 8 years or so. For laptops I would probably go with IBM/Leverno.

I am NOT a "Linux fanboy", but I have been using Linux for the last 2 years now. I find the term Linux fanboy to be insulting and offensive, just as I would imagine the term Windows fanboy (or Microsoft fanboy) is insulting and offensive to those who use Windows. I chose to use Linux for very good reasons which I will not go into here. They have been listed here in many posts before. I do use Windows 98SE on two ancient laptops that I have here, because they don't have enough memory (32 meg, and 48 meg) to run a graphical interface in Linux. I do not disparage those willing to try a Linux live CD, and decide for themselves what OS to use. I do not have much respect for anyone who is close-minded enough to automatically say that any OS is better without at least considering alternatives. What is the best OS for me is not necessarily the best OS for everyone. The important thing is that more and more computer buyers are realizing the importance of choice, so companies like Dell need to make more choices available.

Hi. You will find that nVidia drivers for Linux provide more functionality than ATI drivers. I have a friend who has an ATI all-in wonder card. The video card works ok in Linux, but forget the video capture or TV functions. ATI has chosen to limit the functionality of its Linux drivers. You could set up a dual boot system (as I and my friend have) He went back to Win89se (i use Win98SE also) as it is faster than XP, and he says the video capture and TV functions of the card work better than with XP. We both use Kanotix (Debian SID based) linux. Better hardware detection and support than Ubuntu. The author of Kanotix is an absolute master with his scripts which include scripts to install the video drivers for both ATI and nVidia.

As to Vista, who needs it!? With all of the promissed features that Micro$haft has removed, it is not really an upgrade. I don't believe that it will be more secure than XP, based on M$ track record of insecure OSs. IF I could get about four windows programs either working under Wine, or replaced with native Linux apps, I would only have Windows on my ancient Compaq laptop (a p166 with 48 meg of ram, used mostly for reading ebooks and playing a few old games) The problem is not that M$ wants to stop piracy (Nothing wrong with that, although M$'s BS licensing and high prices are driving the piracy). The problem is that Lots and Lots of users with legal copies of Xp are being told by WGA that they have pirated copies! I doubt that Vista will be any more accurate in telling legal copies from pirated copies. And I think its BullShit that if an XP user changes any hardware they have to re-activater XP, and M$ says that if you change the MB, you have a new machine and have to buy a new copy of XP! I feel that even if I build a new computer, I should be able to use the same copy of the OS I used on the old computer as long as I wiped it from the old computer!

This will not do any good. I liken this to the late 70s when my parents bought me a CB antenna.
This antenna was made of aluminum. It had warning stickers on the box (had to tear or cut to open the box), on the manual, and on 2 parts of the antenna itself. All of these were 4 inches wide by 3 inches tall, in red and yellow and black. They said" Please keep this antenna away from power lines. You could be injured or killed if this antenna touches a power line." There was also warning pictogram of a man being elecrtocuted by the antenna in his hands touching a power line.

Yet a few years later, someone decided that too many idiots were ignoring the warnings and being electrocuted, and that aluminum CB antennas were just too dangerous to be allowed to be sold here in the U.S.A.

Since then I have noticed far to many laws and rules put in place to protect idiots from themselves. If someone does not have the brains or the common sense to know that touching a power line with a metal object is not a good idea, then I say let them kill themselves off and remove their genes fron the gene pool! We have to stop protecting stupid people or those who cannot learn common sense from injury or death because of their own stupidity (or lack of common sense)!!!!!

I know that in most cases misuse or not using security measures for a WI-Fi device does not usually result in serious injury or death. All the more reason for those that use such devices without reading the manual and/or educating themselves about the many security risks to just take the consequences. WI-FI devices are inherently insecure, as they broadcast or at least receive RADIO signals. For example: It would be much easier for someone to tap into a neighbor's cable internet service if that neighbor has a wireless router, than if they used a wired router. Yes the wireless router makes it easier (than running Cat 5 network cables) to set up a shared internet connection to several computers in different rooms of a house. It can also alow neighbors and other to access not only your computers but your internet connection.

First, anything I can do with AOHELL, I can do through any other local ISP without their software. Second, There have always been less expensive options for internet access that are better than AOHELL. Third, I have seen (and had to help fix) the problems caused by AOHELL software on my friend's computers. Every time one of them fell for the AOHELL scam (XXXX free hours) there were problems right from the start. And of course when my friends wanted to discontinue using AOHELL after the free trial expired, it was always nearly impossible to do so. Also, uninstalling the AOHELL software was ALWAYS destructive...in several cases the only solution was to format the hard drive and start over. There was one good thing about this however...after the loss of all of their data( pictures, documents etc) my friends learned the importance of backing up their data on a regular basis!

No ISP should require the use of special software to dial up or connect to the internet (well, maybe a driver for USB cable and DSL modems) I use PeoplePC at this time. They have special software, but I don't install it. I merely create a dial up connection (in both Windows and Linux...though I very seldom use Windows anymore). The way to do this is to use your full email address as your username(as in xxxxx@peoplepc.com)

People need to learn not to let an AOHELL disk within 10 feet of their computers! Maybe we need the makers of antivirus and anti-apyware/adware software to recognize and remove the AOHELL virus!!!

Typically the rest of such CDs are tracks that were not worth recording, but were anyway, just to fullfill a contract. I know that there are Albums (yes I am old enough to remember GASP!!! 33 RPM Albums and Turntables) and even CDs that actually have more good tracks on them, but I have found them to be in the minority at the local music stores. There is one local store that will sell CDs on consignment for any artist who will pay a small fee to the store. I have gotten some good music there.

The main problem with buying CDs at local music stores is that many people now realize that this business model for music sales is outdated. As to downloading music from the internet, the RIAA is only interested in protecting its sky high profits.

My opinions is that I can buy CD-R media for 25 to 35 cents each. Why should I not be able to pay a reasonable price ($.25 to $.50 USD) per track for the tracks I like, and burn a compilation CD that has ONLY tracks that I kike on it? Because the RIAA wants me to pay each time I play a track. I know they haven't achieved that yet, but that is their ultimate goal...Look at Windows Vista, Just loaded with built in DRM crap!

Mcafee's virus scanner also disabled Norton Systemworks Integrater, even though I had specifically NOT installed Norton Anti-virus. I no longer use either Mcafee nor Norton software of any kind. Although I have used Window less and less since installin g Kanotix GNU/Linux about 10 months ago, I have used AVG free edition for over a year and a half on my Windows install. I have also installed AVG free edition on several customer's computers. None of the computers I have installed AVG free edition on has had any virus infections as long as the customers follow my instructions about updating often (I usually recomend at least updating once a week for home users).

As for the other free AV products, I have only tried Clamwin. I just didn't like it as well as AVG. I have not tried the others, but ease of use is important for home users (and a lot of business users who don't have an IT person to look after things for them). Basically if it isn't easy to use and easy to update, many people will just not do it. I am curently looking at free AV products and adware/spyware blocker/removers for Linux. Such things are not as much of a problem for Linux users (yet) as for Windows users , but as Linux becomes more popular (therefore used on more PCs) these things will become more of a problem for Linux users.
