Hey, the stupid lobby isn't just giving to one side or the other. I'm just trying to point out that they are garnering more and more political clout every year and I for one am getting tired of it.
The Republican ticket is now complete, with John McCain picking Sarah Palin, the Republican Governor of Alaska as his running mate. And sure, she is hot (safe for work) but it would appear she is also a proponent of teaching creationism alongside Evolution in public schools. I don't mean to start a flame war here (ok maybe just a little) but seriously, how can anyone take a candidate seriously when they shamelessly pander to the stupid lobby?
The spec for W3C can say whatever it wants. If the standards body makes a mistake, like blessing useless DRM where it doesn't belong, the rest of the web will kindly ignore the stupid standard. Seriously, IE isn't standards compliant, what would keep Mozilla, Safari, any of the other browsers from simply ignoring this?
If Telus sold underpriced plans, underestimated use, and lost money, how long are they obligated to maintain the service?
what if they were making money, but discovered that the margins were higher for per/GB service? Are they allowed to just cancel contracts with users in order to extract a higher profit margin from their product?
Just an FYI, mac users are pretty similar to PC users. Most of us just don't care.
I have to agree - the OS most users use is determined by the hardware they purchase. Unless they have a nerdy friend or an IT department to harass, most end users are going to leave things stock. Which makes me wonder - why a marketing effort is required for an OS that comes with most new hardware from most hardware vendors? Unless the effort will sell more new boxes, I don't see it selling more Vista licenses.
So, If I own the pipe, I can put whatever I want on it? If Level 3 decides to charge an exorbitant for access to the backbone - and in doing so eliminates most of the internet that would be OK? Or if Cisco decides to push an update to their routers which fundamentally alters the nature of routing - that would be OK?
If the Internet has seriously become a critical piece of government and commercial infrastructure, why doesn't it perform like one? Because it isn't one.
I cannot dignify this with a response as it doesn't even come close to making sense. Look, regulation isn't all roses and rainbows. And it certainly isn't the answer to every problem. It sucks, but it is required. When a company with a government backed monopoly (like a cable giant such as comcast) does something naughty, they need to be reprimanded to protect both the consumer, and the company.
If that commercial network was connected to a critical piece of government/commercial infrastructure which a swath of the economy depends upon, yes, I do think the FCC can dictate to some degree what you can and cannot do with your network.
You make a valid point. Assuming Comcast does comply with disclosing the details, what is the FCC going to do to change their practices? When the regulatory agency is completely impotent, what would motivate a company to comply?
No one would write boks (sic), or movies or take pictures of any quality. Why put the time in when you can't make money off it
I dunno - it seems to me creative ventures like writing, or taking a picture have an inherent value of their own. On a note the GP raised, indeed there is no way to enforce copyright on the internet - for individuals who infringe. Corporations are still gonna have to pay for copyright. You own copyright on a picture? NYT or the AP is still gonna pay. As long as corporations and branding perpetuate on the internet your copyright will still have value. Just not for individuals who want to infringe.
Well, when the police have used up all their good will (which I believe they did actually have at some point, but I can't prove that) by being pricks this is their last resort.
I've often wondered if there is a way to make disturbing draconian legislation like this and turn it around. I think that there is - radical transparency in government. Allow every government agency access to the public's SMS and email data, but in conjunction publish the SMS's and emails of every government employee, so the public has access to them. If there is no right to privacy, and they are doing nothing wrong, they should have nothing to fear right? On another note completely - what is the over under on how long till this is abused (and they get busted)? I have 3 weeks.
You pay for health insurance right? Whats the difference between that and a tax? Oh yea. (warning PDF) It universally costs less to socialize it (to any degree more than what the US is right now).
What if your ISP just starts to monitor all your traffic by IP? Do you have any reasonable expectation of privacy on the internet? 1)ISP gives you a static IP 2)Monitor all traffic to/from said IP address 3)Sell for profit That would be OK with you? What if they also decided to block any and all encrypted traffic?
Wait, for the poor dudes who can't sleep around right?
It's kind of hard to disprove Intelligent Design if you're not even allowed to talk about it.
No. Its hard to disprove Intelligent because it doesn't make any verifiable scientific predictions.

I prefer to let the numbers speak for themselves - It would seem private insurance is just more expensive

80 year old English grandmothers are not terrorists
Thats just what they want you to think. then bam. tea and crumpets everywhere. oh the humanity!
The government is NOT watching everyone
Of course not, they just run all of the data through a bayseian filter (think spam filter) to determine whether or not you are a trrrst.

Well if it is your mother, she is quite mannish.
Here is a pretty good analysis from game theory on what we could actually do to reduce doping. Bottom line - increased penalties.
