I want windows 7 to be pretty good, just to give the Linux devs a run for their money. I want competition. I want linux to be the best it can, I don't care about linux "winning".
Keep in mind that the linux community doesn't really benefit if the general user is using any linux-based OS. Winning "the war" isn't really the strategy from the FOSS camp.
While that may be the best thing for consumers, Microsoft exists to make money. By charging for anything people will pay for, they can make more money.
Maybe you haven't used the latest version of Ubuntu, but Intrepid has got a very nice set up for configuring monitors. There's a rotation drop-down menu that lets you chose any orientation, and each monitor is labeled and freely positionable. It also gives you the option to mirror the screens if you want.
I am not a gamer and don't even bother to download these things since I don't have the time to play them, so take my gaming specific claims with a grain of salt.
But you have time to post a lengthy comment on Slashdot. Riiiight.
Well, I just did a test, and ACPI reports a 15.2 watt draw when running two "yes" processes on my dual core. My (relatively crude) AC power meter measures around 19 watts on my power adapter when my laptop's battery is removed.
Idle can go as low as 9 watts, depending on how much I want to shut off. 12 watts if I leave peripherals on.
I am running an Intel Core Duo at 1.6 GHz, with a 945gm integrated vid card. Bluetooth is on. USB is not suspended.
Sure, but they would have to be collecting revenue from the users somehow. I would just prefer they collected it from the stupid ones that don't know about adblock so Slashdot remains free for me.
Oh, I don't want you to see the ads. I want to keep technologies such as AdBlock to myself and the geeky crowd. If too many people start using it, sites like Slashdot won't be getting any revenue.

I guess it's just luck, then. nm-applet has been fine for me and all my friends. I don't even know what pptp is.

I'm from management. Get off of Slashdot and get back to work.
The only thing that dies when I'm running firefox is flash, and even then, it doesn't bring down the browser.
I think Firefox certainly has a fighting chance.

I don't get the reference :(
care to enlighten me?
Well of course you weren't surprised now because you already knew, but I bet you were surprised when you saw it for the first time.

You're in luck! Firefox 3.1 will have native ogg theora rendering
That's a step in the right direction.
Just for comparison, my whole laptop, with brightness on full and high CPU usage, doesn't even consume 15 watts.
URW? MS? A lot do...
At first I laughed... But then I realized that, no, Vista won't be able to run on this.
Vista doesn't support the PowerPC architecture.
Er, you quoted the [1] that clearly points to the citation.

Please stop telling everyone about it! I want slashdot to remain free.
