I've never been, I've seen pictures and it's beautiful and I hope to visit someday. It does happen to be Canada's most dangerous city though, thanks to the East-End, but compared to D.C. it'd probably be a walk in the park.
This is slightly off-topic, but a lot of people have mentioned that, due to Canada's better music-copying and marijuana laws, they would love to move there.
There's a better reason: culture. The city of Toronto is the city that never sleeps. The many colorful neighborhoods are teeming with people well into the wee hours of the night.
Kids don't go out and vandalise because there's plenty of stuff for them to do. Unlike in the U.S. where niteclubs are all 18 or 21+, they've got plenty of all-ages clubs and events. Here in the U.S., an all-ages event is asking for trouble.
The drinking age is also lower, 19, and 18 in Quebec. And people are generally more laid back about drinking, too. I spend a lot of time in Ontario and I've never been I.D.'ed for alcohol. I'm 19 years old. Here in the U.S. I can't even taste a sip of wine at a local winery.
But the number one thing is the culture. People in Toronto embrace diversity. It's the most diverse city in the world. Over 50% of the population was born outside of Canada. You can get food and products from just about any country. And in the meantime you will be safe. The chances of getting shot in Toronto are very slim. The murder rate in a city of 2.5 million people was smaller than in my town of Herndon, VA.
Now the bad part is getting a job that pays well. Salaries in Canada are lower. The other negative aspect is the extremely cold weather in winter. I've said before that if you picked up the city of Toronto and dropped it in place of Miami (and lowered the humidity a little), it would be the greatest place on earth.
I'm a half-Iranian American and I have a lot of Iranian friends, some of whom came from Iran just a few years ago. I've yet to meet a single person who supports the regime in Iran. People want their freedom. The women pull their scarves high and show a lot of hair, they wear makeup and jewelry. Protests are a constant occurence. People won't put up with the Islamic republic for much longer.
I wonder how effective the actual blocking within Iran is. I know that many Iranians can be found on Yahoo Chat. Iranians also download mp3's and porno. I doubt the filesharing services and chat would ever be effectively blocked by the Iranian government. Nevertheless, the anonymizer should help Iranians read western media and get a more accurate report of the world's news.
Imagine if most of the rich and educated Iranians had't fled to places like Los Angeles, Toronto, Dubai, Washington, D.C., Paris and London. The Islamic government would have been dead by now.
I live in Fairfax County too. The water tastes better than what I've tasted in many places, such as Los Angeles (horrible), Miami and indeed much of Florida. But the tap water in most of Ontario, Canada is excellent compared to Fairfax County's water.
BTW, my water comes from the Occoquan Reservoir. The water coming from the Potomac is actually better tasting.
I think California is the only state where it varies from county to county. In some places, though, there are additional local sales taxes which are considered seperate taxes. For example, Virginia has a 4.5 percent state sales tax. The town of Leesburg adds an additional 2 percent (I believe) on top of this.
Guess what.. This is the case in Canada. It's perfectly legal to copy music for your own personal use. You can't make copies and pass them along to friends, but you could theoretically borrow an entire CD collection and make copies for yourself and still be within your rights.
A couple years ago, I tried registering a domain in my local town.centreville.va.us and a week later I got a bill in the mail for $125 from some network services company in Hagerstown, MD. I called them and asked them what this was for and they said it was the yearly registration fee (!). The hell with those jerks.
I live about 3 miles from the National Reconnaisance Office in Chantilly, Virginia. They have strangely-shaped blue-colored buildings with very reflective windows. The entire compound is surrounded with tall fences. There's a footpath around the compound, and guards walk around this footpath at all times (weekends too).. They also have two vehicle entrances.. one for guests and one for employees. It's a very secretive place.
Maybe in Bumfuck County, U.S.A. they would need to kiss corporate ass to get new businesses located there, but Montgomery County, MD (a suburb of Washington, D.C.) has a high concentration of high tech, government and corporate HQs and is growing exponentially. They can very well do as they please, especially when it benefits workers rights.
IIRC, ALL smoking in restaurants is to be banned in Montgomery pretty soon.
Does Katz really think the U.S. is one of the most sexually repressed nations? Has he ever heard of Arabia or Iran?? I would know because I am Iranian..

The X5 is actually built in... Tennessee.. or perhaps it was Kentucky.
Regardless, the X5 sold in the U.S. is NOT built in Germany, it's built in the U.S.A.

The other great thing about Ontario water is... its usually nice and cold, right from the tap. :-)

Canada has the same system (tax is added on the bill when you make a purchase, but most provinces have sales taxes of about 15%.
Wow. Mp3, JPG, and GIF are "Microsoft Windows filetypes".
You learn something new everyday. Thanks, Lindows.Com.
Wow. Pizda..
Imagine the porn appeal.

Usually the loser has to pay the court costs and for the court reporters and whatnot.
Slashdot != Linux.
Most Linux gurus probably don't even read Slashdot.
Why would you run mIRC on Linux?
Use Windows if you want mIRC.
Linux has its own quality IRC clients like BitchX.
Herndon is a nice town but Reston is just lame. Too many "dot-commers" hanging around. I prefer a more established community.
Earthlink is nothing more than a front for scientology.

I know what IT is.
It's the final release of a working Debian GNU/HURD distro.
I bet you're all surprised!

Ha! I'm running RH 6.1 :-)
Were you on 270, or on 355?
I can't imagine riding a bicycle on 270! that's insane.
Are you talking about the one in McLean, Virginia?
I've seen it, and yeah their logo is very similar!
Ha!
They shipped it to him, didn't they?
If anyone ships something to me, it automatically becomes mine!
