  3. The heart of the beast on Sony Open to Considering PS3 Price Cuts · · Score: 1

The huge issues that Sony is having with the PS3 is the following:

    1) Cost - Despite all the shineys and bells & whistles, the majority of game players cannot afford a $599 or $699 system. People here and elsewhere can say "The XBox 360..." but keep in mind the most expensive Xbox 360 is $499. I would buy a PS3, but at $599 that is my whole check there and I like the idea of eating and living in a house. Cost is a major factor when you have a budget and most of the US readers would agree.

    2) Games - Right now there is no worth while game to play on the PS3 or in the near future. Most of the titles that are "hot" on the PS3 can be found on Xbox 360. Also, it seems that the PS3's main focus less on games and more on the Blu Ray tech and the technology itself. Sony Computer Entertainment has forgotten major aspects of game design and is creating games that are just simply not fun. Most of the game industry is also unhappy with the design tools used to create these games. They complain that the tools are too complicated to use and/or have more bugs than a roach motel. I guess Sony forgot the old saying "He who ignores history is damned to repeat it". Remember Sega's Saturn and the Neo Geo Sony? Guess not....

    3) Sony's General Health - When people talk about the PS3, they keep mentioning Sony like it is a single unit. People remember - Sony Computer Entertainment is responsible for the Playstation and that it is a child of the Sony Corporation. Sony Corp right now is not fairing well. The corporation has pinned a lot of hope in the launch and the success of the Blu Ray and the PS3 in order to counteract the slumping sales of TV, Radio, and Computers. However, to slap such unneeded stuff like MP3 player capacities and things that the XBox 360 does not do in order to boost the Corporation is a foolish move. This move just shows that Sony Corp has no idea what the game community wants and wants to save Sony by adding on things that a gamer may not use. Sony Computer Entertainment has little say in this matter since they are dealing with the parent company. To make an analogy - It is like the blind leading the blind. In the end the gamer is not cared for just so Sony can believe they are winning a war they are in fact losing.

In the end, if Sony in general continues this path this PS3 will be remembered as the Neo Geo 2007. Sony needs to stop worrying about the technology, Blu Ray and what not and get back to what got the PS and PS2 where they are - the GAME PLAYER.

  4. Point of discussion missed on Gamers Divorced From Reality? · · Score: 1

O'Reilly must have missed what he was saying. Reality is a point of view we accept. Granted there are some realities that are universal and accepted as fact, O'Reilly I guess wants us to share his reality. That reality being the days of Little House on the Prairie. If your reality is to be a normal Joe/Joel from 9 -5 then be a Elf Paladin from 5 till midnight then that is your choice, not O'Reilly's.

What I am trying to say is that O'Reilly must have missed the bus that would have brought him into the 21st century. We live in a high tech world and we want entertainment and social structure. The internet has helped people that were once socially inept gain confidence through anonymity. I am one. I think O'Reilly needs to understand that you shouldn't shoot your mouth off about something you have no understanding of.

  8. Don't believe what you read.... on PS3 Predicted to Lead Market Through 2011 · · Score: 1

First I would like to say that I am neutral when it comes to what system will dominate this new "next gen" war. While I believe it is possible for the PS3 to do well, this study is perhaps negligent to the current state of the PS3 and the actions Sony is doing.

First and foremost the PS3 and the Wii have to compete against the already established base that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has. Since the 360 has a year behind them, it will be difficult for either to convince players to get their system. However, Microsoft has pretty much conceded that the Nintendo Wii may be the winner based on their comments.

Secondly, the study does not take into account the state of the PS3. In my opinion, the PS3 maybe a still birth based on all that has been published about it. The cost of the system, the Cell Processor not matching up to it's alleged power, the inability to play used games, and the attempt to push the Blu Ray technology all do not paint a very optimistic picture for the PS3. That is not to say however that the Wii is perfect. Nintendo is notorious for making promises but failing to deliver too. Still, Sony has a lot of problems for the PS3 and no attempt has been made to fix them it seems.

Sony also has a major attitude problem as well. Their own ego has blocked their ability to remember that the PS3 has the same hallmarks as another system. Remember the Neo Geo, Sony? The Neo Geo was a powerhouse and it was the same song and dance the PS3 is trying to do. I guess Sony forgot the ending of this story. Nobody was willing to spend $700 for a system then fork over $200 for a game. Kas's claim is that you are getting a lot for what you pay for. Considering that the Wii lets you play old school games for download, an online service with Wi Fi connections for FREE, and has many great starting titles being only a fraction of what the PS3 will cost, I think you are getting more there instead. This is of course if Nintendo comes through this time...

I know I said in a previous posting that Sony has forgotten what has got them this far. That is the GAME PLAYER. This attempt to push technology but deliver subpar games with a hefty price tag will do the system in quickly. Just because they did well with the PSX and got lucky with the PS2 WILL NOT guarantee them success with the PS3. If all they got for the PS3 so far is "Ridge Racer" then they may as well abort this and try again from square one. To me, Sony is burning gamers and developers with poor design tools and expects everybody to take it. Come 2011, I strongly believe that the PS3 will be called "Neo Geo 2006". I think this site says it all: http://luthorownsplanes.ytmnd.com/

  11. Sony is ignoring gamers on Sony 'Anti-Used Game' Patent Explored · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems to me that Sony is forgetting what gamers want and is trying to push what they think gamers want. I strongly feel that Sony will lose the next gen battle because of all these mistakes they are making before the system comes out. These mistakes break even the simplest rules of game development.

As a student in game design I can tell you some of these mistakes are costly. For example, denying a gamer the right to test before buying is a major mistake. From what I know as both a gamer and as a future game designer, I can tell you that is the fundamental right and selling strategy. Most game players do rent before buying and if they are denied that right, then the system will be marked for death. Microsoft and Nintendo have been big on this idea, so Sony should be smart enough to understand this too. Also with the system costing so much, to be unable to rent games on this system will be a fatal mistake.

Sony needs to wake up and realize they have some problems on their hands before it costs them the race. Past success means nothing if this machine comes out as is. The way it stands, Nintendo is getting the golden goose to lay its golden eggs on its lap thanks to Microsoft's acknowledgements and Sony's bumbling nature.

This only goes to prove one thing - as long as AOL "thinks" it's number one, it can treat the less than computer literate like children. AOL has no visible competitors and most people (the ones that are computer illiterate, not us fellow geeks) assume that AOL is the only show in town. This is thanks in part of their advertising and visibility. AOL knows this and assumes that by doing things like Mr. Ferrari went through will power house them back. AOL, Comcast and any other Mr. Big out there is in for a rude awakening when people smart up and realize that they are not the only show in town.
