  3. Neilson Ratings on Microsoft Watching What You Watch · · Score: 2

Things like this could make the Neilson ratings a thing of the past!

Shows could be canceled or renewed based on who actually watched them. Instead of a sampling which may or may not reflect the actualy popularity of a show (I know it has a good confidence interval and all, but it's still just a sampling), this kind of thing would tell the networks what people really watch!

Knowing something like this was the case, I'd be more likely to watch reruns! I often skip reruns to catch up on other things, but if I knew I could help make sure my favorite show stayed on the air by watching reruns, I'd be much more likely to watch them.

Frankly, as long as they are tracking what I personally am watching, i.e. I'm just a statistic, I don't have any problem with it.

  4. Cheating? on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 2

Does anyone know if the Civ3 AI cheats at higher levels? In Civ2 I seem to remember the manual telling you how the other civs cheated at the higher levels. (Needed fewer shields to produce things, less science needed for new advances, etc.)

I'm not done with the manual yet, but the section on the play levels doesn't mention anything about it this time.

Has anyone heard if it just has a better AI this time at higher levels, or if it still cheats? If it does still cheat, I'm disapointed they weren't up front about it again.

I agree also. It does seem harder. Personally, I love it. If I'd been able to just play it the way I played Civ2 and win, I'd have been disapointed.

  6. Culture on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 3, Insightful

The inclusion of culture will take some getting used to, as well as the rest of the changes.

I personally love the culture aspect so far. What a rush it was the first time a city asked to join up with me because they were so impressed by my culture. (This was on the easiest level, I'm still in my "learning mode" right now.)

I'm looking forward to woking my way up to the higher levels.

  7. Finally, someone does it right! on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 2

Let me chime in with my love of this game also.

I'm thrilled that someone has finally made a sequel to a game that has the right balance of the old and the new.

I've played too many sequels where I can't even tell it's the same kind of game. And I've played too many where I think I'm still playing the original and I wonder why I paid for it again.

Civ3 has a good balance. I've not come across a change yet that I don't think improves the game. I admit it's still early, and I've only played at the easier levels so far to give myself a chance to adjust.

I think that overall this is a wonderful example of developing a game to make it better and not to just use the name to sell games (Civilization: Call to Power) or to rebrand the original in a new box.

I have a license to drive a car. I cannot possibly transfer my license to another driver.

You have a license to drive any car. (Actually, there are some restrictions, but it's basically the case.) That's very different from having a license to drive a 2001 Saturn SL2 with the serial number 0391948409402028. With a drivers license you can drive pretty much any car you come across. The assumption being that you will either own the car or have permission from the owner to drive it.

A software license is really closer to leasing a car. If you sold a car that you had leased, you'd be in big trouble as well. I'm not saying it's right for software to be that way, only that it is.

Are you saying that there is a basic preplanned story line that they are going to follow? I'm hoping that's what you are saying. I've not heard anything like that about it, but I've not looked much either.

B5 taught me to love the "story arc". Before that I'd just watched sci-fi shows as a series of things that happened. How I watch sci-fi hoping that each episode will be part of a larger whole. Nothing as detailed as B5 has come along that I know of, but it has had an influence. Farscape, for example, has a nice continuing story that, while not planned out to the extent that B5 was, does seem to have a general direction each season.

Oddly enough, Buffy and Angel both have this same kind of "seasonal arc" which I've come to enjoy so much.

My only problem with this is that Microsoft lacks the motivation to fix the hole if no one else knows what it is.

Sure, people can point out there "some hole" exists. But unless the details are made public, Microsoft (or whoever)isn't motivated to fix it, and no one can check up after them to see if it has been fixed. We have to take their word for it. That would make me very nervous.

I wouldn't be against a "grace period" where the vendor is told of the hole so that a patch can be ready when it is announced, but it would need a time limit on it to keep it from being delayed forever.

The sad part is that it works. The volume of spam (and telemarketing) shows it works. People wouldn't dump so much money into it if they weren't making a profit.

I know, I'm pushing the bounds a bit there with my counters, but my point is that stopping something that is illegal is fine, but when it steps on the rights of people who aren't doing anything illegal, it becomes a problem.

In my opinion, that is what this does. (Except that I don't think it actually will stop anyone, from what the article described.)
