Why are the record companies chasing after people who will never be able to pay the fines? Why aren't they going after the REAL pirates, the people that burn copies of CD's and sell them for profit on the street cornet. I thought that was the definition of piracy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringemen t_of_software
Creating a copy and giving it to someone else. This constitutes copyright infringement in most jurisdictions. It is not infringing under specific circumstances such as fair use and fair dealing. In some countries, such as Israel, creating a copy is completely legal, as long as it was done from non-profit intentions.
Creating a copy to serve as a backup. This is seen as a fundamental right of the software-buyer in some countries, e.g., Germany, Spain, Brazil and Philippines. It can be infringement, depending on the laws and the case law interpretations of those laws, currently undergoing changes in many countries. In the US, legal action was taken against companies which made backup copies while repairing computers (see MAI Systems Corp. v. Peak Computer, Inc. (1993)) and as a result, US law was changed to make it clear that this is not copyright infringement.
And collusion sounds like what the oil companies do to maintain the high price of oil, working together for mutual benefit. Who needs monopolies when you have collusion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collusion :wq
States overturning federal mandate? OMG! When do we get to have a coup d'état?! I've had enough of these socialists trying to tell me what to do.
And aren't they already using the RFIDs in passports? Didn't that turn out to be a really bad idea because any loser with a scanner could get the information?...
Some years ago a malicious person posted a hate letter in Art Bell's name directed at the Filipino people. Art Bell is the host of a very popular late night radio talk show. CoastToCoastAMThe latest article.
Needless to say the FBI got involved and traced the letter to an anonymous terminal at a US university. Art who now lives in Manilla, Phillipines with his Filipino wife is in a dangerous position because the newspapers keep printing it even after it's been proven to be a hoax. All he can do is decry the libel and get the paper to print retractions.
If they're so worried about having the encryption on the DVD broken, why don't they use stronger encryption? Every time they release a new encryption protocol it gets cracked fairly quickly. If I can encrypt my filesystems such that is would take 100 years of computing to crack, why can't the MPAA encrypt DVD filesystems such that they take more that a week to crack?

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are DOA for the same reason the Dreamcast failed. Not enough titles for the hardware and the cost is too high for sane people to make the transition.
...You just don't know it yet. Microsoft is a sinking ship and it's flailing cash in the hope of staying above the water. Every gambit that fails is a nail in the coffin.
I tried to install ZoneAlarm on RC1 and I got a message saying it was incompatible. Then I tried installing McAfee, same message. I forced it anyway, rebooted, "Windows has blocked some startup programs. Click here to see." WTF! Click, crash, bang, halt, BSOD. No joke. The BSOD didn't even stay long enough to be read before the machine rebooted itself. Now it doesn't work at all, BSOD after thirty seconds of uptime. All because I installed a third-party security app.
All you can do is hope against hope that 51% of the Senate or the House are sane humans who have some vague understanding of what the hell's going on and kill stupid shit like this.
Haha! The Thompson book I have includes Fedora Core 4. The CD envelope actually has a sticker that says "These CD's don't work." Then gives directions on where to download the CD's. Silly Thompson.
It's nice that there is fierce competition between chip makers. If only this worked with software makers. The only thing keeping M$ alive is the fact the computer makers like HP and Dell don't offer a real choice of operating systems. "Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro or just go home"
One day, the American economy will simply collapse unter the weight of big corporations and copyright law. That's when we'll have the second civil war. Only it won't be North vs. South, it will be Consumers vs. Corporations (with lots of money to buy foreign armies). And when there aren't any consumers left, the corporations will die giving rise to the Industrial Revolution.
It made national news.

Why not OpenSource it? Are there fiendish backdoors?
Does this mean there may be a Unix/Linux uTorrent client in the future?
Maybe my company can upgrade from the antiquated RH7 based Caldera OpenLinux. Funny thing is, we're using SCO software on IBM computers.
Just use Gmail and invite yourself to Gmail whenever you need a new email address.

How do you control internet libel?

Bundling the browser with the OS is one thing, but by locking out third-party apps altogether they're asking for it.
A woman may be dead and all you can worry about is whether the project will continue?!
I thought I smelled something cooking.
Title should read "Good guy lobs grenade over fence into RIAA territory"
It's a win/win situation. Folding@Home crunches more data and the electric company makes more money.
