I doubt most have hot aisle containment. Typically just spacing it out right, properly sizing the air conditioner, and installing rack blanking panels is sufficient. Hot spots (usually caused by packing in blades) can be cooled with rack level gear.

  4. Way too darn cold on Making Data Centers More People-Friendly · · Score: 1

In my experience people keep the datacenter way too cold. If the equipment runs fine at 70F, then set the CRAC to that temperature. If the hot aisle is working right, everything will be cooled within specifications.

  5. Changing approach on Should Employees Buy Their Own Computers? · · Score: 1

This is just evidence of the changing approach to IT. If you assume nothing on the network is secure and present all of the sensitive stuff using server-side resources (think Citrix XenApp, VMware View, etc) then it doesn't matter as much. Set a policy that requires installation of such-and-such antivirus, OS, etc and let it go. Stop caring if the computer hits less savory websites and just monitor usage of the business owned pipes. It won't work for every scenario but it can in many.

  6. Re:You still need a device on user's desk on Thin Client, Or Fat Client? That Is the Question · · Score: 1

I think there is a lot more to this than controlling environments and centralizing administration. Think about a factory floor or a branch office where there is not a solid IT presence 24/7. If a desktop stops functioning, all the user needs is to grab a spare client out of the closet and plug it in and they are looking at the same session they had before. IT can replenish the inventory later during a planned visit and cause minimal downtime to the user.

  13. Re:We use Nod32 on Central Anti-Virus For Small Business? · · Score: 1

I have to disagree with this approach. Running Windows computers in a business without any antivirus, simply because they aren't 100% perfect is not wise. By having the antivirus on the workstations you can protect that computer from picking up all of the viruses that the antivirus definitions are aware of, and possibly more. Statistically you are better protected since you don't have to worry about a majority of the viruses out there. You significantly decrease risk to your business by using an antivirus.

I'm of the belief that our views are still too simplistic to grasp the real answer to those questions.

I think we can grasp it just fine, but we need to prove it with evidence. So far that is missing. Time is a unit of measure (in our case relative to Earth rotation), not a substance to manipulate. This is of course science, but it is not yet scientific law. The big bang is still hypothetical. The topic is interesting, but what is next? It seems to me that the reason this topic is news at all is because it can be turned controversial and linked to the argument for/against divine creation, but maybe that is just me.

Articles like that are for upper management types who do not want to read technical details. It does seem that more and more roles are merging together, facilities management included. Look at asset management. The tools we use are starting to provide centralized asset management for not just IT, but finance and facilities too. Granted they don't require the monitoring and config management capabilities of an IT geared product, but then they don't have to have rights into those modules either. With building systems tying into the network it's a fact of life that IT will become more involved.
