OP: After this, every apple zealot loses his license to use "it just works".
You: No Mac/Apple user ever says that. The only idiots that ever say that are the trolls.
Me: Links to Apple marketing campaign with the slogan "It just works".
You: God damn, you can't read worth shit. They have never said every single product they ever make just works. Pull your head out of your ass for one second so you can get some oxygen. Then maybe you can think clearly. Show me anywhere that says Apple saying "All our products work perfectly 100% of the time"
The crap linked article doesn't even get the version number right - I recommend reading ars techinca's take (the amusingly named Hope you didn't plan to actually make calls on iPhone 2.0.2) or even Apple insider.
So how long until we see the first security hole that lets the payload replace the dialler and home screen (and maybe the contacts app)
You realize that there's been several security holes in the iPhone that give the attacker root access? I'm not sure why you believe Apple's closedness with regards to the appstore has improved security.
Anyone can grow a garden at home. Yet still may people seek to attend the carefully cultivated gardens of botanical centers around the globe, and gladly pay to do so...
You totally missed the point. I wasn't saying that Android's an appstore killer because of homebrew development.
The difference is that the ecosystem of paid, professional developers for Android will be able to do things like:
* Add copy/paste functionality (if missing) * Develop an unrestricted skype / SIP phone application. * Develop apps that run in the background. * Allow applications to be installed without the vendor's approval. * etc, etc etc.
Choice is often overrated. A team of professional interface designers should make the choice for me instead of giving me tons of options to figure out.
I couldn't agree with you more!
The choice between MS, Apple & Linux is superfluous. Let's go with the most popular choice - that way developers can concentrate on one platform.
The choice between Firefox & Safari on OSX is superfluous. Apple's team of professional interface designers should make the choice for us; all those OS X users using Firefox are just delusional.
It'll be interesting to watch the clean, sleak and confined iPhone go against the more likely open and flexible Android.
Depends. It will be a short race if we're watching the clean, sleek and confined iPhone go against the clean, sleek, open and flexible Android....
Frankly tho', I'm surprised at the number of posters on this site who seem to believe we're going to be looking at a contest between Apple & Google for the smartphone king crown.
Is it American chauvinism that makes so many here discount RIM & Nokia?
Areca might work, I'll have to give it a spin. Thanks.
No problem. Note that my post is not an endorsement of Areca, I just searched freshmeat for ftp encryption and perused a few of the matches. Have a read through the other results, you might find something else worth looking at.
Not sure what sort of budget/skillset you're working with, but it'd also be pretty trivial to script up a solution that does what you're after too.
Am I the only one thinking this is like someone saying they want privacy then running around butt naked then wondering how they can keep their privacy at the same time.
And the answer of course is security through obscuring. Wear a mask;-)
(I guess you're not completely naked, but hey, close enough)
"secure" and "untrusted" don't go hand in hand. If you want security, don't put things in untrusted spaces. Period.
Are you sure about that? I consider my SSH connections secure even tho' they traverse untrusted links. Same goes for my encrypted mails, https connections to my bank, etc.
Anyway, to the submitter - is areca close to what you want?
I haven't been disappointed in the least with the signal strength on O2;
If you'd read the article, you'd know that the problem manifests at low signal strength. The fact that it works well for you in (I'm guessing) South East England is not surprising.
I'm not sure how eating cows increases the methane they produces, or how land has to be cleared for grazing, cows live on land that is already grass. No point are all terrible.
Seriously - do a quick google search and you'll find out that all of your questions are quickly & easily answered.
Suppose the way to test it would be to put the same sim in a different 3G phone when experiencing problems with the iPhone and see how it works?
In the comments section of an overseas article regarding this problem, one user writes:
I have an iPhone 3g with Optus. I have done comparisons using my new Optus sim card both in the iPhone and my previous Sony Ericsson 630i. At home with the iPhone I get 1 bar of 3g reception, and often no service. In the same spot, with the same sim card in the Sony Ericsson I get 4/5 bars of 3g reception. So obviously its not bad Optus reception alone.
This isn't an AT&T problem, it isn't an isolated problem, this is something being experienced by disappointed iphone users all over the world.
Oh well, its hard to feel much sympathy for early adopter suckers who fell for some bling & a slick marketing campaign.
What environmental issues are casued by eating cattle?
The environmental issues caused by the worldwide cattle industry are:
* Significant contributor to the greenhouse effect (methane). * Land clearing (not just for the Cattle themselves, but the crops used to feed them). * Soil & water degradation. * Soil compaction (particularly in countries with no native hoofed animals).
The sad bit is that it doesn't have to be as bad as all that; if we were willing to pay a bit more (and get tastier meat), the cattle industry could significantly reduce most of the above.

*shrug* - whatever dumbass.
Apple doesn't even say it.
Didn't say what? Apple certainly said "It just works"
I said Mac user you tool. Apple marketing is marketing.
So why didn't you say something like:
No Mac/Apple user ever says that. The only idiots that ever say that are the trolls and Apple themselves.
No Mac/Apple user ever says that. The only idiots that ever say that are the trolls.
What the fuck are you talking about? Have a look at the number one reason from Apple's get a mac advertising campaign from 2006.
Complete self delusion - the RDF is strong in this fanboi.
I installed it and it works fine. Don't know what all the fluster is about.
Absolutely - if it works for you, it must work for everybody!
Tough to fix hardware issue with firmware patch
Tweak the firmware so the hardware issues are less obvious. Drop to edge quicker.
But i thought the iPhone 3g was supposed to be 2nd gen.
The crap linked article doesn't even get the version number right - I recommend reading ars techinca's take (the amusingly named Hope you didn't plan to actually make calls on iPhone 2.0.2) or even Apple insider.
I for one welcome our new haha overlords.

Compare the iPhone's walled garden approach to this:
Areca might work, I'll have to give it a spin. Thanks.

I'd mod you up just for the signature alone.
That sig is no joke - it's a photo of a completely typical Apple fanboy ;-)

Odd, I noted that "I really hate Apple users" seems to work much better.
Try "I really like Apple products, but I really hate Apple fanboys"
Most Apple users (these days) are just like normal clueless inoffensive windows users. It's only the Apple fanboys that piss off normal slashdotters.
If you have no modus operandi, they can't really catch you. See Richard Kuklinski
Not really - in fact, from the article you link to [emph mine]:
Unhealthy obsession.
Well of course, I've got 'mac' in my nic/email.
You were referring to the way all Mac users have an unhealthy obsession with their PC don't you?
Mac user.

Here's some links to get you started.

For christsakes, don't be so goddamn clueless when you're trying to poke fun at others...
