    You can get a year old regular desktop for the same price and run an operating system of your choice,

    You can get a big, noisy, ugly, year old desktop, high power-consuming, requiring an O/S reinstall, along with hunting down all the applications (a no-no for the masses), with god-only-knows-what sort of hardware problems.

    Or you can get one of these things - and have all common workflows (skype, office, google, music) working out of the box.

    Hard drives have entered terabytes territory, and you think 256GB SSD drives are "large enough"?

    Yup, even 64GB is easily large enough for my primary hdd on my laptop - I'd pay a premium far larger than 30% if the price/performance relationship was linear.

    Until SSD drives cost only around 10-25% more than a regular drive of the same capacity, they're not replacing them at all. For most consumers, capacity is king, not speed.

    But, the bulk of my content resides on network servers (same holds true for my less geeky friends - but for them, substitute 'usb drive' for 'network servers').

    Monsanto does own their seeds because they invested a lot of time and money in the traits of those seeds.

    IP laws shouldn't be applied to plants. IP laws exist to prevent copying items & plant's only purpose in life is to make copies of itself.

    The iPhone is fine for typing text.

    Yes, for short messages, typing in URLs, etc, it is fine.

    What the submitter asked for is not fine general text entry, but the best choice, specifically for ssh. An iPhone (where every slash, period & ampersand is three taps away) is a poor choice for ssh text entry.

    Don't be so dismissive until you see what terminal possibilities might arrive with the SDK.

    Right, thanks - we're looking for a solution right now, not a possible solution that may come about one day.

    When I read the headline, I thought "I wonder how long it's going to take for some fanboy to recommend the iPhone, despite the fact that it doesn't have a keyboard & is inferior for text entry compared to say a blackberry, or even some of the HTC monstrosities."

    Why not just use QuickTime's control panel to tell it you don't want an icon in the notification area? Then it will never return.

    Why not just use Quicktime Alternative & never have to bother with Quicktime's arrogance / spamminess / attempts to install other software / irritating update / etc?

    I've read both FAs and I can't see why. Am I missing something obvious?

    Interestingly, a search for Exherbo on google only yields 116 results as I write this; the lowest I've ever seen for something I've searched for from a slashdot headline. I wonder how many search results google will be returning by morning?

    (funnily enough, a yahoo search for the same item returns fewer, but more relevant results - another first for me).

    Only had one problem on my Acer Laptop (TravelMate 8210) with SP3, it forgot that I had a wireless card, restarted and been fine since then (almost a week) so I'd say no problems for me

    Wow! Your anecdote (in which you don't even mention if you're using intel or AMD) has totally changed my mind about the reliability of SP3!
